This beta opens a new chapter in digital content creation. At the moment this is the only sample I can post. This is part of an upcoming Art Directing Gnomon DVD. It covers designing a costume and sculpting cloth among other things.

looking great zack. I get the feeling this will be the guy that is riding the frog/toade in the new dvd you just released?
Really imaginative work Zack, does this guy get created within the new dvd also? if so im sold!

ahh, the grand master of digital sculpting is in the house! excellent but weird stuff. I can't even begin to guess what that contraption is used for, looks like something da vinci would have cooked up if he was on crystal meth :D...
also great hearing you call zb3 a 'new chapter in digital content creation'. I have but the outmost respect for your knowledge in this field.

How much base mesh modeling is being done in Maya and how much posing do you do in Maya now with Z3.
I bought your DVD recently about mudbox, just curious why you can't reapply your displacement map to the reposed model.
nice! looking foward to the dvd

What is that plate hanging in front of the guy supposed to be?
And on this upcoming art direction dvd, is it gonna be zbrush centric or general art direction?

hey zack,
nice character! its nice to see some clothes - and more inorganic objects!
I would like to know how you changed your workflow since you work with
zb3 - especially the first few steps...do you use zspheres/primitives or
imported base meshes? do you work a lot on low lvls or go up quick ?
thx

Thanks for all the comments. Soon enough I'll be able to show images of the entire piece, as well as the practical output. This figure is just one piece of the narrative so I should probably wait to talk about the design decisions until you can see it in context. This is the Froad pilot.
CrossBones- you can still re-apply the maps to a posed character, but for me the new posing functionality in ZB3 is a faster, more creative way to reach that goal. I end up going back to Maya on a much less frequent basis to make adjustments. Now that I've gotten a little more comfortable with the ZB3 posing I only go back to Maya to "snap" points.
Feureau-The plate in front of the character will be made of a clear shielding material
-The next DVD will be ZBrush Centric in the same way that my Human Anatomy DVD was. I'll have a more extensive intro section covering the new ZB3 features, fifteen to twenty minutes, but the rest of the content will focus on using the tool to further your design as apposed to an overview of how to use the tool.
Zmith[21]-I still start by creating my base meshes in Maya. The one difference being that I can start even lower now, sometimes just with primitive cubes. This allows me to make sure I have proper scale relative to all my other creations and pipeline if my sculpt needs to fit back into production. As you know, every pipeline is different. The teams I work with render in all different software and I never know when scale is going to screw me. I've also been working on combining characters and environments in ZB lately so I need to make sure they are all relative.
-I still start with low levels and get as much detail as possible before I step up.
-This next version of ZB also has some great potential for creating hard-edge concept sculpts. I was surprised at the amount of controlled detail I was able to achieve. The DVD covers a lot of that, but I'll also be posting demos and vids on my new web site to demonstrate.
Hope this answered everything, if not please let me know.
later,
hey Zack, beautiful work and design, your figures always has so much life and dinamic forms...fantastic.
Two questions or suggestion about your training material.
-Your gnomon DVD of sculpting the man human figure, is the best source for learning male anatomy figure that i have ever seen, have you though in make a female figure DVD?
-You show a fantastic figure in a dinamic pose in the first page, in your upcoming DVD, are you goin to also teach how to sculpt a figure in a dinamic pose?.....if not can you also make a DVD of sculpting a figure in a dinamic pose..please... I have seen many of your figures in dinamic poses and they are GREAT ;) .
Thanks and i will be waiting to see more of your great work.
Cheers

hi Zack,
the first thing that came into my mind when i saw ur Frod rider is,
why did u shift from mudbox to zb3 ?
in volume 1 u used mudbox now in volume 2 ZB3
the final render [ the rider n the frod with it's mask ] will b done in maya right ?
will there b any issues in the final render since the models r from 2 different sculptin softwares ?
i have gone through both ur gnomon DVDs n both r gr8.
i'm always exicted to go through ur trainin DVDs,
so when can i place my order for volume two.
i can hardly wait.
Top class work, great scuplting. :tu:

Yo Yalao- Thanks. I do have a female anatomy tutorial underway for Gnomonology.
The second volume of the Art Direction series will go through posing the froad rider in ZB, similar to how the first volume covered posing the froad and creature in MB.
skulll_monster- I'm working on a different way of rendering my designs. I don't really like the cg quality I usually get with my renders, and I'm not interested in re-creating reality so hopefully I can come up with something a little more appropriate for my work.
3d_devil- There are a few reasons for making the switch. ZB and MB both offer unique approaches to design and character creation. I like to explore all possibilities to make sure I don't limit myself creatively. I don't like to make suggestions on how others should work, so instead I wanted to showcase this multi-software approach through my own workflow. I'll talk more about this in Volume 2 of the DVD. Its important to remember that its about the design and not the software.
There will not be any problems with the maps. Its all just low poly cages and .tif files when the day is over. You can even take a ZB hi poly mesh and import it into MB to generate a map.
The next Volume of the DVD series will be released after the next version of ZB comes out. Hopefully that will be very soon.
Since these are digital maquettes and not production models I probably won't be rendering them. However, I might make an additional tutorial for Gnomonology that covers this.
Thanks for all the great questions.

When you have that posed figure in ZB, how did you pose all those subtools at once? I.e The armor and the weapon are they posed separately?

Hey Zack.. When will you be releasing the new tutorials from gnomon? I read your section in the ballistic publishing character modelling 2 book. You have very slick designs. Your sculpting is top notch. I can't wait to see you what you do next!

Crossbones- The individual components were posed separately, i.e. the shirt, shorts, and arms. When it came to elements like the helmet, which included several subtools, I stepped down to the lowest level of division for each, exported the individual elements into Maya, grouped them, transformed the group, then re-imported each one of the elements back into ZBrush- one at a time. This way each element of the helmet snaps into its new position and stays in alignment with the other helmet pieces.
DiegoMaia- Thanks dude.
Brett- Thanks. For the second ZBrush centric dvd I'm just finishing the last chapter that outlines the process for creating the 3D print. Gentle Giant did a bad ass job on it so I look forward to sharing that with everyone. Lots of great potential. Here's a sneak image of the final sculpt and 3D print.
allFront01.jpg (javascript:zb_insimg('60458','allFront01.jpg',1,0))
allSide01.gif (javascript:zb_insimg('60460','allSide01.gif',1,0))
printFront01.gif (javascript:zb_insimg('60461','printFront01.gif',1,0))
printSide01.gif (javascript:zb_insimg('60462','printSide01.gif',1,0))
Because of ZB3's ability to handle extremely high amounts of polygons, I was able to use it to combine the figure, Froad creature, and all the subtool elements into one Tool. In ZB3 I was also able to add an even finer level of detail to the mesh pieces and put all the final touches on the piece. This really is an extremely valuable design software.

Thats crazy! Its a feast for the eyes. Its really cool seeing these all tie together. Your sketch of this character were really well thought out. Are you going to texture this as well? Or is that a surprise too? haha.

Wow! This is simply amazing work Zack (as always!) - modelling, anatomy, posing and gesture... it's all there in spades - magnificent stuff :tu: :tu: :tu:
What species/creature did you base the fish/eel head on by the way? can't quite work out what's going on with it's upper jaw....
Great!

Thanks. I appreciate the comments.
To answer a few questions about the design, it was a planned concept. I typically start from a narrative and this piece was no different. I wanted the form development of the creature (the thing strapped to the Froad's head) to offset the design of the Froad. So, essentially, the Froad is amphibious and the creature is more bird like.
Not that there is anything wrong with creating characters that are meant to appear obviously evil or foreboding, but I wanted to try to present something that called for a different set of solutions. In this case an almost cumbersome, bizarre creation made more sense for this story. I also just like taking disconnected forms and finding a rational to smash them together.
The pieces were all combined in ZB and if I have time I'd like to texture it, or just paint the 3D Print.
later,
dear zack... you truly master of your domain. i have question. i notice a bit of something. I notice that the dude's face looks like he either has to poop or is in the midst of AND the chicken creature is kinda shape like a poop, was this done on purpose? is this what's called story within a story?
cool model dude.. where the hell do you come up with this crap?? must be dem crazy nightmares.

I would like to paint a 3d print of that too. I would be surprised though if you could make that piece as is. Would the long thin pieces be to fragile?
Regardless, I really like the form. It takes you in and makes you really want to absorb all of the wonderful detail.
Wow Zack!!!
You are another Master of Zbrush (also... M..... too ;) )!!!
Very good sample of your Art...

i love the froad, its wonderful. as soon as i saw it, it put me in mind of an almost parasitic creature that uses the toad to get around, just imagine all the crazy biological gubbins that goes into that bad boy! will definately be keeping a keen eye on him. i know you dont need it but maybe you could do one with the froad lurching and its rider bouncing up on his supports. give a bit of dynamic to it and weight to the froad.
