This is my first work in Zbrush ... I used one of the default tools as a jumping off point.
I looked at the app years ago and found it hard to get my head around. 3.1 rocks! I just downloaded the 30 day trial version this morning.

I just wanted to cheer everyone on.
It's always wonderful to see those willing to share the really first works with Zbrush so that progress can be seen over time. For some I think you missed the point of this thread, but time will tell.
Welcome to 2008 to everyone here and viewing, keep encouraging new people to post here, it's rather interesting in the pattern developing and should help provide useful tutorials and threads to help get everyone upto the level they desire to be at.

prior to using zbrush for the first time i had done some modeling and sculpting with maya.
i'm not sure if these are my first models, but they are the oldest files that i have, made back in zbrush 1.55
i have no clue what the thing on the left was supposed to be, a tree maybe?maybe its upside down.
its interesting to see how caracatured the face is, i still have a problem with making eyes too big at the beginning. and still occassionally find myself sculpting with overexaggerated features then later sizing them down, too many years drawing comics i suppose. Jason do you still have rabbits(looking at your first post in this tread)? i have four, poo and roo wouldve been great names, its like a minefield even though i sweep like 10times a day.
ZBrush Document.jpg
I didn't realize this thread was for everyone to post their first works, including those of us who have been around awhile. I though it was only for the recent crop of newbies, so I didn't post. I got ZBrush in March 2002. I looked through my archives and old ZBC threads and found this one from April 12, 2002. I think that makes it my oldest head model. Prior to this, I only did vases, a turtle, M&M's...stuff like that.

phariahbob, not bad, if that is supposed to be a bullet entry and you're striving for realism you need to crush the skull in a bit, if you look up some real images of bullet wounds (not the fake movie type) the bone will collapse, esp depending on the calibur of the round.

Hi everyone!
Just started ZBrush last week with a DVD tutorial. Didn't have much 3D experience other than Google SketchUp... however, loved ZBrush's intuitive organic sculpting. Felt really natural.
Background of this pic is of course a classic photograph - location here in Thailand.
Will probably not polish this model more than this (even though it needs a lot more to be done). Would like to go on to other models and also get into abstracts. Anyone have any tips for abstract ZBrush art?? Would love feedback and comments.
Cheers! ALEX

Here's my first attempt at modeling using ZBrush 3 demo version. I love software and it's ease of use. Of course this is really basic compared to what some people are creating. Can't wait to polypaint this guy and then start on a full character sculpt. This took me about 2 hours but I did watch all the ZClassroom videos which I'd highly recommend to any other newbies!
C&C would be appreciated :D

tauntaun2.jpg I just started Learning ZBrush3 and apart from playing around with some of the tools, I decided to model a Tauntaun from Star Wars. Unfortunately I messed up the ZSpheres on the fingers and toes and can't seem to get rid of the pinching so I will be redoing it from scratch at a later date. I have seen some better tutorials for doing fingers so I don't think I will have this problem next time.

I don't know why my image is not showing up. It worked in the preview.
hi, this is my very 1st zbrush attempt - in fact - this my 1st 3d model ever,
I had no previous 3d experience (except for previous real-clay modelling :) ) when downloaded the ZB trial version ..
this guy looks awful, but I love him - as I had never ever thought of being able to do 3d-whatever, unless I sculpted this "great" one :)
I fell in love with ZB from the very first minute I saw it ..

I've been a regular visitor to the forums but never had the time to experiment with zbrush.
All i did so far was trying to get comfortable with the sculpting tools.
So this is my first zbrush project and post.
It took me about 4 hours to get to this point.

Okay, cool- finally a topic to which I can post some work without feeling much shame. I have to say, I'm very impressed at some of the first works being shown here. Well, this isn't the very 'first' thing I did on ZBrush, but it's the first sculpt I actually took beyond the 'doodling' phase. It's still pretty terrible- I didn't know anything about topography or how to paint. I just wanted to try and do a sphynx cat. I didn't even have a good method for doing the wrinkles. So, it ended up looking like a play-doh sculpt.

This place is awesome - I've been modelling environments and props full time for 12 years and wanted to try stuff a bit mre curvy heheh...bought some Super Sculpey first, had a play round then got the ZB demo. Into my second week and loving it, like a kid in a candy store. Just waiting on a payment for some freelance stuff and i'm slapping my money down for this awesome piece of kit.
Looked at ZB many many years ago and thought "wha?" wish I'd persevered.
Heres my first model...i did a tutorial skull first tbh but I'd prefer to show my first attempt at making something for myself so really this is my second model....sorry.
This model isnt finished yet, its based on a photo of Bill Burroughs so I want to get some real aging in there. I tried out the topology stuff last night and want to try the poly painting as that looks very fun indeed.
I'm really finding the Scott Spencer and Eric Keller books incredibly useful, thoroughly recommend both of them!

This was my first one, was based of the Locusts from Gears of War, I have to go back to it and fix some stuff up once I get some newer stuff done. Cool to see the concept artist for Marcus here :D Gears was awesome cant wait for the sequel.
I dont think I had the normals all working properly gotta fix some of them and make displacments.

Nice start two pinacoladas. He feels a bit puny for a Locust though. He's got some anatomy problems though. Bulk him up big time.
I cant wait for the second game too. The latest gameply footage looked sick. If you're really into Gears and 3D modeling, I highly recommend the d'artiste Character Modeling 2 book. Its got a breakdown of the whole character creation workflow.

Well, guys, here's my very first work in ZBrush. I hope some of you like it, and that you can give me some advice about finishing this model. After all, it is still a WIP. The first problem I have are the teeth and the alpha I will use on the horns.

I modelled the body more off a body builder style, i think my normals are messed up and if i had displacements he would probably have a little more bulk. Tho he is skinny compared to the ones in the game.
My friend has that Character Modelling 2 book they have a really good workflow theres a lot of good stuff in it. I'd like to figure out how to do hair with alphas as well so much stuff to learn so little time. I did a model of Marcus but i rushed it to much, i'd like to go back and re texture it. lots of its bland and not very detailed it was a model I did before the locust that i never got to texturing. Maybe I'll post it in the second zbrush thread...
