I've been super busy the last weeks, but fortunatly I have now few time to come back to zbrush fun.
I've been looking the 3 latest starwars recently. In the second episode, there was those wonderfull creatures called Kaminoans.
I found them so atractive I decided to make it the subject of my new work.
Here's my start, tones of tweaking to do.
More pics to come soon. Comments welcome!

Here's an update. I've tweaked the proportions a bit, and started the detailing. Those creatures have very typical eyes, black with strange spotes inside. The textuting and material painting will add a lot...

I have actually never noticed these guys in Star Wars, but then again I've only seen the movies a couple times :p I really like the character you have put into them though, especially the delicate touch you have given to the nostrils. I don't think these aliens would hurt me (or probe me) :) Great work as usual!

Hey Industry!
For now I'll just focus on the head, but after seeing the armors, your right, I should have done it too!
But even after finishing this one, I have another plan in mind...
My aim on this work is to try to make people feel the same sansations I have at looking this superb creature portrait...
Tough work...
this is looking great, are you going to model the entire character with the metal vest and clothes and all that ?

The style is greate ! I like it !
Maybe the neck and some areas are a bit too "sharp", too "rough";)
Anyway this creature is looking greate so far;)

Hi Seb,
I like mucho the "nose"-detail and fine modeling work under the eyes...

Your right Gopher.. I'll fix the neck line too sharp...
Here's a super fast texturing test (poshoshop color), just to give you an idea of the look with the eyes colors

Very pretty. I think you're really capturing the elegance of the creatures. :) :tu:

I reduced the width of the skull, and added cloth fabic on the neck, and more details on the skin. Its a bit accentuated on this render with a cavity shader and a shiny material, but finally I might make it more flat. The neck sharpness is not fixed yet. I also have to make it bigger, its to thin compared to the volumm of the head...

seb, sorry if you've answered this a million times, but do you start out in zbrush or do you import a low poly model from another program? thanks!
it's looking awesome by the way!

I fell in love with those creatures, too. I remember when seeing them the first time in the cinema. Really great...

The base mash was done in maya, but it could have been done as fast in zbrush, because is a simple box with edgeloop on the neck...

This is turning out to be quite outstanding, I have to admit that my system that I use could never give me this kind of detail. Like I see all the time you guys must have some pc set up to produce this kind of stuff. Carnt wait to see the finnished piece. :)
Very cool, how did you get the eyeballs perfectly spherical?

Its turning a pretty good way Voddo, nice to see you too by the way.
We have not finish to hear from each others considering the saml size of the CG univers, and thx for the comments!
even without the texture i am already getting that feeling of this character
also the details are looking pretty neat
what kind of polycount do you have at your current sub-d level ?
Sebcesoir
04-09-06, 10:29 PM
Here's an advanced render. The neck has been tweaked, added few skin details.
The texures is very advanced, so are the materials ad the light setup.
Zbrush rendering, compositing on background in photoshop.
Fx81, The base mesh is 244 quads (I remove one quad band on the unused part of the neck base), and at level 7, its nearly 1M.
The spherical eye (not really spherical after all my touchup), were done by projecting a sphere on the model.

Hi, how did you render the eyes like this in Zb  ?
That's going to be great ;)
Beautiful work, Id be curious to know how you did the eyes as well. I assume outside of ZB.
Nice work. Always look forward to seeing your work.
Its such a simple shape but so nicely done!
Hi, how did you render the eyes like this in Zb  ?Just increase enviroment reflection in the materials pallette, you can also add you own images to the reflection quite easily...
But I'm not sure this is a ZBrush render to be honest, if it is then you da man Seb...

...fantastic work, these characters were my favorate of the new star wars film. top stuff.
Sebcesoir
04-10-06, 04:59 PM
Like I said above the pic, except the background shadow, its 100% zbrush render.
The eyes is the chrome material. I tweaked it to be more sensitive to the diffuse color (black), and changed the reflected map too.
The rendering time is pretty long considering the amound of light (4) and the number of rays...

I'm mostly done. Here's the small jewel attached at the neck. I just have to finish the headlace, and tweak the texture.

To be honest, the previous ones did not really touch me a lot. But the last render is alive! Specially the env reflection makes it look so real. Excellent!!!
Any way to make the eyes look a bit moist?

Lemmo, then final render of the picture will add a lot of the chreature elegance I think. Almost the white spotes inside the eye, they totally change its looking...

Trad : Hi Seb, great comp on photoshop and nice use of mat for the eyes. Maybe add some transparency for veins (teint blue). Keep it up a great progress work, CU soon.

Impressive control at every stage. Thanks for showing how far you can push a render-- the eyes and skin just kept getting tighter!
BTW, I had an emotional reaction to the latest image, of petting a goat's forehead at the zoo when I was seven! eeerie. LOL--I've met this Kam!

amazing work friend, as always !
I see that you model the eyes in the head from the beginning. what do you do when you are in the other sw 3d that you usually use? do you redo the eyes with another shader?
see ya and congrats for the amazing work :tu:

ACtually I love to do full pics in zbrush, even rendering.
If I had to export it into another prograame, I might have done the eyes in a sperate piece, in order to be able to close it.

have to congrat on the 1000th for sure!!
been a pleasure for me anyways watching you explore zb and excel in wonderous ways, this project being no exception.
your pursuit of perfection is to be admired, your patience in achieving the same ...even more so.
congrats on another wonderful piece....
i kinda prefer the undecorated version best.....for me ...seems too human to assume an alien would also be so human as to fall prey to vanity.....but am weird and really do love both versions.
I hope to see you posting your 5000th post here....another masterpiece of patience, attention to detail, and mastery of subject for all of us to aspire to....
perhaps by then I shall come close to your first posted efforts! :D
thats indeed a dignified piece of art for post #1000! definitely deserved TR!
gratulation on another masterpiece! :)
You are really a master of perfect light-material balance (besides beeing one of my fav modelers from here), you always breath so much life into your models... combined with your great models, your images always have a fresh feeling of realism.

Sebcesoir, nice work here, no crits. ^_^
By the way, I wanted to ask you something... Since you now have skills that allow you to do virtually every head or bust you want, don't you want to move on more technically difficult projects ? A full body, or maybe an animated piece ?
Bye !

Davlin, at work I do full characters, with gears, pouches, helmets tec...
But it's so much work... I don't have enaugh patience to do it for peronnal projects... Maybe I will find courage for someting special...
Well, in my opinion the best projects you can work on are always the one you choose for yourself, because you can choose stuff that use all of your abilities or offers special challenges.
That kind of things barely happens at work, I think.
By doing only busts, somehow I told myself that you can't go as far as you can, as an artist; and it was a loss that you can not use all the 3D tools ; For instance, the animated test you did with the witch/ Nurenda was really interesting. :)
But don't mind my questions, I was too much curious. ;)
Bye !

Was going though your other threads and found this. Absolutly wonderful. I know you did this quite awhile ago but this is so great I had to comment on it. I thought that these aliens were soooo great in the movie and to see an artist make one just like it is amazing. I love the eyes so much depth and beauty. You really did do them justice with your model, and neat how your model seems to have the gracefulness as they did, it shows in the face. A new fan for along time.

Ahhhhh - I like how you modeled the back of the head and neck - I never was able to find any photo references for the back - so mine has got a lot of "artistic license" lol!
Beautiful render - and I love how those eyes came out - I did my eyes on my Kaminoan with a LOT of Photoshop ;)
Really like the sculping and texturing :tu:
