View Full Version : Alien Challenge

HYDE

Hi everyone!

I started this alien character a short while ago to brush-up on my Zbrush skills (or lack thereof) and haven't gotten back to it due to other obligations.

You can all see what direction I went with my character, and I would love to see what other Zbrushers might do with my base mesh, so I am offering my Ztool to the community.

Only one rule...Be Creative and Have Fun ! I can't wait to see the results!

hehe i would love to join your challenge
unfortunately i have a lot to do at the moment
but probably i can show some kind of "quickie " during the next few days

by the way
this is a good sculpt
looks quite good
my critic would be that in some areas there is a bit to much going on
i think those areas would need a bit more smoothing and a clearer structure ( e.g. the cheeks, or the nose...)

i hope you can get my point ^^ it's not so easy to explain something like that in english

greetings

Yes indeed, do the quickie sculpt when you can! Any caliber of sculpt would be just fine. I look forward to seeing other artists interpretations.

Wow I'm glad you like my sculpt, when it was on ZBC as a wip it didn't get many looks, so thanks a lot. It's nice to hear some positive feedback.

Yes, I see your point about too much detail in some areas. It's hard not to get carried away in Zbrush because it is so easy to do so.

BTW your english seems quite good, I didn't even notice!

Good Luck!

Here's an hour doodle with it. I really liked the starting shape of your model, HYDE, so I gave it a go. It gave some good inspiration! I liked your alien version too!

That looks awseome...too me that is one of the best human skin tone textures (minus the wrinkles)....kudos 2 u....KUDOS TO FREAKIN U

HYDE
01-04-07, 06:17 AM
Oh yeah, this is FUN!

Joopson-I like your initial sculpt it looks like a great start! What an interesting approach to the original sculpt. Can't wait to see the finished character.

KrakenCMT-What can I say...very cool creature. I love the lighting and textures. Would you be willing to share them? I'm glad the starting shape inspired you and happy you kept the cleft lip theme, looks cool.

Keep 'em coming, this is a great start!

I might have gone a little too far from the original concept but I had some fun.
Second material is from Erklaerbar's superb material pack,
I don't know who made the first material but it is from zcentral too.

Too far?!? No way, it's very cool. The idea is to have fun and be creative, and you've definately done that here. The material compliments the sculpt quite nicely. Thanks for the fine examples!

BTW I like the red one the best.

I thought it would be fun to try out my own challenge, (can't let everyone else have all the fun, ha-ha) so here is my initial work.

Anyway this is about 45 minutes of work so far...still have lots to do. I'll do more as I get the time. Hope you like it.

Am I breaking the rules participating in my own challenge?!?

Anyway, special thanks to Mahlikus the Black for the lighting and material. alien.jpg

I don't want to detract from the challenge but I have a problem with my mesh and posted it in the "Troubleshooting" section of ZBC. If anyone is interested in helping out, the title is "Unwanted hole in Model" (sorry, don't know how to link it)

Thanks for helping...

Hi everyone, I am back from a seemingly looong weekend and I'm glad to see this challenge is still moving forward...good to see! Keep up the enthusiasm and I can't wait to see more.

To all: If possible, it would be great if anyone was interested in offering there lighting and/or materials. I know many people are interested in them and love the results they are seeing. Don't worry, it's only optional...but you'll be making so many drooling onlookers soooo happy!

HYDE
01-10-07, 07:34 AM
Uh oh ...looks like the thread stalled. Any updates in progress?...Anyone?

A special thanks goes out to marcus_civis for the gruelling task of fixing the hole in my mesh and the painful task of trying to make my Mac recognize his PC fix. Many thanks to you. This is just another testiment of how cool the ZBcommunity is. Thanks Marcus...I hope to free up some time to start working on it again.

thanx for the ztool! after some tweaking at the lowest res it became pretty apparent to me, what i wanted. this is my first attempt at a realistic face, enough surreal junk for me. found some great vids to help, and i got this
http://www.uploadfile.info/uploads/4e83feb656.png
i really like it. still need to use the projection master on it though, for neck wrinkles, then i'll do a texture.

wammerl
02-21-07, 07:09 AM
hehe
i definitely like him
the face looks quite real
but i don't like the ears .... i think they are a bit to big and the structure / forms should be a bit finer

but nevertheless a great sculpt

Indecom4000
02-21-07, 01:17 PM
thanx, they do seem to not really fit, i'll see what i can do, but yea, thanx for the crits.

Indecom4000
02-22-07, 04:38 AM
here is an update. done with the modeling, just testing a color scheme. how are the ears now? sharper details, but i wanted them about the same size.
alien_render.jpg

sadicus
02-22-07, 06:15 AM
Looks good.
:b3: The sharpness of the mouth is nicley defined.
:b3: also i like the cavity contours

wammerl
02-22-07, 10:45 AM
it's definitely an improvement :tu:
but i still think the ears are the weakest part of this character.... but that's because the rest is really great
don't know whether even more ear-detail would be overdone...??

keep going

Indecom4000
02-22-07, 12:34 PM
thanx, but i ran into a problem. my ztl seems to be corrupt. go to the questions and troubleshooting and read my post there. i will need someones help if i'm going to be able to even continue.

Indecom4000
02-23-07, 05:42 AM
i wasnt able to fix the problem, so i just kept texturing with only one res level. i lost the material i made yesterday so i had to redo that. also need to fix the seams, but they arent that noticeable until u get close.

Indecom4000
02-27-07, 07:26 PM
yeah thanks, spent some good time learning with that. first time I realized that I could really pull out some great work with zbrush. most of my other stuff was just adequete. Really loke learning with this, and hope to continue to improve my techniques.

HYDE
02-28-07, 09:19 AM
Well, I created this challenge for fun, but also hoped to help expand someones way of thinking. If an artist is in the position to modify somebody elses work, they seem to gain a greater sense of responsibility toward the project, and look at it with a new "eye".

I also think everyone gets a chance to prove to each other that they can do it while also learning from each other...makes you stretch a little as an artist.

I am happy to hear about your improvements with Zbrush, I hope you continue.

BTW- I learned a lot myself during this challenge! I'm glad to see that it is still going.

alien_for_challenge.jpg

I prefer the neck on your alien I have to say, and really like your nose/eyesocket joining.

this just has some ambient occlusion added as a texture from maya, going to use this as a basis for the final texture. I find adding an A.O. texture helps me in the detailing process.

the thread for w.i.p on my alien can be found here (http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?p=335165#post335165) - thanks guys!!

Looks great slocik, keep up the good work on your alien dude. He looks kinda ape-like to me (Mike Mignola would be proud...he loves big ape-like characters.)

You should think about starting your own thread with him, to get more people looking at your progress. I'm sure the community would like to see the progression, besides it may get lost in the middle of the "alien challenge" thread, which is geared towards manipulating an existing ztl mesh.

If you get a chance, try to create an alien from my original base mesh and post the results...it's pretty cool to see everyones interpretation of my original ztl mesh.

It's interesting how all of these new characters were spawned from one single base mesh. You can see a sort of evolution happening between the different versions that can all be linked back to the original in one way or the other.

Keep it up!

Cool stuff!!! :D

Actually i wanted to do a thred in main forum after i finsh this work, but my zbrush crushed after i finished it, and i didnt save once, so im not gonna finish it for a long time. Thank You !!!!

slocik

.ztl - zbrush model format, 3d
.obj - zbrush and other aplications model format, 3d
.zbr - zbrush picture format, 2,5d

HYDE
03-16-07, 12:48 PM
Okay, launch ZBrush and go to the tool pallette ("paintbrush tip" icon on the top-left if your settings are default) and click on it. Next, click the Load Tool button. Lastly, find the ztl file.

That should work for you.

Yeh sure man, just select ur subtool, and select the mat and colour u want, then under colour select fill object. You have to make ur u have Mrgb turned on. Simple as that. So for the eyes i just selected toyplastic and black and just filled the spheres. :D

Okay, this is my first post to the forum, here is my go at your alien. I thought your head looked kind of like a deer/camel creature when I was looking at it so I went with that angle. It's an alien right? So why not? Anyway, it's about an hour and a half of work. Sorry I didn't paint it, maybe I'll repost it in the future when I have the time. Anyway, it was a good diversion, hope you like the sculpt.

This is an original character design, simple and random. The low-poly geometry rings in at 1840 polys. Modeled in 3Ds Max 9 and sculpted in ZBrush.

While coloring him, I used a toned base color painted in ZBrush, as well as ZappLink/Photoshop to apply reptilian skin.
