Not sure what this will stir up, but have you ever had an inspiration from a photo, and you just couldn't go on until you MADE the damn piece? This thing has been haunting me for 2 weeks!

This is a 40% ZBrush tool, 40% ZBrush paint, and 20% Terragen.

I dunno.

At least now I can move on to something else.

Real nice, Kat! :tu:
How about some details, especially the figure.... :D

That looks truly photographic, Kathy. Spectacular work. I have a friend who refuses to use Terragen because its results look too photorealistic for his taste. As for the figure in the foreground, the clothing is really awesome. I absolutely love the pattern on the fabric and the strange "veil."

It all started with a photo of an Afghani woman in her "coverings" (I forget the proper name)

ANYWAY..

I built an object from a 3D sphere to replicate this poor woman.

I used the photo for the alpha. (inflated against the alpha mask for help)

I created a texture (starting on the object) then fnished in Photoshop (slightly adjusting the hues saturation etc).

I made the background in Terragen (Afghanistan is easy to make, there's nothing there)

Used Z to bring all the pieces together.

Created 4 "sun" lights from upper left and rendered.

Sig in Photoshop.

Thanks to the photographer (whoever you are) who snapped a picture that drove ME CRAZY!!!!!!!!!

Hi Kat . . . :)

What an outstanding job you've done here! :D The object is very well done & the material pattern, well that couldn't look any more realistic then it does. I would have to agree with Aurick, you have to look very close to see that your image is not a photograph. ;)

My wish is: that some day I'll be 1/2 the creative artist that you are today.

You should have these "Moments of Obsession" more often. Heheheh. Have a good one . . . Mark.

Kathy,

This image symbolizes the oppression that is not only gripping the women of Afghanistan but also the entire world because of terrorism. This is a strong image and very well done. I know what you mean about getting something out of your head before you can move on.

This picture is amazing. It looks very much like a photo.
The texture on the veil(?) is outstanding, as is the coloring.
As for stirring things up... It does stir some emotions and thought, but I find nothing offensive about it. It's a great work of art.

Kathy, you captured an incredible mood with this one. It haunts - because so many of us know the lot of women in Afganistan - and it moves us with it's simple beauty. Very well done. Modelling, texturing, compositing

Kat, that is totally unbelievable. That has to be one of the most beautiful pieces I have ever seen. You obviously really poured your heart into this one.

what an incredible piece of 3d-art, Kathy! this wonderful burqua-lady-portrait went straight into my private hall-of-Z-fame, being the first entry to the oriental collection (which, of course, is situated in the east-wing) :D

btw and fyi: i am lucky enough to have travelled afghanistan 24 yrs ago, short time before the never-ending war started. at that time it was one of the most beautiful countries (landscape-wise) anybody could imagine. so, though despite of what we see today on television, satellite-photos and so on, there WAS a lot there (and probably still is) - but you captured an excellent afghani vista and sky anyway! even back then it was not possible to see a woman without burqua, the only exception being little girls, tourists and the women of a nomad tribe we had the honor of being invited to, who obviously were not that straight muslim, as we were served delicious food during daytime in the month of ramadan, when you are not even allowed to make a sip of water as long as the sun is up (i sure hope, those proud nomads and others i made friends with found a way to leave taliban-county in time!). rambling on: i was part of a team doing stories for a magazine. no way we could have made photos of women, burqua or not. whenever we insisted on ladies to be seen on the photos some guys or even one of us had to dress up in a burqua and take care, that no gorillahair on the back of the hands became visible :). so i think that in case it was not done with a huge tele, it is very likely that beneath that veil in the photo you became obsessed with, there is a guy.

- juandel (a short-time burqua-wearer, too :D)

Really nice image Kathy. I especially like the texturing on the burqua (thanks to Juandel, we now what they're called). I never realized they made them so ornately. Most of the ones I've seen were just plain.

That's a really cool picture Kathy, and very strong too.
It really looks good, the robe is extremely well modeled. (And yes, I suppose I have to hand it to Terragen and you, the background is good too.)
(BTW, thanks for that interesting info Juandel! :tu: )

Kathy very nice and quite topical. Looks like a "Lady under the veil" So appro. especially at this time when we are all thinking of what is going on in the "A Country". Once again thanks for sharing your fantistic work with the group.

Very moving image Kathy, simply one of your best. It has all the elements of the kind of image that just haunts you.

Yup, Kath, what Digits just said hit home. This is a "haunting" image that sticks with you. I can see why it stuck in your head until you were done with it.

I think it's your finest work yet. Friggin' gorgeous pic! Thanks for sharing it!

Wonderful. Great subject, colors, modelling, etc.

This picture says more to me than the last ten years of flatulent speeches from NOW.

Very nice image, Kathy. But I disagree with some of the comments about women wearing burkas are oppressed. My wife wears one and she is an convert. Just because other people do things different from your set of values or norms doesn't make them evil, oppressed, wrong, et cetera.
Just my two cents.
