View Full Version : ZBrush 3 Beta Images/Mark O'Shea - Doodle town. Population... me.
Hello, my name is Mark O'Shea and I work at IBM Global Services. Unfortunately my job is entirely non-CG related, but luckily that is what spare time and hobbies are for. I would like to thank Pixologic for giving me this opportunity to beta test ZBrush 3. It has been a pleasure so far.
My main interest with ZBrush has always been creating models or pictures in a rapid fashion. ZBrush 3 turbocharges my workflow. All the new brushes and their responsiveness add immensely to the modeling experience. The new MatCap materials and the realtime shadows help you visualize models faster and better. Subtools and Layers add further to workflow possibilities and workflow effeciency, and coupled with Morph Targets (per subtool) you have a very nice non-destructive modeling environment. Of course there is much more to enjoy but I will leave that for you to discover.
I can hardly wait to see what the ZBrush community produces when they have the Next Step in their hands.
An example of complex surface detail using Layers. Only the preset ZBrush 3 Alphas were used. Rendered in ZBrush and color adjusted in Photoshop.

A sunday morning doodle. Modeling with alphas is excellent and the Transpose function adds a whole new meaning to the word doodle. Rendered in ZBrush, numbers added in Photoshop. The antennae? How does active ZSpheres added as a Subtool sound?
RobotOpera.jpg
My favourite subdivided cube doodles. All started their life as a 6 polygon cube except for # 3, which is a simple chain of zspheres. The screengrab shows the actual modeling environment using Ralf Stumpf's excellent Grey Clay material (thanks).

I really like your cool, clean doodling style. Keep those cubes coming. ;)
Great stuff here. Mostly I like the heads. Would be great to see a full body
character in this style.
Cheers

Wow, those heads are amazing! I would love so much to see a time-lapse of your workflow on sculpting a head like that from a cube. The other doodles are also great.

So this is what you've been up too - I was wondering where you've been.
I love the organic details on the building - look forward to seeing more.:tu: :tu:
Thanks all. I have enjoyed myself immensely with the beta and can't wait until everyone gets the Z3 rush. It is quite humbling and slightly frightening to be here among such good artists. Hopefully I can hold on to the last rung of the ladder and share more pictures before Z-day.
arrrgh4life : Thank you. They are made in a similar fashion to my previous ZSketches (http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=25824) only now the new brushes make blocking out the main volume and form much easier and speedier. The transpose function is also very useful in the beginning stages of a model and the new materials and realtime shadows add much when visualizing the model. I will definitely be doing some time-lapses, both zscript and quicktime movies.
Stumpf : Thank you for the material. I am stretching my artistic abilities but I am working on some full body models. A scene full of them :)
Boozy : Yeah, it is pretty bad. My family is wondering where I am. They keep us in a dark and dank cellar, and the moaning around me is 24/7. Some around me look like they have been here forever, their skin taking on the blueish glare of the monitors. Luckily I am a recent arrival, though I have a feeling they are saving me for something horrific (the chain of ZSpheres I fear). Until now the worst part has been the Pixol song they make us sing morning, noon and evening. It sends shivers down my spine. Can't wait for May 15th.
Regards,
Mark

Hey man! My singing ain't that bad!! And it's your turn to be on 'the chain of ZSpheres', you know the rules!!! My skin is not blue, it's just cold down here... ;)

So this is where you've been hiding out you sneaky blighter - the hidden ZBC vault. Though it looks like there are no cobwebs here. Nice crisp, clean work :tu:
And in 4 or so weeks time I am sure there will be lots of transposed doodles being flaunted across the board (snicker, snicker).

man, those heads are so nice! i can see by all the examples that subtools have solved the problem of models with missing eyeballs. always hated those multimarkers. is that gray clay material by Ralf Stumpf available someplace or is it a ZB3 thing? sure would like to give that a try.

The sooner your released the better for all of us.
Well done for being chosen -You deserve it - you've contributed a great deal to the forum over the years.:tu: Looking forward to you inspiring us with your ZB3 insights.
Bonecradle: I am looking forward to watching you stretch your imagination with Z3. I am sure it will tickle your creative mind.
Industrypop: It is a Zbrush 3 material. Just a few short weeks now. Funny enough I had grown so used to modeling both the eye and eyelids in one mesh that most of the doodles are one subtool. But I will agree with you it is much easier and more intuitive to have seperate subtools for the eyes. It makes things much easier.
Boozy Floozie: Thank you very much. Love your two latest pictures.
I do not have much to show but I am taking some days off work next week, which should help my productivity.
Still lots to do with the form and mid level details. I need some days to collect/create alphas and experiment with the fine detail level, which was also one of my weak points in ZBrush 2. The crown is just in its volume stage, made from zspheres.

I realy like your style TVeyes, and enjoyed watching your sketch videos for z2 last night, i learnt a lot from them. Looking forward to the alpha experiment updates.

...I have to ask.
Robot Opera, does the code actualy say anything?:tu: :tu: :tu:
That is too cool!
Handlebar: Thank you. Things have changed a lot since those zscript recordings. All the new brushes make the initial volume very easy to accomplish and even the Transpose functions helps there. Loved your topology experiements :tu:
Sadicus: I am sorry. I was not clever enough to make it actually mean anything. Besides if I did the picture would need to be 3-4 times as wide :) In that case it would probably say "ZBrush Rocks!", of course with a robotic accent ;)
Had some spare time this evening and played with creating a model (not another head) entirely within ZBrush. A mixture of zspheres and zbrush primitives. I think 8 subtools in total. Much work needed but I thought I would show an example of multiple materials on a single tool. As usual, this is representative of the realtime modeling environment, i.e a screengrab at AAhalf.
A sacrificial sword I guess.

Very cool stuff you have in here. I especially like your doodle heads. They have a nice clean style to them. Something I'm still trying to learn. Keep the models coming...
