Thanks Marcus,
its image plane 3.1 august 2007.....
rickg55,
Thanks, that's what's causing the problem - you have the PC version installed. Download the Mac version from the Downloads Center (see my signature). Make sure you delete the old version ZSC file before installing the new one.

thank you!
worked perfectly....now just two questions;
can I size the photo?
what file type is best to bring in?
soooo relieved!!

Good. :)
JPG or PSD files are the best. If you are loading the image behind a model in Edit mode then you need to set the ImgSize slider first to scale the image, though you can easily place the same image at the adjusted size - make sure it's selected in the Texture palette and clear the background (Ctrl+N) first.

Thanks Marcus,
In trying this out I see that sculpting over a photo isn't all that easy, as it is hard to see clearly once the opacity has been lowered on the tool....
With that in mind, would it be possible to do this like an engraver does by transposing the details from one location to another?
For example, if we could put a photo to the left and the tool to the right of the screen side by side, the brush could touch the picture and the details superimposed on the tool.....
I think this would be a great help to anyone who uses a photo in ZBrush
take care,
Rick

hi all,
i'm really in need of the zbrush 3.0 version of image plane... anyone have it on their drive or a link perhaps? zbrush 3.1 doesn't work too well on my computer so i have to stick to 3.0 and the lack of shift v, shift h in revC of image plane is killing me.

Yes, the changes that have been made in readiness for SpotLight in ZBrush 4 means this technique isn't available.

hi all
i was trying to learn about Image plane from Gnomonology tutorial http://gnomonology.com/tutorial/246
after couple try i noticed i don't have the ImagePlaneCube.ztl
ImagePlaneX.ztl and ImagePlaneX_face22.ztl and image references psd for both files i searched them and i only found the ImagePlaneX.ztl
i downloaded the imageplane plug in from download session and the imageplane 3.1 upgrade from zbrush central they only have the plug in file.
marcus_civis
10-15-09, 01:28 AM
Dukowsky,
This plugin is not used in that tutorial. The plugin can be used to sculpt with a reference image as a background - see the instructions.
The ImagePlaneCube.ztl should be in the ZTools folder, or the ZTools/ImagePlane subfolder for ZBrush 3.5.
Please don't use this plugin with ZBrush 3.5 until an update is available from the Downloads Center.
Thanks,
Dukowsky

leesalo,
That error will only appear if you have the wrong version of the plugin installed. It's possible you have an earlier version that is causing conflicts. Download the plugin again from the Download Center and delete the previous versions before installing. Be sure to install in the ZStartup\ZPlugs (NOT the ZData\ZPlugs).

i'm really glad this has been updated, but i'm still having troubles using reference.
in 3.5r3 the display error still occurs if you move geometry from a edge back and forth and leaves a grey spot, this is removed by simply rotating the tool, but that can mess up the alignment (which i know we can store but if doing this a few hundred times...)
also trying to use reference the old way still causes a crash:
2 layers
1 with background image
2nd with 2 subtools, turn on transparency, turn off ghost and crash.
I know spotlight will hopefully change all this but is there another way for the time being?

Spaceboy,
When using Image Plane to put a reference image on a single Layer, simply click off the canvas to get the display to update after moving points. That way you will avoid rotating the model.
For the other method, you will simply have to avoid turning off Ghost. Material transparency will work fine with that method.
Image Plane will be replaced by Light Box in ZBrush 4.

thank you marcus, i didn't know about the clicking the canvas.
in the second method using only a single subtool on a second layer(not the image layer) material opacity just turns the model darker but not transparent, what am i doing wrong? because i'd prefer to be able to work with multiple layers with multiple images

Hi all
Please can anyone post the plugin for the Zbrush 3.0 version?
I really need that version because I work with that version in my school. And I can't change it... Well they don't want to change it u_u.
Please anyone
;)
Thanks
Little confused as to the new functionality of this. Is there a work around using it now? It's in, but without the 'drop to canvas' functionality I'm a bit stumped as to how one uses it now?

Image Plane can be used for a variety of things besides texturing, for example modeling with a reference image, but in 3.5 you can use it with Projection Master if you follow the steps here:
http://www.pixologic.com/docs/index.php/Image_Plane
Image Plane will no longer me needed when LightBox and SpotLight are fully implemented in ZBrush 4.
Aye - I'd seen that - but it looked like it lacked a normal scale option unless I was missing something?
Roll on 4 I guess - I'm sitting at a games studio watching a bunch of character artists tear their hair out and roll back to 3.1 :) (who are also having loads of problems with the zapplink weirdly - they're either getting errors trying to launch it or pure white non materialed layers)

I don't understand what you're referring to. Could you explain?
I have found that my Zapplink stops working as soon as i
Store Startup Document. Even if i don't change anything about the
Startup Document but choose to Store it as a Startup Document.
Delete the Custom Startup Document and Zapplink works perfectly again.
Hi Marcus,
I'm pretty sure that the problem is me rather than image plane. I'm using osx version 3.2 of ZBrush and i cant get the PSD file, even the original with the text on it to display on screen(front/side). can you please just let me know if this actually work on this version of zbrush.
What i'm doing is load the tool and draw that on screen and then load the texture and nothing happens. Watching gnomon video but his version is 3.1 so no real help there.
many thanks

rachel,
Make sure the image plane tool is in Edit mode. Once you have loaded the texture into the texture palette do this:
1. Make sure the image plane is selected in the subtool list in the Tool palette.
2. Go to the Tool>Texture Map submenu and click on the thumbnail. Now select the texture from the pop-up.
The texture should now be applied correctly.

I am not sure what I did wrong...but I am using the zb3.5r3 with the new plug for it. Did everything that was said to do for it except I couldn't get the material not to be flat mat while using the image plane. I would size my canvas to the pic for the image plane and have tried the fast shader, skin shader, basic mats and all would change back to flat when I selected the image plane in PM. I tried to make a new one while in PM and it went flat too.
That wasn't the biggest problem though.....The textures picked up just fine and was able to save out the textures but I took off the textures I wasn't going to use those till I fixed them in Photoshop....when I opened my model again in zb it was flat as a paper doll there is no definition of the model at all in any subtool and not only that but all models in that file seemed the same when opened. When I say Paper doll it is still 3d I can turn it but it is very washed out and cartoonish looking. It seems as if there is no shadows on it no definition.
Some files that were corrupted with this paper doll effect I had textures on it some did not even have that and shouldn't of corrupted the files. If I put back on the texture it had on it, it pops out again but only with that texture I have tried others I have made from poly painting and uvs and the such and those don't work to pop it back out....tried to colorize it with new color and mats to no avail it won't become 3d looking again. This has never happened before in the other versions even when the mat was set purposely to flat. I am able to use files outside of this file and thank goodness I didn't change anything big so I didn't have too much to do again.
Please can someone tell me what I can do or not do in order for this not to happen again.
Thanks all and thanks for this wonderful plug, even with what ever is happening, this plug changed the way to get great realistic textures in ZB and I am grateful for it. :D

Never mind. After two weeks of texturing one square at a time....Was also very sick for this last week and wasn't able to get on to say I finally figured it out.
It was simple and right in front of my face.
When I had gotten out of PM ZADD was still at 0 (in which without the texture on or just newly drawing your model on the canvas will give your model no depth), RGB was only on instead of MRGB (which can give you a flat color material look to your model when drawn on the canvas) and a circular alpha I believe Alpha01. Even though I had the move brush set before I went into PM when I got out it changed these setting for the move brush and I didn't notice it. I had saved each file after every PM texture I did (the side, front and 3/4ths view). When I had opened the file or took off the newly made texture it was or would go flat...more flat than just the flat color mat look. If I had one of the models opened with this problem any other I opened would do the same. The standard brush was the default brush ZB starts up with but when I opened any one of these files the standard brush was set up with ZADD turned off and RGB on 100 and Alpha01 or a round alpha is set on. I didn't save any brushes nor was I asked if I wanted to save the alpha. It seemed to have transfered the settings to the standard.
Any way I noticed some others plagued by this PM paperdoll effect...and since I haven't been around and don't know if anyone else figured it out....
2 FIX IT
Once out of PM
Take your model out of Edit mode. Turn on or turn up ZADD to 100, take off the alpha, and turn on MRGB. Clear the layer make sure the drag rectangle is selected in stroke and redraw your model on the canvas (now its should have definition) and go back into edit mode and save you model.
Hope this helps someone.

Hi kailashsinghbisht,
Image Plane won't work in 3.5 as in earlier versions. When using with Projection Master you can follow the suggestions here:
http://www.pixologic.com/docs/index.php/Image_Plane
I think someone mentioned this before, but it would be a great addition if there was a was to store multiple postions. Maybe just like 2-3. I would find that extremely useful, for my current production and most productions I have been in. Sometimes the perspective drawings you can get a pretty tricky to line up to and when flipping betwen multiple images it can get quite tedious and time consuming.
Great plugin though, thanks!!

Why are you using 3.12? You can download the update to 3.2 here:

You can then use the Mac OSX version of Image Plane available at the plugins section of the Download Center.

Can not get Image Plane to work at all in 3.5R3. Running Windows 7 64 bit. Every single time I click on Load Image I just get the light blue windows donut. Not even an error message, the program just stops responding.
That was with the default installation so I tried re-downloading the plug in again (over and over) and it still does the same thing. :/
EDIT:
Uninstall/Reinstall fixed everything. :)
I tried to ZProjects color onto my model, but I couldn't. The interesting thing is that I could ZProject onto PolyMesh Sphere...:(
Any idea? I need urgent help...thanks

Jester,
Just turn the subtools OFF (so they are not visible) by clicking the eye icons. It shouldn't be necessary to delete them!
Hey Marcus,
Actually I had to delete the subtools, because the other subtools were invisble but the ZProject didn't work. Now It's OK, but a bit inconvenient to clone the current then append again. I'll check on other computer maybe it's computer specific. I run Windows 7 x64
Hello marcus_civis, the image plane is zbrush 3.5 r3 is really confusing. Could you perhaps make a video tut about how to use it? Image plane wont work with projection master like it did in 3.1.

Because of the changes being made in preparation for ZBrush 4 and Spotlight the functionality is different. See here for a method you can use with Projection Master:

How do you rotate the Image Plane like in Mudbox?

I am using Zbrush 3.5 R3 and loaded the image plane plugin, when I go to projection master and attempt to load an image it says image plane doesn't work with projection master.
LuckyC - You don't need to use ZBrush 3.5R3. It's a free upgrade to version 4. Contact Pixologic with your registration details and you'll be sweet! ;)

Hello Guys, was looking for some advice.
I've installed the Image plane plug in and when I click on it, it asks me to select my texture. I then select my texture and click on 'Open'.
But at this point, I can only see my texture loaded in the texture palette, but in the tools palette, I see it creates a blank 'Plane3D' tool, but it has no textures on it (not even in the subtool menu) and my canvas is just blank.
The 'Move' Icon is highlighted at the top of the screen, but I cant see anything.
If I select the actual 'Plane3D' tool that has been created, it just draws it onto the canvas using a white flat colour.
Can anyone please help me and tell me what I am doing wrong??
Many thanks in advance,
Regs

Image Plane 4 is done and in beta testing.
The reference image in the bike movie is done using a polymesh plane as a subtool (all the flat parts of the bike are created by doing an extract after masking the plane.) This is the basic workflow:
1. Load the Plane.ZPR from Lightbox>Projects.
2. Turn off Tool>Geometry>Smt and subdivide a few times. This is so that the plane has enough density to work with Spotlight. You'll probably need at least a million points.
3. Load Spotlight and the image of your choice.
4. Turn on RGB and turn off ZAdd.
5. With a large draw size, transfer the Spotlight image to the plane.
You'll now be able to append your model to the plane and use it as reference.

Thank you Marcus, you guys are GREAT !!:D
Not working for me, period.
I follow all the instructions-exactly-from every tutorial, and still nothing. All I get is an extra Plane3D tool, and nothing in the background of my current tool. The image isn't even on the new Plane3D tool. It's literally nowhere.
Am I the only person that cant get an image plane in the background at all? I'm using Zbrush4, but i couldn't get it to work in Zbrush3 either. I've tried every format of image and still nothing.
I hope someone can help.

For ZBrush 4 you need Image Plane 4, available from the Download Center. Make sure you completely uninstall any previous version.
I've done that, I've even uninstalled and reinstalled Zbrush altogether. Still nothing.

Thanks for the help, I've managed to get it working. A third fresh install of Zbrush 4 fixed it. Thanks for the great plugin!
