View Full Version : Portrait of a killer

here is something i've been working on here and there that is finally finished. I had a work in progress of his head posted in here a while back. the head was modeled and textured using Zbrush and I rendered in maya with mental ray and did touchups in photoshop. i've included a small version and the full resolution version of the image as well.
be sure to check out the full res version that is attached, it is a lot more detailed!

Office worker gone postal or a character from Half-Life?
I like the detail put in it.

I think its awesome! Especialy like the suit and the "pieces" and blood on it. Nice job.
He looks like the Hitman but a lot older, very nice :tu:

reminds me of the godfather somehow...

Very Cool Zipp Zopp, I'm glad you've kept this one up. That crowbar looks nasty. :D
mmm brain matter..
top notch, only crit is bring up the saturation a bit.. :tu:
a mix of Hitman & Gordon Freeman.;) good job :tu:

awesome! very nice. the render job is very nice as well. mental ray seems to hate me so im glad it likes you!

Cool beans! Did you use Patrick Stewart as a reference?
if this doesnt get top row pete... then theres definately a conspiracy against you on this forum...

Get 5 stars from me. I do remember that head wip and I keep your images on my hard drive. You deserve top row.
Did you model the suit in Maya too?
04-24-06, 08:03 PM
Very nice work Pete!
04-24-06, 08:43 PM
He reminds me of cpt. Picard from Star Trek.
04-24-06, 09:49 PM
Amazing work like usual Zippzopp, totally beleivable blood. Im staying tuned for more of this guy.
Best of all, and thank you for the renders.
04-25-06, 06:25 AM
This is so me right now... It's scary...
04-26-06, 09:05 AM
thanks for the comments everyone. I'll post the zbrush sculpt and some WIPs with textures later on. and for you ben, a more saturated version without blood and brainmatter.
so he was modeled in zbrush and then i brought the low res head into maya, posed it and brought that back to zbrush for some further sculpting. i modeled his clothing and crowbar and brain splatter in maya. the clothing is all textured with procedurals with blood being added later.
04-26-06, 08:45 PM
aight, for those interested and for ben, i've got a more saturated, earlier version without brain matter. also, images of the maps I used to render and the zbrush sculpt. more on the WIP of just the head can be found here http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=33249
and the images...
the maps are color, bump, backscatter and specular
04-26-06, 09:03 PM
crazy cool! :) This guy is nuts! :)
04-26-06, 09:30 PM
im not sure if im the only one who is clueless on this but........What is a backscatter map? whats its result? i couldnt find a single thread on cgtalk about it
04-26-06, 09:45 PM
it is used in skin shaders. if you were to put a flashlight behind your ears, or put your hand over it, you'll see the glowing reddish tones of flesh due to the light being scattered through the skin and flesh.
so in the skin shader i was using, mental ray's fask skin shader, there are three slots for maps to be used in the scattering calculation. you have the epidermal, which is the top layer of the skin, the subdermal which is below that and the backscatter which is used for getting that reddish glow effect which you can see slightly on my character's ear.
also, the blue specular map is different from most specular maps because of the nature of skin and the way the shader works. if i had used a greyscale specular map, the specular highlights in the render would take on the color of the skin, and the skin would actually look kind of metallic, almost like brass. the highlights would really be brighter more saturated tones of the skin. a lot of renders out of zbrush here on the forums have that effect. so to combat that, the spec map is toned blue so that in the render the specular highlights appear to be more white. have a look at some of the renders here on the forums, you'll see what i mean, or just do a little test yourself and compare.
nice maps petrovsky....! youre my hero

Pretty badass work, this reminds me of a game character i was playing with a whileback, something from hitman.
5 stars from me.
04-26-06, 10:23 PM
Great work indeed.. but it put me off the crisps I was eating.
Great job mate.
04-26-06, 10:27 PM
haha, thanks for the comments guys
yeah, he is quite a bit like hitman, with a little mix of gordon freeman in there with the crowbar and all.
matasorapit : crisps = chips? that right? call me naive i guess, but i never heard of crisps
04-26-06, 10:42 PM
hey do you know nikki makkar or jeff beeland? i see you work for rhythm and hues, awesome studio.
04-26-06, 10:43 PM
where can you get a mental ray fast skin shader? ive been looking for one like crazy.
04-26-06, 11:38 PM
abone114: no, i don't know them. it is a pretty huge company. what do they do at R&H? as for the shader, it comes with mental ray in maya. if you go into hypershade there is a tab right above whre it shows the materials you can make (blinn, lambert etc...) it says Create Maya Nodes.
right click that and choose mental ray nodes, then just open the Materials listing right there and it is in there, it is called misss_fast_skin_maya
04-27-06, 01:50 AM
:tu: wow that is really something else.. how did you made the suit look so real ?
04-27-06, 09:21 AM
the suit was just a matter of tweaking the shader. the suit, shirt and tie were all textured with procedurals and blood was done seperately later on. so the suit was made with the cloth texture plugged into the bump channel. I used several other noise textures on top of that to break it up some. i had also plugged a noise into the color and specular channels to break it up a bit as well. one thing that i made sure to do was make sure that all the UVs for the suit and shirt were evenly laid out. if i had tried to maximize the UV space for certain parts, the procedural would have looked larger or smaller in certain areas because of the change in scale of the UVs.
04-27-06, 09:40 AM
...of a simple driver ?
Cool personnage
04-27-06, 09:52 PM
yeah duh! haha my bad. im a newb when it comes to MR. yeah it is a huge company, just a shot in the dark if you knew them.
i know this is a zbrush forum and not a maya forum but i have a question about the fast skin shader. for some reason my backscatter map has no effect. if i turn off the epidermis, subdermis and spec maps i get a black render instead of a little red behind the ears and other thin parts of the model. do you know what could cause this?
04-28-06, 09:11 AM
most likely you don't have the shader properly set up, and if you do, then the problem is probably with your radius and depth of the each layer. follow this to set the shader up. it'll give you a basic understanding of how to set it up and how it works, then once you have it set up, you can just play with the settings to see what they all do
04-28-06, 10:04 AM
Very well executed (some pun intended). :b3::b3::b3::b3::b3:
04-28-06, 03:41 PM
oh awesome, thanks dude i appreciate it.
04-28-06, 04:52 PM
wow that tut worked great, thanks again man
05-01-06, 10:48 PM
:tu: :tu: :tu: :tu: :tu: why isnt this in the feature section yet. thanks for putting up pics of your process> the eye trick was cool. Not only are you talented, but most generous! thanks pete
awesome zipzop! i like it heaps
Really incredible work! :)
Poor Mr. Freeman :(
05-02-06, 09:45 AM
Whoa Pete, this is friggin' KILLER!!!!!!
I love it, love it, love it.. awesome sculpt & texture. I love the expression, it's angry and psychotic, yet blank all at the same time. Have you thought of making one eye a little more open than the other?? Could add a tad of psychoticness to it!! Great tip on the blue spec map, as well. The only thing that bothers me are the drips on the tip of the crowbar, feel a little painted & droplike. How about a bloodied chunk of scalp stuck to a hair hanging off the end? :)
05-02-06, 12:13 PM
One other thing, I vote this piece into the featured gallery section. This should be added immediately!!
Is it just me or was this piece completely overlooked by moderators.. this thing should have been top row.
:td: :td: :td: :td:

I agree with 'fuf - I give it 5 tacos!!!!!!!
