View Full Version : ZBRUSH FORUM CHALLENGE - Show your first work!
Hi all, I was scrounging around my collection of backup CD's when i stumbled across somthing that brang back some memories, my first three attempts at zbrush, which were also my first 3 attempts at 3d, done back in the day(some time around mid 2000, i think with a demo version of 1.13 maybe?) I had completly forgetten that I had made these and i also apparently, had forgotten how much i sucked back then. If i remember correctly I didn't even know that there was a layer pallete when I made these.

If anyone else wants to share their first attempts at the program we all love, post them here, it might help some of the newbies realise that there is light at the end of the very long newbie tunnel.

lol, ever noticed how in all our old pics we find some excuse to not have to do the ears? I've used headphones, used alien ears, placed the characters hand in the way, and used a helmet to cover up or avoid doing ears. None of my old heads have ears. That griffin, is not bad :) :tu:

hours prior playing around and getting familiar with ZBrush's tools first.
Nice to see all your first efforts too, and seeing how you've all progressed since.
Well done :)

Hi.My name is shikuri. ;)
I am one in the first stage when this picture is existing.
This image was made from the demonstration version of ZBrush1.23. This is made of two parts which are the head and the body.
At this time, I did not know adjusting the numerical value of a polygon yet.
Therefore, neither a hand nor a leg was able to be made satisfactorily.
And adjustment of a lighting was not known, either.
And how to change the size of a screen was not learned.
The background was made from photoshop.
And while it has been poor also at my English, it is not progressing. It does not change with this time ...

That's really great painting, Zhuzhu! And welcome to ZBC. :)
I hope you will have fun modelling, just click on a sphere tool and draw it then in the Transform palette, click on the Edit switch (it's just below the first lit up cursor). Or hit "T" on your keyboard.
Click outside to rotate. Draw on the model to model.
Modelling is very simple, you just use the 4 modes in edit mode, each have their own function although most people just use Draw (the cursor +) and Move, second after cursor.
Experiment and see what you like for yourself, if you really want to see a great modelling demonstration, download Ken Brilliant's alien script. It's awesome!
You can find it here: http://www.pixolator.com/zbc-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=005141&p=
Have fun!

Nice to see how different everyone approaches ZBrush
Ive been reading and trying and reading again
downloaded a lot of scripts though I dont do that my self yet
And now I understand a lot of nessecary elements of the program
stil I am tinkering a bit not getting exactly what I want
But I m getting there soon
Here is my latest just finished
I called it Diamond Bark
Played with the render fog settings alphas and some lightning flattenlayers is off
http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/uploaded_from_zbc/200306/user_image-1055337237nwd.jpg
And this one is with eight layers but ZBrush crashed before I could capture the nice one so that is lost
http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/uploaded_from_zbc/200306/user_image-1055337611hkt.jpg
I know they are not masterpieces at all
but it shows what you can do with just a bit of basic knowlege of ZBrush
I think it is incredible software once you
master it

OK - You asked for it. ;)
This is my first head and first model in 3D other than farting around with Bryce, Vue and Poser. Using other peoples models was very unsatisfying. headexpress1.jpg The first day I downloaded a low poly head from a post. I do not remember who's it was. It was a few hundred poly's. Did the whole thing with the inflate brush and move because I had not figured anything else out yet. Way to many poly's too soon.
03.jpg Hye, these is the first first work. But someone helped me to do it. The really first work I made alone is on the main forum.

Hi I just started out using Zbrush and I have to say !!I LOVE IT!!. Here's my first model took me a while about 6 hours (but i have definitely got the bug) and the geometry is kack, but I'll get the hang of it in the end. Cropped down in photoshop and applied quick blur filter pass as at time I did not understand fully render options. Anyhow any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
After learning it in 4 days I got a chance finnaly to put together something from start to finish and I love it! As any thing ells in life I cant get better if other ppl dont give me feed back so please send me a tell and give me sugestions :)

Hi, this was my first zbrush job from last fall. I had tried posting it before, but there was a snafu with my login that just got resolved.
Here is my zsphere construction for this fellow.
Followed by his skin
Then lots of higher subdiv sculpting ensued leading to
a check of the polygroups
Then a surface render
And next is the core of the idea. I took a leaf I had drawn in illustrator, converted it to photoshop, loaded
it as an alpha in Zbrush, then used it as a cookie cutter
for transparency (NOTE: this had to be the last step before dropping to 2.5D as Zbrush was crashing all over the place with invisible geometry. Could not even save and load the file. It took a few go's to get geom and uv mapping just where I wanted it.) This is post painting the leaves, rendering, and background having been cleared to transparent in photoshop.
Then his first application (as a gif version here, pdf too big)
And finally his placement in the forest( as a jpg here, pdf too big. Note that the margin got cropped when I did a jpg for here. It does actually have a little white space around it.)
This was my first application of Z brush, having only picked it up in August at Siggraph 06, so any feedback and or suggestions are more than welcome!
Thanks,
tom

Here is my first work.
This was back in the 1.23b days (before Zspheres, millions of polys, GI renders).
Made with the demo, this image won a contest (the award being the full version of the program). God it seems like only yesterday but I think it was almost 4 years ago.

Megatronics: How did you get your dog ears stretched so well? I have just started a dog and I am already having fits with the ears.
Skylertonne: I seem to recognize that guy on the right too! I think I have seen him a couple of times now. And the center is looking Much smoother than your initial face! Shaping up nicely.
Dani: Interesting geometry, what do you have planned for it. Also a lovely job with the texturing!
Mahlikus: Very nice! Although if I came in with something like him, it would not have gone down so well. "Explore your dark side...And help create a community bike trail!" just does not seem to ring quite right... grin

Megatronics: How did you get your dog ears stretched so well? I have just started a dog and I am already having fits with the ears.Hi, tbsy. I started off with making this Zsphere...

Which resulted to this when converted to polymesh...
Image2.jpg
With this lo poly version I moved the points (vertex?) on the tips
of the ears up and to a point.
Cranked up the geometry then push, pulled and fine tuned...

my first work in zbrush hmm... i have a series that would be concidered my first work as a cluster of a centralized idea, my mmo.
This is supposed to be a gragantum tree at the center of a civilization
val home town.JPG
this is one that took me a long time and everything except for the egg like thing is 2.5d. it was on layers, i had barely any working knoledge of zbrush not sure if i joined the fourm or not at that time. this was last summer so it was around 5 seprate images. it was fun. i did look at some tuts but like only one, it was mostly just experimentation and a really rough storyboard idea.

Yes yes, I owe much to Digital Tutors! I didn't mean to take anything from them. What actually happened is that my own personal image didn't show up in my last post, so if you go to my website, you'll see some exercise samples I've made by following some of the Digital Tutors tutorials. (They are highly recommended, by the way!) But those will be taken down once I have my own portfolio, of course. Sorry if anyone thought I was trying to be sneaky!
I'll try to post the picture I intended to show here in my first post... RegRender2.jpg

Im not trying to be anal or nitpick, its just people around here are very serious about that kinda stuff. Some people have had their work stolen & used on other sites. Ive even seen people in this forum claim they've modeled something, only to be completely disproved & called out by the original artist. Plagerism can just get ugly around here.
MattWoods
04-23-07, 06:34 AM
Plagiarism (and I'll spell it correctly for you,) is a strong word to have associated with my first venture into the ZBrush community. I would consider it a complement to Digital Tutors that their iconic tutorials are so much a part of the digital art world that some of us may not have thought it always necessary to credit the source. Like seeing someone paint themselves a Mona Lisda or something -- you don't assume they are trying to pass it off as their own original. I do see your point, and I concede that in hindsight it would have been nice for me to include credit to Digital Tutors in my *personal* website. That will be rectified. But I never posted anything from Digital Tutors in this forum, nor have I ever posted anything here that was not 100% of my own creation, aside from the use of a loose concept sketch drawn for me by my girlfriend, with her permission, for me to create this female character in 3D. (Thanks again Erin!) And it was her idea for me to post here, but now I'm not feeling so welcome in this community.
I do take plagiarism VERY seriously, as well as the implication that I may have done so. If anyone else comes across this thread, and you feel that I am in the wrong for any reason, please add any thoughts you may have. I'm hoping my initial "welcome" to this community won't be an example of the rest of my time spent here trying to interact with fellow artists.
By the way XxDarkMessiahxX, last I checked, you didn't credit the sources for those inspiration pics you've borrowed for your own Pumkinhead posting. That may be good form, considering the issue you're arguing.
XxDarkMessiahxX
04-23-07, 11:52 AM
First off, Im not turning this into an argument thread, and I apologize if it came across as though I was acusing you of plagiarism (thanks for the correct spelling) And it was definately not my intention to make you feel unwelcomed here either.
Dont get me wrong, I love Digital Tutors. Ive got 20+ videos from their Maya & ZBrush collections. Ive just seen people around here post models and try to take credit for models they've taken right off a DT CD.
As for my Pumpkinhead thread, I feel that images Im using for reference are hardly relevant, considering the only thing Im claiming as my own is the model that built from scratch. In all honesty though, I'll include google as a refrence if anyone feels it's necessary.
Sorry for any misunderstanding & welcome to the community.

My first full model and texture test.
It's far from finished in any way, shape or form and will probably end up in the bin, but I thought I'd post something to pass the time waiting for ZB3.
The idea behind it? Just something that popped in my head at the time.... a kind of mutant with no mouth, eyes or ears, hence the title "See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil"

This is one of my first sculptures in Zbrush, still learning a lot of the program, getting my sculpting skills in the program up to par first. Please let me know what you think. I think the next step is to rebuild the topology so it is less polys in areas. I plan to do an illustration with it.
One of the things i am doing is just sculpting a ton of stuff and saving the tools. i plan to have certain ones up for free use so people can play with them as they wish. I hope i am able to contribute to those that need help even though I am still learning myself.

Matasorapit, try going to prefrences>memory>compact mem and see what its set at. I think the general rule of thumb for ZBrush 2 was to not exceed the amount of ram in your system with that #... so 1 gig of ram means dont go over 1024, 2048 for 2 gigs of ram, etc... hope that helps. Also try the prefrences>performance option and see if you should be using multithreading.

hi all:tu: anny good tut how to learn zbrush3
I just asked this over in the Digital Tutors forums. They said that there should be a new training video out soon that covers the new features of ZB3. Keep an eye out for Meats Meyer's new one too over at The Gnomon Workshop. Their site says it's coming out June 20th.
If you're eager to learn now though, I suggest starting with the the videos they both have for ZBrush 2. The same basic workflow still applies to ZBrush 3, just without the newer features. Gnomon's running a 20% off sale until May 31st on anything having to do ZBrush, so now would be the time to get it.
Ive got a copy of the ZBrush / Maya Pipeline DVD Im looking to get rid of cheap if you're interested.

This piece was sculpted and painted by my 3 year old son. I of course turned off the zadd for him when it was time to poly paint, chose the std brush for him to brush with, toggled on x-sym etc, but all the brush work is his. I think it speaks volumes.

hi everyone,
glad to be here. very fine community with pro´s, semi´pro´s an whatever, respecting each others.
after weeks of waiting for my new comp (although i bought zbrush, but had no time to work with it at work) i started yesterday with my first steps (not to mention my really first try. i forgot to save as a tool and away it was..:-) ).
i started with a standard zsphere. doodling around with the basic tools to get a feeling for the handling. i always try to do following points when starting to get a grip on the model:
the big form influences the small form.
try to make a "logical" model ( mostly skeletal logic)
try to get the right expression.
avoiding patterns (i missed it. i used the horny horns^^).
try smooth out the proportions
took about 15min for this sketch (time for getting familiar with the tools not included. thx at this point for all the great tuts here and at the zbrush-wiki)
//edit:
minor update:
that prog is like swimming in an ocean, no shore in sight with all this tools and options^^.
just working on the details, between all those tutorials and infos i have to read. experimenting with brushes and shaders.
//edit:
time to leave that first work as it is.
the main handling of the basic modelling tools is no problem, but i still have probs how to handle subdivisions, distorted parts of the mesh and texturing.
was fun and now it time to dig deep into zbrush and the tutorials again
to get a proper workflow.

Hi, everyone! my name is Anmar Almallak I'm from Iraq "please call me vagabond". I've got interested in this challenge so I thought it would be a good opportunity for me to break the ice and get into the Z-Brush community. I've wanted to do this for so long but I have been overwhelmed by the great quality of artworks posted. :D This model was an example I've showed a friend of mine just to demonstrate what can be done in Z-Brush with a little bit of creative juice, I made a sketch and followed it but it was never finnished
Oh! I also like to tell you guys about what happened to me lately. A point of change in my life when I've got accepted in UCLA for an MFA in Animation. But most of the samples I've sent were drawings.
Thank you all! and bless you for your very existence have made this earth a better place.

elektro,
found it ^^
take a look at supertheoretical
http://www.subdivisionmodeling.com/forums/showthread.php?t=907
if ur interested, i found another very nice site
showing the megamonstertheoretical site of topological meshmodelling
http://www-viz.tamu.edu/faculty/ergun/research/topology/
check out the modelling tool and the vids there.
absolutly fascinating site about the mathematical aspects and their
direct output to 3dmodelling very nice sculptures (i like that clean logical symmetric meshes and their rendered output)

Greetings all, I am quite a new member to this forum and quite a new user of Zbrush. But since I started to use the program I have learned much. The very first model I created was somekind of test-rabbit. I tried almost everything starting from symmetry, mesh dividing, colorizing and so on. But at the end I was satisfied and here is my first model:

this is my first actual try at using zbrush. Its a little out of proportion here and there because i used zspheres which im not quite used to. I went for a kinda cartoonish looking old guy.

cant get rid of my first work. i worked on more texturing and skinning.
its still hard. i dont like the big horns so far. maybe some update later.

My first, and I mean FIRST, attempt at a ZBrush model. I've got experience in trueSpace, Carrara, and Blender, but ZBrush blows them all away for organic modeling. 45 minutes of work on this. Quite proud of myself, really :)
Used Std brush, tweak, inflate, and a medium sized rake.

Hey all, I come across this forum and thought I would share my very first creation in ZB3. Actually, this would be my very first 3D Model made from from scratch ever! :D I have played around with Poser and Bryce a little but never really enjoyed using someone elses models and even though I have made some interesting things...it's just not the same. If I can't make it all from nothing then why bother; right? :D
Anyway, here it is, I hope you enjoy & thanks to ZBrush....I am excited to learn more!
Thanks! Comments are always welcome :tu:

Mi primer modelo. Me llevó 5 horas hacerlo. Zbrush 3.1 + Photoshop. Estoy trabajando en el cuerpo.
Vampiro_web.jpg
hmm I wonder if it'll let me post this time. lol. My first work was actually a 2.5d drawing just playing around. kind of a nature scene with trees, plants and rocks. zbrush 1.55 demo actually. Unfortunately I lost the image when my hd kicked the bucket. Oh well.
First model was done in 2.0. it was actually a skin I revamped for the now dead Sonique2.0 beta. all I did was make an alpha of the old skin and import/make3d. added a couple materials and voila. Still looking for an image of it. Will edit post when I find it. MTB(Mahlikus the Black) was actually one of the people that influenced me to get zbrush in the first place when I saw what wonderful skins he was making. I've stopped playing with zbrush and finally got serious about a year ago with making my own basemeshes. I've also been using zb3 so much that poser, vue, daz|studio, have dust growing on them. lol.
so until I find the sonique skin, here's my first Z3 work. Not too fancy. hair was done post in cs2. FaedrahCol.jpg
First work ever in Zb.
Made in Zb2.
