View Full Version : The Cube!

A must for the box modeling enthusiast!

Here is my latest tool! Unpack it and install it in:

C:\Program Files\Pixologic\ZBrush2\ZStartup\ZPlugs

If you do not have the directory, then create it!
This plug should work on the MAC as well.

After the installation you will find the CUBE button in the TOOL section.
When you press the button a script will run briefly and leave you in the position to simply draw a cube on the canvas without further action necessary.

Q: Cube button? Lemo's one vertex short of a polygon now!
A: The standard Cube has poles. Thus there are a lot of challenges attached with that fact. A 'real' cube is simply better to handle.

Q: Why is the Pixologic Cube the way it is?!
A: I don't know the story but I expect that in the end Sphere, Cube, Cylinder are actually from the same structure/algorithm. So they share the same basic properties. And thus the same poles etc. etc.

Q: Is it just a cube or is there something else useful?
A: The cube can be subdivided, if the smooth button is off, a subdivided cube is the result (for Zeebling, and the popular box modeling, etc...), if the smooth button is ON, a really cool sphere is created as the edges are all pulled together. THAT sphere has NO pole, and accepts a UV map much easier than the sphere beast the Pixologists throw at us! Of course it has draw backs.... I just can't come up with one right now ;).

Besides the ground breaking idea (cough cough) this is really a simple script in the core, but I had some difficulties getting it going. It worked, and once Zbrush was started again ZBrush crashed. I did not find it, but our friend and relentless scripting supporter Marcus Civis was again the knight in scripting armor. Thanks to Markus Civis mentioning of the subpalette code (or rather the lack of it in my case). Zbrush stopped crashing on me and the latest plugin of great sophistication and value could be released!

Enjoy!
And as always, show what you did with it!
Lemo your trustied used Cube Salesman
(ALways cubes with low subdivisions in stock!)
PS:Hitting Spherize in the Deformation tab pulls out the last wobble of the cube-sphere.

Lemo! Handy!

I hated those ugly cubes, but now I can make Clean Cubes with the pressing of a button.

You are a scripting wizz! :tu::tu:

Thanks,

No it's not an April Fools joke! hahaha.

and --E--.... lol... your reference with a single 'here' is about the best camouflage for any tool I have ever seen hahaha. But thanks for pointing out that thread. The method is actually so simple that you can find it multiple times. Aurick also put it into his box modeling tut if I am not wrong... MTB also had a reference if I am correct.

After making hundreds of those stupid cubes I thought it was time to:
1. Make a button
2. Make fun of the existing cube! It deserves it! 8)

Cheers and happy cubing!

PS:My Luxology April 1st joke also worked well... har har har.

Hi Lemo,

i made two new options for your Cube and Sphere plugin.

1. press "TheSphere1" button to make the sphere
2. press "TheSphere2" button to make the sphere smooth and round

Maybe you like it.

Hi Brian,

to your question: this is all made with Zbrush and it's really easy and fast to make, if you know the right way ;) .

So i made quick a script for you where you can see how i made it.

Yay! those annoying poles always made me end up with little dimples at high subdivison levels!

i hated the poles too never really understood poles on a cube:lol: but you gotta love pixologic :D because zbrush is the king!

The cube is a quadratic sort of entity, just like the other primitive objects.

But yeah, it does kind of bite.

Bingo_Jackson

They should really make the Lemocube the official cube in ZB3...or at least offer them both.

--E--
05-21-07, 11:36 AM
I could be wrong, but I think it has something to do with the way that zbrush has special masking controls on all their default tools that are not available on any other ztools.

Husse
05-22-07, 11:53 AM
Or is it just me?
When i push the cube button the screen goes back to the welcome screen and there is no cube...

Itīs really a pitty if it doesnīt work with Z3, itīs a great plug!

Hi Husse,

this Plug is really not working. Also the Sphere i made.
And there are more plugs whith no working functions.

So i'm fixing at this time my XYZ Fonts Plugin for ZBrush 3

Z3 comes with PolySphere and PolyCube which are exactly what this plugin used to provide.

Yari Jindou
05-22-07, 06:39 PM
i guess for now just like open up z2[ if you still have it lol] and make them then export as polymeshes, thats what i did. Really painter, all i find is the poles, not like the plugin?

Load Tool

Go to "Ztools" subdir.

There you will find pole-less "Polysphere" "PolyPlane" and "PolyCube". These are pole-less polymesh 3d objects, and the sphere is just like the cube would be when sub-divided.

It would be nice if polysphere and polycube came preloaded in the tool pallet... wonder why they arent, as they seem much more useful than the standard cube 3d and spere 3d.

Anyone know how to have tools "auto-load" on startup?

froyd
11-04-07, 05:01 AM
Until now PolySphere & PolyCube dont count to the native tools, you cant set up initial parameters, like xyz-size or density. I hope they'll include them in the future, making the special masking possibilities available for native 3D-tools.

You can record macros loading these tools to have them 1 click away.

Nice! thanks, Atwooki.

Poles, as long as there aren't too many of them, aren't really that big a deal. If you use a medium to low intensity setting and draw(subtract mode) into them a little, then use smooth (also lower intens. setting) they're pretty much gone at most angles. I do admit though, a pole-less mesh is the way to go. I've also seen people talk about pushing them into themselves with other programs, as a quick fix. Of course, I imagine it doesn't work quite as well. ;)

wow i feel like an idiot. i got the cube and i was just going to mention you can get the same result by taking the cube 3d with poles and using unified skin tab skin resolution > 8..skin smoothness zero>make unified skin.. then i read the last couple replies here and crusoe the painter kindly pointed out that the ztools in the tool folder do not have poles. ive been using zbrush since 3.0 came out and ... i didnt know that the tools in the folder have no poles. its not the greatest thing in the world, but it would be nice if pixologic made some mention of it ... somewhere!! i am assuming that most people are like me and assumed the ztools are the same poled meshs. stoopid.

Hi.

When I load the ZTool Polysphere it is a bout 8000 polys. I want something lower res to map a texture onto but when I Reconstruct Subdivide I get strange artifacts like overlapping edgeloops. If I take it to a very low resolution the artifacts disappear but, when I delete Higher Subdivisions and divide up again, I get 'Holes at the Poles'. How can I get a low res sphere out of this? I tried loading Atwooki's macros but even though the buttons show up as described, when pressed I get an error message saying 'Unable to Open'. Thanks!
