Well, I've been working my way through the Primer Zscripts and they've been helping me a lot. But I have a few questions. I watched the one where they model a nice smiley face. After watching it a couple times, I tried to make one myself. I finally got all the way to the end, but there were some things that went wrong along the way. But I'm not sure what. Sometimes I'll be cutting out the eyes or pulling out the nose and then I must do something I'm not allowed to, because it seems like my model can no longer be edited. It will still turn in the small preview on the right but I can't seem to select it in the work space. Did I drop it? How did I drop it? Can I reselect it? Whenever it happens, the edit button seems grayed out and if you choose the 3d tool, it draws another shape.

Other times, this is what happened. I pulled out eyebrows, cut away eyes, pulled out a nose, cut away a mouth and pulled out some ears. In between, I would turn the model this way and that. I also using symmetry sometimes. After I pulled the ears out, I decided to hollow them out so I press that button that cuts away - can't remember what it's called and my model disappeared. If I chose rotate, I would get that gyro thing but the model was either all black or invisible. And I couldn't seem to do anything else either, even if I cleared the layer. Not draw or anything. Then I'd press this and that, and I'd be back to starting over. Except for drawing the 3dSphere and using the symmetry tool and choosing a color and material, pretty much all the buttons I used were up in that tool bar that appears over the workspace. Anyone have any idea what I'm doing wrong?

Like I said, though, I did try it again today and I was able to get all the way through twice. But I have no idea where I was going wrong before. Thanks.

hey Kev,

the things you are doing wrong are very common mistakes, everyone makes them in the beginning.

Do NOT select any other tools while modeling!!! This is very important... If you do, you lose your editing control over the object, as you have already discovered. Those other tools are for post-modeling production, once you have chosen a position, etc, of you model.

When you are in edit mode and you choose ZCUT, the whole model becomes "inverted" in that if it was placed in another object, it would cut away in the shape of your model in edit mode. Therefore, if you wish to "hollow out the ears" etc, just use ZSUB and you'll be fine.

hope this helps, buzz
