All roads lead to Zbrush my friend.
Trust me by the time I get to lesson 8 it will be head modeling
But other than That I just Posted
The human Study lesson 6
The human head
This will go on to making the whole human body correctly. with good topology and design. After the head though, I will be introducing Zbrush to my class so it might give you the chance to learn workflow alot better.
Lesson 7 will be UV layout
Lesson 8 The bust (intro to Zbrush)

Thanks very much for the very very useful tutorial, believe me is not frequent to see tutorials that take in care the more obvious things of a program and you did it in a master way!

ps: your website is plentifull of high quality art

thank you thank you twas nothing.
If everyone shared just one thing they exceled at the internet would evolve us in ways we couldn't imagine;)
of course the blog has set us back a few notches on the evolution tree;)
Good thing WIKI was their or we would all be chimps.
I have added some Orthographic Views to the site that might be useful. They are the human rendered out in wireframe highres. Sadly the only program I could find that would preform it without render node hell was poser. If you read my comments on the site you will find my distaste of using such a program. But when in rome I guess would be the case. I used it as a tool not a way of art;)

I just got done with lesson 7 and lesson 8
Lesson 7 covers Aligning you characters facial feature based on Andrews Lewis approach of measuring (Andrew Lewmis was by far one of the best instructor of art and produced some of the best drawing manuals I have ever read;)
Leason 8 Is a UV lesson all UVS done by hand in the UV editor
and finally lesson 9 will be Zbrush intro using the head as a base model.
Then 10 and on will go through the rest of the body
hope ya enjoy so far

I Released The 2nd UV video First, When you have no option but to use the first UV square the trick I show you works ever time. I warn you it is not for the fate of heart. But it is a good trick to learn when your dealing with a game engine that doesnt know what the heck a UV set is;) Anyway enjoy the show and the site has a little supprise for you when you walk in the door.
Happy learning

u see you are my teacher......just how wonderful you are....:):tu:
hey....i am making some good progress in maya.....:), learning to model simple things..... cars and humans no details though.....by the way .....please please please teach me lighting in maya......
i am currently in an institute paying 20,000 for maya and 10,000 for max....(indian money) .....well the faculties dont know about lighting at alll...:((, so they skipped that ....in maya and max...and in max they skipped rigging....the lighting part i somehow managed to do....thoough i still dont know how to do it.....
you see ....here its very difficult to find one who teaches you things properly...:(, there are institutes though which require you to pay 50,000 to 1 lakh for max or maya....its the same there too....and i cant afford that much tooo....:(, so paying 500 to 1000 on net per month and downloading stuffs from you peoples and learning things.....thats why i told you at the begining...
"you have no idea on how you are helping me.....:)"......
keep up the work
cannedmushrooms
11-05-06, 11:01 AM
well Im glad they are helping
Looks like the coffee is good where your at also lol;)
I have been wanting to cover both lights and rendering for awhile now I am no expert by all means but who is;)
I also need to make some videos on portfolio development so Rendering and lights will have to be covered first anyway.
My site is getting very cluttered looking so I'm trying to get the site to be easyier to look at;)

11-06-06, 03:17 AM
thanks , thanks, thanks a million........can you also give me some good tute links on the lighting stuffs and skinning the characters toooo.....
and i have a few questions......
1.how to put that realistic human skin to the characters?
2.can i use mentalray for all my rendering needs?
3.in my area they say...(edge extrusion methord) is the best for modeling like face and all....is it so....?is there no alternative...?, they regard that methord as high as possible.....and say that u can make a high detailed character with that...and industry follows...bla bla bla.....
ummmm.....thats all i can think of now.....i will ask them as soon as my little mind gets cluttered again...:)
ok....one more.....
Can i model vehicles using NURBS ....is it ok.....some say , that you cant attach all the surface and those edges will stand out and the model will look bad.....? is it so?....
once again , thanks mate...:)

If you have ever wondered about UV groups and the correct way to layout UVs.
This is the video.
The last video was tricking The UVS into using ever bit of space and was meant for advanced layout. Game engine mapping. (lesson 14b) where UV sets wont work.
This one is for the artist, where details are the things that matter most.

Thats a pretty easy topic I'll try to hammer that out this week.

This first video I'm uploading the picture to get the attetion of the Zbrush users via the gallery because I wasn't really sure where to stick this as tutorials go.
It is a seperated part that deals with making a stain glass window but the whole video has no maya in it what so ever.
But it is used for the next lesson where I light the window and fill a room with color;)

wow......:)
looks like lot of things happened while i was busy upgrading the computer of mine.....
just upgraded from p4 1.8 , 845pbz, 1 gig ram, fx 5200 to
x2 3600, asus m2n -e , 1 gig ram, 7600 gt......:), thats the max that my budjet can allow me to do.
now holly....your site has changed the color.....i like it....:).
and it feels organised .......
and yes, lightinggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg
thanks , thanks, thanks...:)
downloading right now....:)
Ok....fiished downloading.....:), now....i noticed something....
the tutee that says "maya part2" is both for zbrush and maya...is it??
just one 116 mb one is it?????
no more files......is it????
i downloaded all the lighting ones from the maya section too...thanks a lot my good friend....:)
and there appears to be one problem in the site.....where it says "useful stuff"....both the internet explorer and firefox said...."java application failed " or something like that ....i can see a white small bar and nothing else...:(
hey it was nice of you to post a gallery there....thats some plenty of stuff in there.........:), you are truly amazing:tu:
cannedmushrooms
12-05-06, 03:15 AM
thats correct ;)
I had to make somthing intresting to drag into maya. (video 2)
So the project makes a stain glass window.
The site is buggy. I started out with an amazing site but then found out that it wasn't compatable with anything but internet explorer. What your looking at now is the downgraded version. Still working at it.
I still need to do one last video for lighting. and I think it will be a candle;)
rajasekharan
12-06-06, 03:36 AM
a candle....:)
wow wow wow .....that will be really nice.....in the mean time let me get comfy with my new beauty...:)
ahemmmm, .....er......ummm.....if you dont mind i have a small request here...:o
1.using HDRI in maya
2.mental ray in maya, and how to do "Final gather" correctly...(i always get messay with that).
3.materials...how to bake textures, how to use them, how to use car paint and SSS.
4.cloth in maya...how to do it right...(last time i tried it...the left hand joint was horrible, the right one came correctly though...:)...)
5.animation....???, yes, how to do a walk cycle ... i want to know about the graph editor...though i am not interested in animation.....i like texturing and lighting a lot....
so if u can help me with creating underwater scenes and all...it will be nice...oh ...and where is the sky light in maya?????, its there in max, and i find it really nice... so how to do that thing....?????
eehhhh....i have not given u a huge list ....????has i...????

I am posting this here since I never see a breakdown of maps to what they do to your render.
All map making are covered under my Zbrush 101-104 series but here is a visual representation of what they actually look like being applied one at a time.
I used a final Gather in maya for lighting.

I have bought a new site and it won't be ready for a few because their setting it up for me now.
It has twice the bandwidth and it can be upgraded very easy.
HouseofTutorials has been evaded by terriosts that won't answer emails, I only have a chat window to comunicate with them if you call that communicating.
The site is down for now. And when its back up I will be switching hosts because nobody should do bad business like that.
So admins don't destory this link I will post the updated site here when its up.
long live the freedom of knowledge and good will;)

Wanted to Recap this video for awhile now.
This is super simple to follow. Learned a little more while I was working on the armor parts, (that someday I will finish) lol
Anyway enjoy.

http://www.houseoftutorials.com/page2.html
not bad, thanks for the video.
I use a method I have, but I'll give yours a try.
For the alphaGain on the displacement and normal maps, you can make a expression to auto -/2 your gain vs your offset. It's usefull, makes it so you never have to calculate -/2 of your gain and offset, it does it for you.
I'll made a pic of the explanation.

Hey man,
Enjoyed your videos. Kinda hard to understand once you go to the maps, since I'm not that experienced in Maya. That process seems long, especially waiting an hour for the zmapper map. Do you really need to go through all of that to achieve a skin texture?, because Im sure you can achieve an exact look without the use of a 3d party app.
cannedmushrooms
02-21-07, 01:46 PM
what video?
Zbush 104 ? maps and materials
If so then I would have to say yes there is a way to make skin easyier.
But Sub scattering light into the layers of a object replicating skin. Is fun;)
And it gave me a way of showing the not so common maps in 3d land.
For faster ways you should look at the second life videos or IMVU. They use more of a baking method. I have them seperated by topic so that you can just watch the videos that apply to Zbrush
Baking video is on the last IMVU video
http://www.houseoftutorials.com/page5.html
Baking video 2 is way at the bottom

Can you please make a video on how to combine a mesh if you only have a head. For example, i created the head and now want to attach it to a body that will flow with the topology. I mean i can use the multi marker, but its not effective. I did get decent results with going back to lowest resolution and edge looping things. I would like the simplest way to do this, even in a 3rd party app.
Thank you
cannedmushrooms
03-13-07, 05:16 AM
Playing frankenstein has always been a challenge for the Zartist.
you have 1 option.
1. The head has already been sculpted with all the details probally. But when you make a body all those details will be washed away because you have to merge the edges on the first lvl in order for the topology to smoothly flow.
Its the order of things that are the most flustrating when it come to being a 3d artist. You have to think 12 steps ahead at all times. When all you really want to do is sculpt;)
I would keep the old Zhead export it at lvl 2 or 3 and watch my Maya 11-14 series which walks you through a biped body with good topology.
As far as a video being made sorry I'm retired until Z3 comes out.;)
I have moved on to the traditional art side until then.

03-13-07, 07:31 AM
Thank you.
However I did have some success with going back to a lower level and edge loop things, stretch them down and build a body, then going back to the higher division. My head still had all the details and i would manually add and sculpt the body that was just created Not my favorite way, but thanks for the explanation.

Back from vacation. Took awhile off to study my traditional art skills a little. But as summer is coming around fast it is time to get the ball rolling for newer videos that I can use in next year classes.
So here is a few more videos for your entertainment.
Few new beginning videos that were produced after I used the old ones in the classroom for a year. I was able to see what hardships the students had with the videos and make new ones.
http://www.houseoftutorials.com/page3.html (http://www.houseoftutorials.com/page3.html)
And I am now covering these lessons in a curriculum driven format
located here
http://www.schoolof3d.com/ (http://www.schoolof3d.com/)
You can sign in as a guest to view the classes.
Sometimes it helps to learn things in a certain order this will accomplish that task.
This project will be fully done by the end of summer.
You will also see a little bit of a difference on the site where some videos are free others require a subscription. go to the home page here for complete details.
www.houseoftutorials.com (http://www.houseoftutorials.com/)
on the left there is some completely new categories also
Can’t wait to start learning Z3 ;)
