Congratulations to DM for posting his 1,000th+ message here at ZBrushCentral!

Interview With David Maguire:

Where do you live?
Ventnor on the south coast of the Isle of Wight, UK

What do you do for work?
Sculpting and other artwork.

What do you do for fun? (besides ZBrushing ;))
Book collecting and reading, walking, or maybe being dragged along the cliffs by my two enthusiastic Bull Terriers. Watch films and TV, or go to the pub for a drink and a chat when time allows..

How old do you tell people you are?
58 going on 16.

What would you like to say on this momentous occasion?
I am glad I didn't have to put stamps on those thousand posts. :D

Tell us about your work with ZBrush…

What first attracted you to ZBrush?
A small article in Computer Arts in October 2000 showing a car by the Saint. I then looked at the gallery on Pixologic's web site and saw Pixolator's and Christian Senn's work along with others. I was new to computer art and computers and even though I found Zbrush so much better to work with than anything else I had tried, I found the transition from conventional sculpting hard going. There were times in those early days I thought of
giving it up, as it seemed too late in life to learn something so different. Chris Senn as Pixologic's support, helped and encouraged me over that period so that I could use ZBrush more effectively

What's your favorite ZBrush feature or tool?
The edit sculpting mode.

What's your favorite thing about working with ZBrush?
The ability to be able to produce an image relatively easily whilst using my favoured art method, sculpting.

What other software do you use, if any?
Paint Shop Pro 7, Painter 5, Vue d'Esprit 4, Poser 4, Amorphium Pro, occasionally Amapi 5 and just started trying the free version of Strata 3D.

What other (non-digital) media do you work in, if any??
For sculpting, clay, epoxy putty's, fimo, plasticene mixed with beeswax. For pictures I use pastels, colour pencils, sometimes oil paints very occasionally watercolour.

What's your favorite genre, theme, or style of artwork?
I have no particular genre as a favourite; I love any detailed work done in a representational style as I can admire the skill and craftsmanship that has gone into it.

What are your main sources of inspiration?
Many and varied.

Which artists have influenced you? (ZBrush and/or non-ZBrush)
Again many and apart from Dali who I like, generally representational. This does include the fantasy art of artist's like Boris Vallejo. On Z artists I again find influence from the most professional Z artist to
the ideas of newbies. I always try to consider that to the newbie, who has put considerable effort into their work, their results are awesome to them.

When you create something in ZBrush, how much do you plan in advance, and how much do you let it take shape while you create?
Limited planning, I always get the best results for me if I let it do itself. If I let my conscious mind become too involved it becomes hard work. I believe everybody has some ability whether it is art, music, writing etc
but we should never be conceited about it. I believe the basis for it comes from a greater power than us, all we do is develop it (if we find it), I know there are times when I cannot do anything, because my mind is
consciously too busy.

What are the most important elements in creating a really compelling image?
(theme, subject matter, lighting, colors, etc.)
I would say all of those things and more, but whether it is compelling to anybody other than myself would depend on the viewer's preferences.

What do you hope to convey most in your artwork? (message, humor, esthetic balance, etc.)
I like to do works that convey humour, but as my humour developed over the years from Mad magazine, Monty Python etc I'm sure that many people don't always get it. Occasionally it may be a message, but often its because
somebody wants a particular image or it's just something I want to do.

What is/are your favorite tip(s) for ZBrush newbies?
Don't post just for the sake of having an image on the forum, always feel happy in yourself that it is the best you can do at your present state of development. Though most people will be kind and pick up only the positive
aspects, if you know in your own mind you rushed it, you will not be satisfied that you did your best. I have never been fully satisfied with a finished work of my own, but the point's that could do with improvement are
at a standard that is the best I can reach at that time.

Share with us your favorite ZBrush creation so far (Image and/or ZScript):
My favourite all Z image is Hercules:

http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/zbc_uploads/user_image-1030742129heq.jpg

I liked it because it was at one of those stages where you personally feel you
have past some sticking points

Tell us about the process of making this ZBrush creation.
The figure was produced using just spheres all at maximum divide. The chain was the ring 3D. The background was produced with cubes and cylinders the post work was done in Z

Share with us other facts about yourself…
What's your favorite band, singer, or style of music?
Like art a wide variety of periods, I believe you miss a lot if you get stuck in one era, so I will give a selection that are in my record collection . Rameau, Arne, Monteverdi, Vivaldi, Handel, Mozart, Gilbert and
Sullivan, Rodrigo, Gershwin, Glenn Miller, Perry Como, Doris Day, Dean Martin, Julie London, Elvis Presley, Petula Clark, Screaming Lord Sutch, The Beatles, The Moody Blues, Mike Oldfield, Tangerine Dream, Adam and the Ants.

What's your favorite TV show, movie, actor or director?
TV show Patrick McGoohans late 60s series 'The Prisoner'. Movie Walt Disney's Davy Crockett.

What's your favorite book, magazine or author?
The book I have read a number of times is Dumas, 'The Count of Monte Cristo'. I am also a great Dickens fan. Favourite modern books are Cornwell's Sharp series about the Napoleonic wars. A lot of my book collection is
non-fiction and a some of them are originals printed in the 18th century.

What's your favorite snack food?
Anything

What's a good motto to live by?
Always do what you know to be right however many problems that may give you.

What's your favorite thing about participating in ZBrushCentral?
I think the forum is extremely useful in that it puts people in contact with lots of others with the same interest. In the everyday world I meet a limited number of people involved in art, others might like a picture but are generally not interested in how you produced it.

If the members of ZBrushCentral awarded you a trophy, it would probably Be for "Best / Most _______"
Most money packed bank account, because then I would be rich.

From WingedOne: What ZBrushCentral tutorial/tip has helped you the most?
Many tutorials have helped me, I would find it difficult to pick one.

Finally, write a question we haven't asked. The next 1,000th-message poster will be asked this question…
The art intelligentsia do not look on computer art as proper art, do you
think this will eventually change.

:b3:We would like to thank DM for his contribution to the ZBrush community and for taking the time to answer the above questions. To signify 1,000 messages, the dots beneath his name (each represents 100 posts) have been replaced with a star.

Congratulations DM , and welcome to the 1,000 posts club!
