Toying around with Zbrush I found a way to make crystals extremely quick. Here go the step-by-step instructions:

STEP 1: Select the Polymesh3D you are going to add the crystals to.

As you see, I start with a simple plane, color blue. You may want to use something more elaborate (like a stone, or anything you have created).

STEP 2:
Add some light topography to your mesh, using whatever method you wish. Something irregular works best. You can also add materials at any time if you so want.

As you can see I'm keeping things simple for the tutorial. I used the Proyection Master, And selected a random material from the list. I like shiny, but it's not really neccesary.

STEP 3:
Back in proyection master, select the fiber brush, a color and material of your choice, and a high Z Intensity. Draw where you wish the crystals to form. This is how the result looks like while still in the proyection master:

And this is how it looks like after picking it up. Remember to pick up also the material and deformation:

As you can see this is extremely fast, and yields good results for the time needed to do it (barely minutes, under one if you are trying random stuff).
Here are another two quick examples that I did really quick. If anyone wants me to try and model some real crystals from reference, just tell me and I'll try to. You can also use this on a creature for some wacky results.

And another example:

Nothing great, but I hope you people find this useful. :)

Very cool...!! I love it when someone discovers a hidden method in ZBrush. I will have to try to think of something to use this in...great job.
