How would you make a red meat mat cap? I have another anatomy study I want to present soon. I know your supposed to get the data from some photo, but can you tweak the settings, such as cavity intensity, specularity, reflection and more?

hey womball!
yeah! sure you can. that's what makes it so darn cool. you might have to give it a few go's, but i'd bet it's doable.
looking forward to see your project.

Tryin for the MeatCap now. damn its tough, cause the real material has so much texture variation. Ive made some progress though. Will let you know how it goes.

Thank you very much guys/girls
here's my small contribution,
3 matcaps that I use to polypaint (modified versions of Adam Lewis's matcaps)
The 3 models above have the same layer of polypaint on them, only the matcaps are different.

Meat reference (http://photo.starnet.ru/Thematic_Wallpapers/Zhizn/Mir_ludej/Eda_i_napitki4/images/MEAT.jpg)
It may be as complicated as skin to get. You have SSS scattering, the muscle striations are visible in the crosssections, so it looks marble like. And you got these random holes. Also this will probably overwhelm all details in a sculpt. So you would need either strong lighting with rimlights, or cavity maps.

Wow Great matcap textures everyone!
Just a question,
How come i use a skin matcap but i then cant paint on the model?
It just uses the matcap and not the RGB value?
Any help is appreciated.
HD CG ADDICT
10-15-08, 11:07 AM
it could be because you don't have colourize turned on in the texture panel
I have it on... i am just trying to do a nice skin texture by starting with
a nice matcap but i cant put any other tones to the model. hmm
When i hit colorize the model has a bunch of dots all over.
dotsqt5.jpg
How can i just clear all color and start over?
Hi Again guys, been a little busy with some other free content at CGChain to focus on matcaps so i will start gettin back into it with a relatively simple one for now.

What the crap was i thinking releasing that awful matcap yesterday.

Any luck with the meat shader?
hahaha i was being like Map to the stars Eddie :D
And as for the MeatCap, technically it should be called sonofa%*$*hardcap
Ive tried many different approaches and all failed. It might require too much texture to work but il have another crack at it.
Just had a look at our sites quota and **** you guys download alot.

I have tried to "reverse engineer" some of the materials from Z2 to get close to the originals but anything with "glow properties or similar seems to crash. I had very few crashes in Z2 doing the same type of thing. This is as close as I got before crash, to the old "Meat Glass" which was great. If I can work out why it is so unstable with these mats, I will post the resulting Matcap.....

***** EDIT: PC AND MAC VERSION (ZB 3.12) NOW AVAILABLE *****
Ma.jpg
I finally found some time to throw these mats I've been working on together and post them. I've worked over a period of several months on the realistic skin shader alone (starting back in ZBrush 2!) so I hope you all get good use out of them. :D
A. Realistic Skin (quad shader) - Below I'll post a few directions on how to use it. It's a bit tricky.
B. Another skin quad shader. A bit more subdued than the realistic one.
C. Basic Flesh Matcap material.
D. Verdi Gris Bronze
E. Antique Bronze
F. Bronze with highlights - there's a couple small light sources from the sides in the matcap texture to give a little more interest.
G. & H. Sculpting Material 1 & 2 - I made these to try to come up with some mats which are good while sculpting in realtime.
I. Rusted Iron - I tried to upgrade Jantim's mats to work well with ZBrush 3 and this is about as close as I got so far. I'm still working on it, but I think it's decent enough to upload.
Here's the links to the materials:
KRAKEN'S MATS SET1 - MAC (http://www.loadedbrush.com/ZBMaterials.zip)
KRAKEN'S MATS SET1 - PC (http://www.loadedbrush.com/KrakensZB3MaterialsPC.zip)
MATS.jpg
And now for the explanation of the Realistic Skin quadshader. In the first image below I added a swatch of color showing the skin color I used. Obviously that can vary, but I find that color works pretty well.
Also, the shader is very sensitive to the light settings so I put these images together with some notes which should help you to use them.

However,
when I try to render the skin quadshaders and the one from zb2 my zbrush crashes.
Has anyone else having this problem.

Disco Stu - i was getting the same crashes too, until i dropped my model to pixols and it seems to render fine. Hope that helps.
SolidSnakexxx
02-21-09, 07:22 PM
Wow, thank you so much...the materials work wonder on my machine except the rust material which seems to crash during the mid render.
KrakenCMT
02-21-09, 09:18 PM
Yeah, it's mainly the quad shaders that seem to be hit and miss sometimes. I sometimes have to render 3-4 times before it renders without crashing. All the ones that occasionally crash are the quad shaders which I converted from ZBrush 2. It's been an issue I've had ever since the ZB3 upgrade, but I'm not really sure why it does that.
Disco Stu, the realistic skin shader already does that. For my example renders with that mat, I used a brownish skin color on the model. But if your model is colored white, it will look blown out with a harsh reddish sss effect. But like I said, this mat is a bit tricky. It really needs some attention to get a good balance of lighting settings and sometimes a bit of tweaking of the mat itself to get it exactly the way you want. A high maintenance material so to speak. :)
Disco Stu
02-23-09, 09:26 AM
yeah i already noticed its white :D
ill try to render a few times and see if it will stop crashing.
i really love the two sculpting mats anyways  :tu:

They're available from the MatCap section of the Download Center. http://www.pixologic.com/zbrush/downloadcenter/library/ (http://www.pixologic.com/zbrush/downloadcenter/library/)
Does anyone know where I can find the matcap that looks like this?

I used to have it before a system crash and now I can't recall where I got it. It's one of my faves and I don't see it in the Library or the repository.
If you can help, thanks!

My matcaps are just sitting around on my computer not getting enough use these days.
So, I figured it's high time I donated a few to the ZBC community. Hopefully, someone will get some good use out of them. Enjoy!
(Hope these work with the latest PC version of ZBrush. They were created with earlier Mac versions.)

Select Flat Color material, switch to MRGB, go to Color palette, Fill Object. Then you should have a clear ztool.
spaceboy412
12-04-09, 01:23 PM
do as danconia says but do NOT use MRGB, use M only otherwise you will fill paint over your model when all you want to do is the material.

I'm really sorry, about that wolfie. I did create these in earlier Mac versions of ZBrush, and was worried that some of them might not work in 3.5r3.
I'm surprised toy soldier and green sheen aren't working, though. They were more recent matcaps created in 3.2 I believe. I had a similar experience with someone else's matcaps. Some worked, some didn't. Wish I knew why that happens.
no worries any mats that are for free are a bonus thank you:tu:

Okay, let's see if i can do this right...I apologize for my lack of posting, but thought (after tripping across this thread quite by accident recently) I'd add a few materials to the mix.
In the Pixologic download site, i started to see 'Avatar' and 'Dr. Mannhatten' materials, and it kinda inspired me to start making some of my own from some of my favorite horror movies like 'the Thing' and 'the Howling'.
And since I have now twice had to design Predator helmets, i thought it might be a good idea to make one of those as well..I simply took framegrabs from the movies and tried to match as best i could (with my limited knowledge). Anyway, they're fun, and i thought some of you might get some use out of them..
Fig1.jpg Fig2.jpg
Fig3.jpg Fig4.jpgHey, can you make an updated version for R3, or tell me how? I love these screenshots as they are the closest to real skin I've seen in a Mat, but even following your directions with the lighting I'm not getting this look at all.
oh yeah an update for these MATz would be great...
KrakenCMT
03-18-10, 07:05 AM
I'll see what I can do to update those mats in the near future.
And while I'm here talking about mats, I've also been spending a little time here and there on developing another full set of mats (some matcaps, some not) which look like other realistic metals, stones, clays and skins.
Here's a quick preview of three of them, but there are several others in the set and are not quite done yet. I'll upload them all when they are done, which will be soon. They will be a mix of matcaps, quad shaders and tri shaders.

Here's another collection of mats that I've put together. These are for the ZBrush 3.2 Mac Version, which is the version they were created with. I was already fairly far along with creating these new mats when Scrybe mentioned here that the older ones I created don't work with R3. These probably won't either. I've tested them on my R3 version on my MacPro (running Windows in Bootcamp) and they crash it whenever I try to load any of them.
I had already taken time to convert the previous collection to PC, but I guess they don't work again since R3 came out. In order to update both material collections to work with R3, I would have to recreate them all from scratch. It's a little time consuming to do that so it could be quite a while before I get to it. I apologize to PC users for that inconvenience.
Note: The only true Matcap is the Smooth Sculpting Clay one. All the others are hybrid Matcaps/Procedural shaders. Experiment on the Mossy Stone and Distressed Stone mats with applying different neutral colors to your model.
***EDIT: UPDATED TO INCLUDE CONVERTED PC MATERIALS!***
Here's the link to the materials. Enjoy!

Thank you, Erklaerbar, for this wonderful material: I'm already imaging its results on the right objects!...But it is too early for me: I'm still learning.
Please give me a piece of information: when I "Save As" an object as .ZTL, the applied MatCap disappears, and the object is re-loaded with its default RedWax material.
Is this correct, or am I missing something?
Thank you for your help,
Eduardo
Erklaerbar
12-06-10, 07:42 AM
you can press "M" on your brush palette and click "fill object" and then the object is filled with your matcap, however not the matcap itself but only the slot number. So you need to place the matcap first into your startup folder. hope that makes sense
PS: you can also save the project instead of the tool itself, this will maintain everything, including the material

FYI, I just realized this recently.... The hybrid mats I created do work in ZB4. You just have to hit Best render first, then immediately hit your BPR render button. You may want to scale down the Canvas Bump and Canvas Bump Scale settings. They were designed for the AA Half feature, so the textures should be adjusted when using the BPR.

really everyone, if they could start making PNG renders, along with their their ,ZMT material packs for Sculptris it would be cool.
(if people are going to flow back and forth between the two they need the mats)
