This critter was inspired by a whale louse, (I didn't know whales could get lice) but mostly just fantasy. I started to do some research on parasites for the image, but didn't want to get too icked out and scratch myself all day.

The electron microscope look was achieved by using the Radial settings on the light properties.

Out of sight, out of mind, right?

Once again, you amaze me Ken! :tu: :tu: :tu:
I've told others, including Pix about this, but here's a book you should check out if you can find it...
Microcosmos
It's by Jeremy Burgess, Michael Marten, Rosemary Taylor, published by Cambridge University Press.
ISBN 0 521 30433 4

This is a book giving a look at the world you portray, as well as a close-up view of the commonplace...Ever want to see the microscopic difference between an un-cooked and cooked potato?

Wonderful work, Ken!

The radial light settings are under Lights :b4: Modifiers :b3: Type :: Radial

I used two in this scene. They light in the opposite direction of where you move them on the Light sphere.

There are no color shots, it was all done in shades of gray.

Reminds me of some photos and video I've seen recently of dust mites-nasty little critters that are everywhere.

Creepy and beautiful at the same time, Ken. Nice work!

I believe Gray Whales suffer from these guys a lot. One of two major external parasites the other being Whale Barnacles.

Whale barnacles imbed themselves in the whale's skin, especially around the head, back and tail; The cyamid crustaceans called "whale lice" cluster about the barnacles and in the folds and slits of skin. They are thought to eat dead skin cells as they slough off the whale, while barnacles are filter-feeders that stain microscopic food from surrounding water.

Thus, these particular creatures probably do not harm the whale, although they may be irritating.... A large Gray Whale may carry 100 pounds of barnacles and god knows how many Whale Lice!!!!

Super cool image Ken.
