I don't know about that site you mentioned. But about bandwidth, if thats an issue for you, I wont do it.

The site has only be made today and has had over 600 visitors in one day, so perhaps that might be too much traffic.

NIce Jason!

Do you have any idea how to take a tool, and all its sub tools and make them into 1 mesh?

I want to use this subtool feature to draw cloths on my models, and be able to pose them in Z3 with the new transform tools...

TIA,

Thanks for the free videos

Havent got that far yet
I heard its a pain but havent played with it yet.

Jason,

Thanks for your tireless efforts in presenting your video tutorials to help us mere mortals requiring visual instruction. What strikes me about your vids over others is that they are so sharp and crisp and include voice-over. Do you have or could you offer a tutorial on how you make your tutorials? So many of the vids offered on the forum lack audio and visual crispness. So many of the vids are fuzzy, out of focus. How do you produce your tutorials?

Thanks!

~S.~

cannedmushrooms
05-21-07, 11:59 AM
actually if you look at the link on the left of the site labeled portfolio development I run down how to use camtasia with the screen resolution.

As far as audio goes I use a neuman BCM 705 microphone.
Its basically a radio mic. The real trick though is adjust your desktop resolution to 1024X960 then make the video so that the icons and tool buttons show up crisp
I also use a mackie board for the audio.
hope that helps.

lol they work but if you get a 503 error keep hitting the f5 button
my host only allows 150 people per second so somtimes you will get a error.

If you can always right click save target ass to your hard drive. Try not to stream the videos;)

Jason,

thanks for the Top vid. I understand all except the part where you turn the fig into a polymesh and then load a ZSphere for the head. What's the reasoning?

Say I am doing the same except for modeling say, a tree. What do I do with the Zspheres? must I match them up to the shape of the tree (branches, etc) in order to start the top draw?

Thanks!

cannedmushrooms
05-21-07, 08:07 PM
wow now thats a very good question. For what I have done with it I would say no. Because if that was the case the shoulders on rolypoly would have not worked. I think the Zsphere is only there in case you want to move or bind. It also activates the topology and rig features. I also noticed the size of the sphere does not matter cause I was trying to re-top some armor pieces I did earlyier and the Zsphere did not match the size of the helm at all but still worked;)

cannedmushrooms
05-21-07, 08:15 PM
Some new videos from my adventures in textures.
Very cool stuff I might add;)
Painting on pixols rather than uvs is about the sweetest thing I have seen. But then when I transfered it my jaw droped. I so cant wait till I can make a normal and disp map again.

Ow but for the bonus video I convert a z3 model to z2 to make those very maps. Life always has a loop hole.
Please note that super poly models take alot of ram. I converted a 4 million poly model but I'm sure about 6 million and my computer would have opened a rip in time;) So patience and ram are required for the 2nd video;) I have 4 gigs and it worked great.

05-21-07, 09:28 PM
would you be able to paint then tranfer uvs like you do to multiple uv maps? ie one map for the helmet, one for the horns etc?

cannedmushrooms
05-22-07, 05:44 AM
Easy
1. Colorize model
2. Export obj
3. do uvs but seperate your uv maps into the seperate UV cordinates
4. enable uvs
5. lower model to lowest level
6. import obj with uvs
7. tool / subgroups / auto uv groups
8. subtools / group split
9. switch to the subtool
10. texture new texture (pick resolution)
11. texture / color to texture button
12. export texture
Switch subtools repeat 9-12
hope that helps

If bandwidth is an issue for you, you might try using Coral cache links.

Basically, you can provide a link to:

http://www.houseoftutorials.com.nyud.net:8080/movies/whatever.mov

Instead of a direct link to a video on your server and the bandwidth will be coralized and distributed.

I used this a few times when I did some FXWars challenges and I was getting like 80 gigs a day usage from my host. It worked *wonderfully* and basically makes your capacity almost infinite (and your bills a LOT smaller). And it's free.

Here's the wiki on how it works:

http://wiki.coralcdn.org/wiki.php?n=Main.FAQ

Hope this helps :) I've been really trying to see how you manage to pull off multi-texturing in Z3... isn't working for me!

furrykef
05-22-07, 09:20 PM
How much does your site cost now, and how much do you use in storage space and bandwidth?

EDIT: Also, instead of exporting and re-loading the low-resolution mesh in the topology video, couldn't you just "make adaptive skin"? :)

spider2544
05-22-07, 10:09 PM
i keep getting 503 errors that your bandwith is getting exceded, you might want to toss these videos up on file front or youtube or something like that.

ArsRepublica
05-23-07, 05:15 AM
I appreciate the tutorials, Jason. I'm getting the bandwith problem as well, but I figure the demand for the videos is high, so I will try later.

spider2544, about uploading to Youtube, the quality of his videos is far above their capacities.

Disk Space:15763.00 MB of 200000.00 MB (7.88%)Bandwidth:859958.08 MB of 2000000.00 MB (43.00%)

It's not a bandwidth issue as much as I need a dedicated server.
Right now I pay 17 dollars a month for this account but a dedicated server will run you 110 a month with the same bandwidth and diskspace.

Without a dedicated server it only allows 150 people on the site at one time.

going to look into this Coral cache links thing thanks tharell;)

Your videos are great! I have learned a lot from them. Just need to get your most recent Zbrush3 videos. I have my own dedicated server for my websites(I got a few websites). I got it from Godaddy.com They got pretty good prices.

My dedicated server is about $489 usa a year 500 gig per month bandwidth and 20 gig storage.Plus you can have up to 30 domains and unlimited sub domains and unlimieted email addies.

hi everybody @first,
although i´ve learned sculpting a few years ago (a lot of^^) and trying around with zbrush1.5 some years ago i just decided to buy zb3 because of the tons of enhancements made since the older versions and the encouraging the whole community and zbrush3 to start again with 3d stuff.

after trying out and using the rapid start of zb3 i´searched a lot for tutorials
for absolute zb3-beginners. last night i saw your stuff, downloaded it and then i couldnt stop watching your vids til 50´clock in the morning.
these tutorials r really really nice jason. thx for it a lot!

time to get back to work, cya all (hope i can give something back to the community next time)

Hi.

I like your tutorials. They are very useful.

If you are having bandwidth issues you should check out the Veoh network for hosting. They host videos for free in a format that is very easy to download. It's some kind of distributed hosting thing.

Free and useful, especially if you're hurting for bandwidth.

ok as the server becomes a little more stable I now can release RenderpassHey, just wanted to say your videos are great. Lots of good stuff to gain out of them and very helpful. Your time and effort in putting them together are very much appreciated!

I just have one little comment.... If at all possible, it'd be excellent to edit out those slow moments in the few times where nothing is happening or, if that's not possible (or at least easy for you), then you could just talk or provide tips or stories while you're (and us) are waiting... cause sitting through 3 minutes of silence watching your image render was a kind of slow torture (and at first I though the video froze!). The next time you rendered, I realized I could just fast forward. ;)

The Flash 8 evaluation version has a video importer that uses a streaming template. If you used flash, a codec wouldn't be necessary.

File->New

File->SaveAs (MyZB3Tutorial.fla)

File->Import->Video

Select MOV, DIVX, or other video format.

Next, Next, Next.

Pick a template.

Next.

Control-F12 to publish.

Upload SWF, HTML, and FLV file.

FLV can be hosted on youtube or myspace for free.

CM - any pointers on settings for GetRight? I've been unable to get anything but useless little 415byte files for the last few days - it would actually help if the downloads would "fail", since GetRight would retry them, but it's not doing that.

****NEVER MIND - just discovered that downloading from your site, rather than the links here, works just fine with GetRight.*****

Thanks for providing the videos - I've been using ZB for years, but haven't touched v2 in a long time (since I switched to the Mac about a year ago), and I really need something to get me up-to-speed with ZB3's new features.

Topology is by far one of my most favorite subjects. Re-topologize like 3 heads and then pick up a pencil and try drawing a head. You will see by knowing the topology on a 3d model it branchs over to 2d drawing as well. For even those peeps that cant draw water from a well;)

Ok topology is revamped totally. This is a long one peeps just watch the first video it has an intro at the beginning explaining everything.

Video topics include the following
Sculpting a critter out of a ball
Subtools
Mesh combining
Mesh mirroring
Re-topology
Mesh projection
Lowering Resolution

Really helps gathering questions from that chat channel then making the video. Sort of like a field study of artists in the wild ;)

click the link to the houseoftutorials.net in my signature and its on the zbrush page
(again thanks goes out to peter for supplying such a great server to allow me to do all this) I will be relinking houseoftutorials.com but waiting for the traffic to drop a little.

WOW wait till you see what else I figured out.
Changing the topology without redoing the entire topology over again.

insane!!!!!
say just adding a new object to a pre exsisting object and using the old toplogy as a template. this way you dont have to make the whole topology rig

And presents to you
My workflow

Developing my workflow was Key before I start sculpting alot of creatures and things. Some people develop a workflow as they work. I think backwards so I try to establish workflow and tool knowledge first that way I can just sit back and be an artist and not a techy that knows how to sculpt;) Enough blaber on with the show.

Jason,

Thanks so much for your interest and energy in supplying us Noobs with such excellent tutorial info. I have a question, though: I have always been taught to avoid any but quad polys and to avoid anything greater than a five point spur. Yet, these demos all include tri-poly's and six point spurs. Should we strive to eliminate these on our own or are these strictures unecessary?

Thanks!

Once you start to see where a triangle will not hurt the over all sculpt then Its exceptable. Thats my opinion. I sculpt with triangles all the time. But the triangle will be in a location with a harsh change in direction. Lets say a tip of the horn for example. And the back of the throat. But I would never try to put it in like a cheek area, nose or anywhere skin lays on bone mass. Because you wont get a smooth surface. If you are new at modeling I would say try to keep all quads except for the two situations above until you get to know why a triangle are bad. Then when you start to learn what flows well I say use that triangle ;)
Of course let all the modelers out there start beating me down for telling you that but I'll stand up for triangle.

the 5 and 6 point stuff if you look at in topotools it actually gets converted automatically to a quad and a triangle data. Thats why this topo stuff is a very exciting way for the artist to be a artist again. If you see the combo is in a bad location thats when you change the 5 point to a directionial change poly and aim for a hole in the mesh to flow the line into.;)

Thanks, 'Doctor J' !

You da' man.

You are able to differenciate 'Tradition' from 'Rendition'.

Question: Do you construct a character differently for illustration than you do for animation or do you have a single approach that accomodates both? Clearly, a layered approach to capturing a 2D idea does not require the mesh discipline that animation requires.

Also, in the section on subtools and eyes, when you slide your cursor down to the color palette during the section where you extend the color of the eyes, what exactly are you doing? Are you picking color from the canvas or selecting color from the palette? How, exactly, is that done?

For illustration we as artists have to worry about color more than anything. And of course balance. So when I constuct a character for Illustartion, its those things I worry more about heres an example
step5.jpg

Where the red dots are is where a edge loop goes that way I can mask the area off using the polys themselves as a template. And I can seperate the armor color at a very sharp edge.
So illustration, its no holds bar on the amount of polys unless your rendering it outside of Zbrush. But its that flow I try to make.

Animation Is all about Joints and Bending areas with exception to the face. so I add better flow to the joints on polys then I do the larger areas. Animation is very strict when it comes down to triangles on joints THEY ARE VERY VERY BAD. They dont bend at all!

I would have to say the following is good for illustration and bending
1. Always the best flow in the face!
2. Even spaced polys are the best to sculpt on!
3. Elbows, Leg and Finger joints at least 3 edge loops at lower levels that way they divide flexable.
4. Creative flow on non organic objects really trips people up. ;)

oops think I missed somthing also. With illustartion your target audiance is THE most important thing when it comes down to your final composition. If that composition has a character with hands and they are not attached at all to the mesh (example) does your target audiance know that? How you make your end product with a character (eyes attached to mesh or floating inside mesh) Seperate subtools on every body part on the character. As long as you can puzzle it together in the end and make it believable than thats all that matters. I also believe in post work compositions for color overs. Taking a black and white render and painiting it photoshop really can give it more of a traditional art look.

wow really did not know where to post this.
Since the first video effects everyone here in the community that makes subtools. I guess its a Zbrush thing;)

So here you go. These videos shows how you can use a 3rd party app to pose your characters

Way smoother than transpose!!!!!

Man Zbrush is nothing without you, I even got Digital Tutor's Introduction DVD but nothing, I say nothing, can compare you! With a help at marketing you can start new gnomon studio, but don't do that we need free tutorials :D

Once again, thanks mate, never stop producing them!!

ya still alive.
been doing some unreal engine 3 videos but then found that the game engine wasnt all that. Not like the old doom3 engine where you could import your monsters into the game.
Then I got stuck rewriting 180 school days of curriculum for work since the great state of michigan went insane.
After that adventure was just about over somebody wanted me to do a workshop for middle school / high school kids
It will be released on the net shortly.
"3d 4 kids";) Of course hopefully adults will dig it also.
Should be allot of fun.
But ya I miss my home here at pixologic forums thats for sure thing were simplier when I was sculpting.;)
