Thanks folks for all your replies and funny comments.
The inspiration is the gold watch on retirement for an empty life dedicated to self seeking greed. Hence the two vignettes of back handers and back stabbing. The original idea was also going to include scales to measure the value of one's life. I tried this but it threw the composition and became overly complicated.

It's basically my modern take on a "memento mori" ... just need a skull oe two to complete it.
