Hey. I havn't been able to post anything for a while between some odd jobs and procrastination :( This is just a little animation project I am working on. It's a sphynx, a hairless cat. I intend on texturing and rigging it too because his breathe stinks, so I'd like if he could close his mouth :)

Looks great. I have a question about your process. Now that you have these two separate models how will you join them? Will you import a complete base mesh into the animation program and then apply two separate displacement maps to the model for rendering? Thanks,

Thanks for all the nice comments everyone, I'm glad you like it!

troy - the material is the "double pokadot" with the specular turned down to about 4 I believe. The lights are basically default, except I added a slight blue tint to the fill light and adjusted the main light so it shed a little more light on the model. I'll look into making a Zscript too

kaibosh - actually, I just plan on cheating a bit and the neck area will be covered with a little bandana that I've seen people put on their pets :) The reason I didn't sculpt in one piece or just use multi displacements was two fold: I wanted to test a different workflow on each piece, and also because my computer is in rather poor shape

cesar, antropus, and alex - great to hear from you guys, you know how much of a fan i am of your work :)

Sphynx cats have no fur, I think they're awesome though & think of all that hair on the carpet you won't have to vacuum. This image is great BTW...:tu: :tu: :tu:

hi

as an owner of a sphynx & someone whos tried zbrushing one in the past I think your doing a wonderful job here..can't wait to see him/her textured

are you going to add any hair at all?..they do have some very fine hairs covering the body

a minor crit is the bottom cheeks feel a bit tight..almost as though he's sucking his cheeks in

overall though.. awesome work!!

why do make him look so wrinkled though, it almost looks like he is 300 years old or even dead.

Really nicely done. Your modeling is natural. The overall anatony and sense of form looks correct, and your attention to detail, ie, folds, fleshy wrinkles is very nicely done.
This is a modle well worth your effort worty of 5 stars.

Well, thanks again everyone for the comments, I appreciate them all

Seb: I chose this type of cat on purpose so people wouldnt tell me to give him hair! :) Thanks, love your work!

madmac: thanks again man

dragon-g: thats too bad :) I felt indifferent toward the Sphynx before I started this, and now I have a genuine fascination with them. I love the way their skin bunches and stretches

Stefan-Morrell: Thanks! I might add a little hair like the kind that does exist on them, barring any complications I might run into :) I'm going to rework that cheek too, somehow that slipped past me. Good eye!

rt_wolfenstein: I think a lot of it will disappear with the skin shader, though sometimes I like to go a little overboard :) Thanks

Mr Monster: Thanks! I tried to take special care with the different types of wrinkles over the body and head, the stretching and the way the loose skin bunches at certain points. You seem to have a great eye for all that :) Glad you like it

FHawk: Thanks man! by the way I think you should post some of your work, unless I am confusing you with another flying hawk ;)

ncollings: Wow, I can't believe you would remember that old thing! :) Thanks a bunch, and my website might be back up soon too, if I can ever get around to it

Neville: truly an honor to be your top row neighbor! :) I'm glad there seems to be a few of us around here with a sphynx fascination. I had scoured the entire internet and some books amassing every sphynx photo I could find, somehow I missed these two! Thanks, your comments mean a lot, and the pics too

stimpack: haha... I will never be talented nor intelligent enough to out-design nature. Thanks!

antropus: Well, right back at ya ;) Looks like I'll be spending another night crying myself to sleep after seeing your updated Sophia

And now....... I've been a little busy and I havn't been able to start rigging and texturing this poor little cat. In fact I wish I could divide the body again because there are some areas id really love to work on, but it kills my computer at that poly count :( I did jam her head onto her body though if anybody was wondering what she looked like in one piece :) Enjoy this sorta non-update

thats just terrifyingly good. just the head was downright incredible, but that body aswell... you have a insanely good eye for how the skin wraps around the muscles as proven here. the way it sags on the front legs is particularly convincing. pretty hard for the texturing to live up to the modeling quality, but it looks really great from where I'm standing! MEEEOOOW!

BTW: Meant to upload these sphynx images for you a while back, but might be as good as useless given the excellence of your modeling and texturing so far ;)

metric (http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/member.php?u=65048),

Glad to see you continuing on with this piece, and congrats on the well deserved TOP ROW spot!

The coloring is looking very nice at this point. The eyes color looks good, as does the variation in the coloring in the face, and choice of colors for the ears.

I always wanted to get one of these cats! Besides being amazingly interisting, as they seem such a natural handy reference for fleshy wrinkles and the way skin behaves.

Are you dropping him into Projection Master to paint and reworking in Photoshop? Looking good METRIC!!!

I am happy to see you continuing this piece, and to see this latest updated post with the coloring.

BTW. Glad to see your a fan of Jordus', (saw something on your site). I had sushi with him when I was out in LA.

Keep on this one. It will be worth the effort. Your very talented.

Nice texturing, very likely eyes... However I find it very cartoonish in its expression but that's normal and maybe in the color of the ears, I think it might be a bit too bright

Thanks everyone! Now to answer the questions...

seb: thanks man, I'll definitely be painting a spec map, for now I just have the specular turned down a lot because I didn't want it to look too shiny

Bas Mazur: yeah I'll be updating those soon, in fact I havn't really even worked on the mouth or lips yet either.. those are coming :)

Whistler: thanks! hopefully my treatment of the rest of the cat turns out well :)

atwooki: thanks!! I remember you mentioning those pictures but then I never saw them posted. Suprisingly, I had none of those pics already! And I can definitely still use them, they are great. I find myself making adjustments throughout the whole process, even during texturing :)

Mr. Monster: thanks, that means a lot! I am indeed painting it almost entirely in Zbrush using projection master, and occassionally using ZappLink to clone out artifacts in photoshop. oh, and I am very jealous... I'd give my left arm to have sushi with Jordu :) I'll definitely be following through with this project to completion!

rtwolfenstein: haha.. ok I'll admit that I found his 'default' expression rather comical too. When he's rigged he will no longer look so suprised! And you are probably right about his ears. I will be adjusting the SSS skin shader when I paint the other maps for it soon

Hi

Nice Sphinx Cat!
I also did one - checkout the turnaround in my demoreel

Download Quicktime Movie 540x432 (43MB) (http://www.rauschundluxus.roger-provide.net/2006_modeling_reel_maehring.mov) (right click and save target as)

I always use the Zack Petroc approach; working between Maya and ZBrush to create an organised mesh + posing + texturing

Bloody hell!

What an awesome piece of sculpting, and what an inspired choice of subject! I wish I'd thought to do a Sphynx, I've been wanting to do a cat for a while and like you was put off by the fur - Good solution! Now, are there any bald bears or birds??

But then thinking of the subject was one thing, getting the detail right is quite another, and you have done a magnificent job. Love the flesh on the foreleg and the mottled colouring on the face. Beautifully executed! Five big'uns fer sure!

Hi Michael!

Thank you so much for your comendatory words!

This was quite a piece of work... what maybe interesting to you is that I used Zbrush´s AUV-tiles; ... they work very well for color maps but they cause problems with the bump-maps.
Now I have switched to using properly setup Maya UV-layouts. And the new ZBrush Poly-painting function makes this approach much smarter to handle.

Sorry but i have to post something...
Your work is very very good for me. Building a such realistic cat is not so easy (i'm working on it because i've lost my lovely cat in an atrocity way this summer after more than 14 years of exponential and perfect love...)
I'm learning the good way to build a such sculpt and I have to say this is damn hard for me :o. Sphynx(es?) help me a lot to understand the shape of the skull+muscles+skin without 'hair', but... damn! You're work is 5 stars! If you could help me a little bit with a base mesh screenshot or some correct proportions...
I love you're work! thx for sharing it because this is (for me) the best 3D cat I've ever seen on the Internet! (excepted one I won't speak about...:p)
Sry for engrish.
Best regards.
