Hello,

Since I used Zbrush from start to model statue, so I'm gonna post in here .

The orthograph picture in zbrush:
Davidrotate1.jpg

and here are the test renders to make sure I get the correct perspective dissortion (lower res mesh to fast thing up):

The mesh polycount is 750k in zbrush, but somehow it translates into 1.5mil in 3dmax

The model was started from the head and then I used edge loop to expand the mesh. I had to do that because I wasnt going to make full body at first

proggress pic:

maybe I'm gonna texture it a bit before I'm done with it

Hope you like it

Gorgeous David copy! I only think, that his left leg is a bit bended too much. Anyway it's great work.

your work flow is totally crazy !! Had to be hard adding geometry to a high poly model :P 5 stars :]

I think the only thing that gives it away is the hair. Other than that, it's pretty difficult to distinguish it from a photograph!

"to call it great"would be an understatement !...but your base(head) looks so detailed as your steps in the edge-loops expansion ? did you use ZBrush in-between steps ?

hello,

thank you for the complements, I really appreciated it :)

Abyssis - hehe, your the one from cgtalk right? thx :)

slocik - well, I did the edge loops on the lower lv mesh....it's not that hard actually, but if you made mistake than your screwed :P

jantim - actually I used the base head from the one I made a while back, started from natalie then keira, jude law then david. Thats why its quite dense, it even have the mouth hole. I used zspheres to make the head

Jason Belec - The hand? I think that wasnt me :P

Dear Max,
Congratulations on your unbelievable success.
The mesh is a beauty, it is.

Only I miss how you could make it stating from the head downwards.

Could you describe your edge loop technic, please. Oh where I may read it.

With admiration,
Anatom. :D

Great job. Only criticism would be that your head seems longer than the original (from front to back), and your neck is a little shorter too. Things like the muscles between the top of the arm and the shoulder not being as tight are really nit picking.
Sweet, good study.

I think you used editable mesh in max and you got 1.5 mill triangles. if you convert to editable poly you should get 750000 polys.

Looks awesome. I think his Big-Toe on the left foot is a little bit too big, especially in the perspective renders when compared to the original. Thats the only problem I can really spot right now though. I've been meaning to try something like this for a while now, seems like a great practice.

PS. I think the reason it is 750K in Zbrush and 1.5M in Max, is because Zbrush is counting the quads, and Max is counting the triangles.

no words, I think it will take a while to CG history to make a copy better than this. Obviously it's got some flaws, but it's almost perfect, congrats!!

Just stunning, edwin... :tu::tu::tu: a real achievement
You've certainly done Mr. Buonarotti proud here, I'd say :D
Tendons running down from his right superior iliac region look a tad awkward,
but hey, who cares? this is incredible work!!

Very nice indeed - imagine if Mr DaVinci could have used Zbrush? He would be proud of this.

Have you seen this:

http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=35132&highlight=mona+lisa

Maybe we could start a DaVinci Thread? (then again, maybe not...)

Keep it up!

Actually, the David was sculpted by Michelangelo Buonarroti, not Da Vinci. Da Vinci believed sculpture to be an inferior art-form. An Old Master thread would be cool though.

Thanks for correcting me twebb. I should look at the title of the thread now and then, I guess. Great sculpting (both real and Zbrush) anyway.

hello,

well thank so much for the comments and critics guys , now i'm really motivated to finish this one :)

Anatom - hmm, I think there is a thread explaining about box modeling in zbrush, basically it same as extruding polygons. Just try pressing the edge loop button in the geometry roll out, I think you will understand it after that :)

jit_gohil - yeah, ive seen that monalisa...very good indeed :). Maybe its fun to create his other paintings in 3d :)

fx81 - I think they all deserved the win, I dont think I can make something like that without zbrush :P

Dickie - I used mental ray to render

I'm suprised someone mentioned about his toe hehe, good observation :tu:

Fantastic! I just came back from Florence and left David about a day ago. Your work really captures the original. One of the most interesting aspects to seeing the original was how much Michelangalo stuck to the principle of box forms forming the structure underneath everything. I just dumb struck by how much of a cube the bicep was and how simplified all the form was. You have done a great job! Cheers,

Ryan

Hello,

thx for the complements guys :), I really appreciated it.

Here is the latest render:
DavidRender1.jpg

I still need to tweak the model a bit, but I'm currently trying to learn more about rendering, and it takes quite a time ;)

Any comments about the rendering or the model perhaps?

furrykef
06-06-06, 10:24 PM
Only thing about the render that really sticks out to me (I'm no expert by any means) is that I think the highlights need to be turned down a tad and the shadows need to be punched up a little bit more. You can do that by dimming the lighting a tad, and/or by editing the image after rendering, though it probably shouldn't concern you too much until you've settled on how the model should look ;)

Do you use FG / GI for render ? How do you light your model ?

Obviously you learned a lot by copying the old masters, it's awesome! :tu: :tu: :tu:
When I looked on the original photo (and I had a hard time figuring out which one was the photo, the people on it are allmost the only thing that give it away) and your final render, it seemed to me that the original David has just a bit more texture (marble) or grime on it in some places. The render looks very clean and smooth. Maybe Ryan can tell how 'dirty' or smooth the statue was, though he was probably not allowed to touch it!

hello

thank you again for the complement :)

furrykef - thx for pointing that out, that was helpfull :)

-Gopher - yes, I use FG and GI. The lights are photometric lights placed inside a building made similar to the real one.

Plakkie - yeah, I definitly need to texture it, I have couple marble statues at my house to help me out with this one :)

Hi, I'm relativly new to Zbrush so I was wondering how you were able to pose your character? Did you start with zpheres? and if so, did you use x semetry?
Iv'e been trying to create firgurs in kneeling or fighting poses but I don't want to turn of X semetry and try and copy myself on each sire. Do I have too?

CalicoWishes
12-03-06, 04:28 PM
thrive, I am wondering the same thing, because I loaded a premade model into zbrush and I didnt even know how to adjust and model the arms, legs, and the models position and everything, so I am wondering how it works as well.
