ZBrush 2 Practical Guide

ZBrush 2 is a huge leap forward in speed, performance and technology. Modeling, texturing and painting features have all benefitted from unprecedented code enhancements. New tools and options provide even more versatility in all areas, boosting the artist's productivity and streamlining workflow in surprising ways.

To help you get on the fast track toward mastering Z2, we have created the ZBrush 2 Practical Guide.

The Practical Guide is comprised of nearly 500 pages of tutorials. Introductory tutorials teach the ZBrush 2 interface, including such topics as the new curve controls and creating a startup document.

These tutorials are followed by increasingly advanced walkthroughs which teach the concepts of 2.5D painting, creating complex shapes from primitives, ZSphere mesh insertions, crease features, and the creation and use of displacement and normal maps.

For artists using ZBrush 2 in a production setting, tutorials have been provided for integrating Z2-generated models and maps with many leading animation packages.

Most tutorials are written as projects, making it easy to learn techniques by applying them as you go. All are laid out in a clear, step-by-step fashion with an explanation for why each step is performed. You can skim just the steps, or take time to read the more detailed texts that follow them. Icons are also provided to help draw attention to features that are new in Z2. In short, the Practical Guide has been carefully and attractively laid out to present an abundance of information in a clear, concise manner.

http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/uploaded_from_zbc/200404/user_image-1081566411ixk.gif

Many of Z2's beta testers have also contributed tutorials. We'd like to express our thanks to them for providing expert advice, information and images. Above are a few of the many images included in the Practical Guide.

The Practical Guide supplements the online help which is built into Z2. Some of the tutorials mirror ZScripts that are built into ZBrush 2, providing a way for you to see the tutorial in action as well as read it and follow the steps yourself. Reference material about the various features used in the tutorials is also available in Z2 simply by holding down the Ctrl key and moving your cursor over interface items. The Practical Guide therefore integrates with ZBrush 2 itself to form an integrated suite of learning features.

Well I have purchased quite a few 3d graphic packages in my time but I have never had the great service that I have received from the guys at Pixologic. Not only have I received a completely free upgrade that most would die for, I have just downloaded the new guide and it is very informative and just what I needed to continue improving.
This guide along with this great community makes owning ZBrush so much fun.
Thanks Matthew n Team and you guys in this forum for making it so interesting to read each day.

I'd like to add my thanks as well! As good of a learning tool as the ZScripts are, I still prefer walkthrough tutorials. I'm working on printing the guide out now, and from what I've read and worked through so far (up to the Rusted Golden Idol) I am throughly impressed.

Thumbs Up!!

Thanks for putting the time and effort into this document (and for adding those handy margins for taking notes!)

Any chance this file could be made available elsewhere? Some of us (me) are on are still on crappy old 56k modems and downloading 22mb files is rife for trouble - and the current download method doesn't allow me to use GetRight.... :(

great manual guys.
i had only one problem with it - i was trying to print it, but because the pages aren't centered, when you print on bith sides of the page each side is aligned diferently.
if you could just center all the pages and make it "printer friendly" it would be perfect.

once again - great job .look like it's going to be my prefered app in the near future.

Is there a possibility of getting it set up in an online POD service such as Cafepress so we could order a bound copy for our reference. Love the pdf format, but I work much better sometimes with the book sitting next to me and my computer open to the program without switching back and forth. printing would be fine, but that is a lot of pages. www.Cafepress.com (http://www.Cafepress.com) has a free setup and such. Just curious if this was a possibility. Thanks again.
www.ondemandmanuals.com (http://www.ondemandmanuals.com) is another option for this same type of service.

Hey dfaris! im a c4d user too.Talk about frustrated.great app.Awesomely clean and stable, but the germans are neglecting the N.Americans(no english anything), except 1 descent book and another bad one.Tons of stuff in German. And they know we need it but dont care.Compare this to Z. The Z people care about their users.Yes C4d has a big manual and lots of online tuts that dont addreess real needs. Maxon gets 5 thumbs down.good program no support. Thanks be to Z for being different.WO! I cant believe it.The issue of different learning styles is addressed.i think this is unprecedented in American history. For once we are recognized as having different methods of learning.Im going to cry.joyeeeeee! :tu:

This is an excellent manual, and far exceeds anything that has gone before it! Well done.
I especially liked the Poser 5 stuff at the back - really nice touch.

I'd just like to point a few things that could improve this even further (hope you don't mind - I'm a tech author).

Page numbering and section numbering.
Headers and footers on each page.
An index at the back.
The open options of the PDF could be set to 'Fit in Window'.

All of these would be useful for those of us who wish to print out the manual.
Anyway, keep going - this is one of the coolest user guides I've seen for a long time!

Well I finally got around to downloading the pdf last night and it's fanastic - on white and easy for printing too - yipee.

I'm going to sound churlish here but I wish that selecting text and graphics had not been protected as I wished to add new and key points of useful information pertinent to V2 into my database.

Would you perhaps consider enabling this specific functionality?

This manual is wonderful! I can't seem to follow something on the computer and switch back to the program so I printed the whole thing out.. all 503 pages. Put the pages in plastic protectors and the whole manual fits nicely into 3 extra large binders. Now I can just open the binder and follow along without having to switch back & forth and forget half of what I am supposed to do... lol!~ I highly recommend printing it out.

:D

My guess is that the new Pixolator movie they put up is hogging all the available bandwidth. This seems to be the hot download at the moment, and maybe it's even possible Pixologic was caught off guard by the level of interest it's generated (a good thing in my book).

Found a bit of a glitch in the Practical Manual:

On the third page of the "Telephone Part 3" tutorial, where it describes the second option for recovering the "original, unmodified mesh", it says:

"Press Load Tool and load the phone2.ztl model."

and

"By loading the original model back into subdivision level 1, the level is replaced by the original geometry."

This doesn't work. The original mesh must instead be "Imported", and since Import will not work with a .ztl file, it must first be converted to an .obj. Once this was done, the remainder of the tutorial worked as described.

Has anyone (Pixologic included) thought about having this printed properly through someone like Cafepress.com. One of the A:M users got permission to do exactly that with the A:M manuals and people do buy.

His is 226 pages and perfect bound and costs $23.78. SO fairly cheap as well.

It means no extra cost for the Zbrush folks but would enable those who would like this printed properly a way to get it.

Cheers

aurick
07-11-04, 11:11 AM
This question has been asked many times in this thread already. The most likely problem is that you have disabled cookies, which ZBrushCentral needs in order to be able to remember that you've logged in.

You might also find that you need to disable your firewall and/or antivirus software.

If you continue to have difficulties, we need more information. What browser are you using (including version number)?

First, please post in the proper forum.

Second, please post in the proper thread. It doesn't matter that a thread is long; posting in it moves it back to the top of the forum list and people know that someone has asked a question. Links are provided to take the viewer to the last post in the thread or the last page of it, so there is no reason people won't be able to find your post.

Lastly, what browser are you using? We need to know the name and version number. Also, are you trying to download the guide with a third party download program, instead of with your browser?

I hope I can make a good enough presentation to the company that they will hire me. It's a PDF

By the way, someone was mentioning this can be professionally printed for about 20 bucks? That must be for a large quantity or something, because Kinkos was going to charge me closer to $500 to print it off in color...I did it in B&W for $40...

You are most likely downloading the HTML page housing the guide, rather than the guide itself. Simply click the download link. A popup should appear that lets you specify where you wish to save the guide to.

DO NOT use any third party download programs. You must use your browser.

After a friend told me about zbrush about a week ago I have been caught in a rethink of the whole 3d process. I must say after this free manual, the accessible pricing of zbrush and its amazing ability to function on all sorts of computer set ups, (even on a 1999 G4 mac!)I am left stund. For the first time I am actually learning the program before I jump into it. The other 3d packages are so immense that one got easily caught up in all the detail. Which of course mean't buying more supplementary learning material and investing huge amounts of time trying to understand the programs specific language. Buying massive graphic cards massive processors etc.

Sorry if this sounds like an advert but zbrush seems to be a whole different approach to 3d and the sales of 3d programs. It suits the individual artist aswell as the company of artists. Is this a real evolutionary step for the individual artist who was left behind from the visuals war of late?

Now to buy paper.

Thank you for the manual.

I just have to say that it seems to me that an index at the end of the practical guide might have been something to think about, like most of the rest of the educational books created in the free world. Nice.

Blaine91555
03-10-06, 01:26 PM
stepanhajek - There is more help and tutorials available on this site and in the FREE guides than any other software I have ever dealt with. It is nearly impossible to find a question for which there is not an answer either in the guides or on this site. As I understand it this guide is mostly contributions by ZBrush users and the way to get a glossary would be for someone to compile it and donate it to the community. Maybe you have the time? The help file in the program covers most things and combined with everything else available you would never have to buy any learning materials as you do with other less powerfull and more expensive software. Happy ZBrushing.

stefanhajek
03-10-06, 01:31 PM
 Well, the practical guide that I received with the software in book form is the same as the one here. Considering the $400+ I paid for the software, I don't think an index is a bad request. The forum is great, yes. As far my compiling info and creating an index for the book, haven't I spent enough resources in earning the cash to purchase? Just saying.

mikala
03-10-06, 05:36 PM
Be happy you got a manual in printed form.
I bought and paid for many more expensive software packages with just a stinking PDF manual.
This is definitely a step up.

03-15-06, 11:01 AM
Well, apparently, my original intent of suggesting an index for the manual was lost in a sea of Yay Zbrush Central! So, have fun sifting through the forum to find your answers. I had hoped to possibly influence someone on the actual software development side to just elaborate on the main guide, but it seems everyone else is completely happy reading posts. Enough said then.

acmepixel
03-15-06, 11:21 AM
stefanhajek, I understand your sentiment. I think that there is no index because there is no manual....Yet. But a reference manual would indeed be nice. Maybe there will be one after v.2.5 is released?

Maybe the moderator could build a Feature/Command reference index here on the forum in the resource area.

But for those of us who like to read reference manuals, we just have to get used to the built-in help, the quicklinks here on the forum and the practical guide. (which is really just a tutorial manual). At least for now. ;)

stefanhajek
03-15-06, 11:29 AM
Well, I guess I just misunderstood in thinking that since the Practical Guide came bundled with the software that it was considered to be the User's Manual for the most part. I guess I should be patient in knowing that this software is somewhat in its infancy and that somewhere down the line everything will be developed further, including an official user's manual. I am impressed with ZBrush Central and its dedicated members. I'm sure there's only good things to come.

it totaly depends on computer knowlege that you already posses and how good you ar with them.
also it depends on your free time and your learning speed.

i think its not that hard to learn for someone that is realy realy realy into computers and has a some sort of artistic background

wel it works like this mind be kind of weired to you.

oke when you draw a model onto your screen this is considerd a tool when you edit the tool every thing is oke but when you stop edeting it it turns from pollys into pixols
what is a Pixol ? a Pixol is practicly the same thing as a pixel the only difrense is that a pixel contains X Y information but a pixol also contains Z information.
what dose that mean ?? that means that you can stil paint on it like it has depth or you can still change the lightning on that model.
this is all for artist that use only Zbrush and dont use an external aplication or people that want to show there model to there bos by doing some painting on the model first because its faster.

so you see you cant reselect your model but that dosnt mean its lost.
when this hapends just press ctrl+N and you wil clear the carnvas.
after that go to the Tool selector or Tool menu its on the left side of Zbrush.
and select your model again and draw it on the carnvas then go back into edit mode by pressing T and you can again work on your model.

if you want to save your model dont save the document
the Document only save the Pixols not the Tools so when saving go to the tool menu and pres save Tool.

me myself i never use the Zbrush renderer i only use external aplications so i never ever save a document only the tool.

Rezidue_UK
07-03-06, 12:00 AM
thanks man that helped alot i understand now, when i change a tool or save and load project it takes a snapshot, so i gotta save the tool and reload to edit, right? nice one man ive just finished my first ever model by following the practical guide posted on this website, its amazingly easy to follow, big thanks to the author/s thanks man!

i cant open file, wanted a password? This has come up many times within this thread. In fact, look just two posts above yours! You need to use Acrobat Reader to open the file. Anything else, and it thinks you're trying to edit it, which then requires a password.

Hello, first off, great tutorial. This should ship with the program! I was experiencing sensory overload facing ZBrush's interface before I started following along with your guide.

I do have a couple of questions, however. I'm up to the point where I am building the scimitar, and I'm a bit confused by some of the directions. You jump directly into some usage of ZSpheres that haven't been covered yet, such as on page 214 where you mention moving scaling and rotating ZSpheres.. I tried to rotate the bead, and it would only spin along one axis (and not the one I wanted).

A bit later, on pages 216/217, I get completely lost in the area that describes the connector mesh. I get up to the point where I delete the second copy of the hilt-helix, but that just gets me something that looks like the single helix connection (i.e. it tapers to a point before connecting). I don't understand what is meant by the directions "Now move the ZSphere forming the end of the connecting mesh up into the large ZSphere." Which ZSphere forms the end of the connecting mesh?

If you (or anyone) could explain this in a bit more detail, it would really help me out! Thanks!

I get a document error when I try to open Chapter1-3.ZBR. I get a thumbnail view when I select the file but when I press Open I get an error message and then Zbrush crashes.

Edit: downloaded it again, now it works.

Hello again. I have been following along with the tutorial, and have reached the point where I am adding a material to the head. I was noticing that the results I was getting weren't what I expected, so I went back and made sure that all of my settings were EXACTLY as they were shown in the example, and it still looks weird.

The first is the "preview" render, the second is the "best" render. Again, this is done using the exact settings shown in the tutorial. It ends up looking more like a sloppy toon shaded look, not like the material shown in the example.

I'm going to play around a bit with the settings, and try to learn a bit more about how the materials work, but in the meantime does anyone have any idea what I might be doing wrong?

I used to ahve the same prob... though I never tried it again... the problem is with the light setup.... its actually light which makes it look good or bad and you neeed a lot of practice with it....

Greetings everyone ...

am going page by page as suggested in the guide and am currently working on the idol now ..

I have stalled out on page 85 at the instruction line as follows:

The next step is to adjust the material properites to look more like rusted metal.....

use the settings shoen to the right ...

when i cross over "materials" and i look at the dropdown box i have only

.................................................. ................................................
Modifiers
[S1] <checked>
[render] black
[curser] greyed

.................................................. ................................................

i dont see anything to adjust like it shows on the page and i can press on the [S1] key but nothing happens ...

any ideas..

thanks

Make sure that you have the correct material selected, as specified on the previous page. Different materials have different modifiers.
