here is something i've been working on here and there that is finally finished. I had a work in progress of his head posted in here a while back. the head was modeled and textured using Zbrush and I rendered in maya with mental ray and did touchups in photoshop. i've included a small version and the full resolution version of the image as well.

be sure to check out the full res version that is attached, it is a lot more detailed!

thanks for the comments everyone. I'll post the zbrush sculpt and some WIPs with textures later on. and for you ben, a more saturated version without blood and brainmatter.

so he was modeled in zbrush and then i brought the low res head into maya, posed it and brought that back to zbrush for some further sculpting. i modeled his clothing and crowbar and brain splatter in maya. the clothing is all textured with procedurals with blood being added later.

aight, for those interested and for ben, i've got a more saturated, earlier version without brain matter. also, images of the maps I used to render and the zbrush sculpt. more on the WIP of just the head can be found here http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=33249

and the images...

im not sure if im the only one who is clueless on this but........What is a backscatter map? whats its result? i couldnt find a single thread on cgtalk about it

ZippZopp

it is used in skin shaders. if you were to put a flashlight behind your ears, or put your hand over it, you'll see the glowing reddish tones of flesh due to the light being scattered through the skin and flesh.

so in the skin shader i was using, mental ray's fask skin shader, there are three slots for maps to be used in the scattering calculation. you have the epidermal, which is the top layer of the skin, the subdermal which is below that and the backscatter which is used for getting that reddish glow effect which you can see slightly on my character's ear.

also, the blue specular map is different from most specular maps because of the nature of skin and the way the shader works. if i had used a greyscale specular map, the specular highlights in the render would take on the color of the skin, and the skin would actually look kind of metallic, almost like brass. the highlights would really be brighter more saturated tones of the skin. a lot of renders out of zbrush here on the forums have that effect. so to combat that, the spec map is toned blue so that in the render the specular highlights appear to be more white. have a look at some of the renders here on the forums, you'll see what i mean, or just do a little test yourself and compare.

Great work indeed.. but it put me off the crisps I was eating.
Great job mate.

haha, thanks for the comments guys

yeah, he is quite a bit like hitman, with a little mix of gordon freeman in there with the crowbar and all.

matasorapit : crisps = chips? that right? call me naive i guess, but i never heard of crisps

where can you get a mental ray fast skin shader? ive been looking for one like crazy.

ZippZopp
04-26-06, 11:38 PM
abone114: no, i don't know them. it is a pretty huge company. what do they do at R&H? as for the shader, it comes with mental ray in maya. if you go into hypershade there is a tab right above whre it shows the materials you can make (blinn, lambert etc...) it says Create Maya Nodes.

right click that and choose mental ray nodes, then just open the Materials listing right there and it is in there, it is called misss_fast_skin_maya

:tu: wow that is really something else.. how did you made the suit look so real ?

ZippZopp
04-27-06, 09:21 AM
the suit was just a matter of tweaking the shader. the suit, shirt and tie were all textured with procedurals and blood was done seperately later on. so the suit was made with the cloth texture plugged into the bump channel. I used several other noise textures on top of that to break it up some. i had also plugged a noise into the color and specular channels to break it up a bit as well. one thing that i made sure to do was make sure that all the UVs for the suit and shirt were evenly laid out. if i had tried to maximize the UV space for certain parts, the procedural would have looked larger or smaller in certain areas because of the change in scale of the UVs.

yeah duh! haha my bad. im a newb when it comes to MR. yeah it is a huge company, just a shot in the dark if you knew them.

i know this is a zbrush forum and not a maya forum but i have a question about the fast skin shader. for some reason my backscatter map has no effect. if i turn off the epidermis, subdermis and spec maps i get a black render instead of a little red behind the ears and other thin parts of the model. do you know what could cause this?

ZippZopp
04-28-06, 09:11 AM
most likely you don't have the shader properly set up, and if you do, then the problem is probably with your radius and depth of the each layer. follow this to set the shader up. it'll give you a basic understanding of how to set it up and how it works, then once you have it set up, you can just play with the settings to see what they all do

Whoa Pete, this is friggin' KILLER!!!!!!

I love it, love it, love it.. awesome sculpt & texture. I love the expression, it's angry and psychotic, yet blank all at the same time. Have you thought of making one eye a little more open than the other?? Could add a tad of psychoticness to it!! Great tip on the blue spec map, as well. The only thing that bothers me are the drips on the tip of the crowbar, feel a little painted & droplike. How about a bloodied chunk of scalp stuck to a hair hanging off the end? :)
