The 2nd attempt looks more organic then the 1st attempt. I suggest trying a mixture of both and go from there. Also if you presentate your guy as either a lighter colour or with a lighter background it would help people see the character easier and give you greater feed back. Other then that it looks like its a good start, keep modeling away :)
