I like the coloring on the top image. Hard to comment on the rest. It's your design to follow through with.

First thing, the model looks really good the only thing that I suggest is that the upper back tooth should look more like it is going into some type of gums for at the moment it looks to me like an extrusion skin or something with the colouration of a tooth.
As for materials and textures always try and make your creature match the environment that it would be found in if encountered in real like. So if your creature is some jungle reptilain beast look at snakes, lizards and other large reptiles for ideas on colourization and scale texture.
From nowing what environment your creature is comming from it will also help light and render your scene. Continuing with the jungle idea, I suggest looking for a preistoric like back ground (if you can find an HDRI image it would be way cooler cause it would really help with the lighting) and then composite your character to match its environment.
I also suggest that you make a simple rig for your character (if you haven't already done so) so that you can pose him "for the camera". When posed lock your camera's position and use the "user view" or an different camera to work with positioning the lights. I suggest a 3 point lighting system and if you do not know how to set one up simple look on the net and you should be able to find lots of tut's.
When you are happy with your render in your modeling program be it Maya, XSI, Max what ever I would then take the image into Photoshop and fix up my render where I just couldn't get the effect I desired in my modeling program.
I hope what I tried to say made some sence and will be of some help. Keep up the good work :)
