************ Updated the 14th of June 2004 ************
XYZAdjust2.zip (http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/uploaded_from_zbc/200407/user_file-1087232997dhs.zip)

XYZ Adjust allows you to edit the X, Y and Z resolutions of Zspheres. Normally it is only possible to set the XYZ resolution before a Zsphere is created. With this script you can change the resolution after a zsphere is added. Also Membrane values can be set for individual zspheres.

Key features:

:b1: Hotkey activated. Interface appears below the cursor.
:b1: Adjusting of XYZ resolution while in preview mode.
:b1: Symmetrical editing of XYZ resolutions.
:b1: Select child/parent Zsphere from within Interface.

Basic operation:

:b1: Hover the cursor over a zsphere and press 'k' on the keyboard to bring up the interface.
:b1: Adjust seperate X, Y and Z resolutions using the -/+ buttons.
:b1: Set all axis' to the same value using the XYZ to buttons.
:b1: Select the child/parent of the current zsphere by pressing the <<<< and >>>> buttons.
:b1: Click the MBR bar to set a Membrane value for the selected Zsphere.
:b1: Click the MBR title to reset the Membrane value to 0.
:b1: Press the XYZ adjust title to toggle preview mode.
:b1: When finished press the Spacebar or Return to close the interface.

Tips :

:b1: As long as a zsphere is selected (one of the zspheres is colored red) you can press the hotkey 'k' while the cursor is outside the canvas. This brings up the interface so it does not cover your model. Useful if you use the <<<< and >>>> buttons a lot.
:b1: The XYZ resolution overrides the Ires setting.
:b1: It is not possible to set an axis resolution of (0,1,0). 0 and 1 are effectively treated the same. However the skinning of a (0,0,0) zsphere is different to the skinning of a (1,1,1) zsphere.
:b1: If you adjust an axis of a (0,0,0) zsphere the other axis' automatically change to 1. This is not a bug but how zspheres work.

To install :

:b1: Simply unzip into your /Zscripts directory and load the script using Ctrl+Shift+L. The script is accessed by pressing 'k' on the keyboard (see above).
:b1: Until more info on zscripts is given it is necessary to load XYZ adjust once every Zbrush session.

Suggestions are most welcome. Enjoy.

Thanks for this TVeyes! I like to alter my zsphere XYZ resolution, but more often than not I find I need to alter it after I've made a whole chain of zspheres. Now I won't have to redo the entire chain.

Thanks a bunch!

I really wanted this.

One of this days I'm gonna get off my but and learn zscripting.

Thanks, glad you like it. This script is basically the replacement for Zif Edit (http://www.pixolator.com/zbc-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=013294). I wanted to make a not to complicated script to try out some of the new scripting abilities of Zbrush 2.

Kokoro, XYZ adjust is a Zbrush 2 only script. Zif Edit has some issues in Zbrush 2.0 but works fine in 1.55b. Use that instead.

As you can see I removed the Membrane and Twist settings (compared to Zif Edit). If anyone has a need for those settings let me know and I'll try to include it in a future update.

Btw, for any zscripters out there, I will post some info later on how to create a floating panel like in this script and how to add animated buttons. Of course you can also PM me.

Very nice and intuitive script! You have opened my eyes to the possibilities with xyz resolution editing. Now I can add Y res instead of inserting loops. Real cool. Thanks!

Hi TV,
This is a wonderful script for the reason that is is very well implemented .
What i'm dreaming of is a Customizable right click menue. Which can hold zscripts menues and buttons and also that can be changed quickly during work with short cuts or buttons which already exist in the right click menue...or better still a right click menue which updates dynamically based on what your doing...depandant on some conditions ... which exist within zbrush.

Again I want to stress my gratitude for the time you've dedicated to this useful script.

Thanks from
Kircho

Nice! I'll be using this script alot!

The only thing I found that would be nice is if we could still rotate the model around when the interface is open, but that's really just a minor thing.

Can't wait for symetrical editing, a visual cue for child/parent selection, and XYZres editing from preview mode!

Just minor things! Can't wait for the next version!!! :tu:

Thanks TVeyes,(Mark?), for this update! I used Zifedit a lot under 1.55b and I'm glad
it's back. It would be very nice if you could
add Membrane function too. It worked like a
charm.
I like the graphic on the script too! Very
cool! :tu:

Thanks again for the kind comments.

Matvara : I have just been playing around and realised the Membrane setting is still very useful. Especially if Tool : Adaptive Skin : Minimal Skin to Child is enabled. I will add it to the next update though it will be a little tricky as there is no way to add a slider to the note interface I am using. I'll figure something out. Thanks for the comments.

Hey TVeyes,

Intresting sounding script. I'm so new to Zbrush I don't know how it will aid me. Could you possibly post example images of what you use your feature for?

This goes out to all the fine brains that code plug-ins. I see a lot of script tools out there, but have no idea what I'd use them for.

If you can include a visual example of how the script is used and why, inexperienced retards like me could harness your genius.

Thanks sincerly,

Just thinking about the possibility of implementing this as a plug-in, and then it can become a part of the permanent interface, like Projection Master. Hmmmm...

One thing that I just remembered that I was wanting to do when I tried your script...: Tab to the correct child of the parent sphere selected. Not really a big deal, but if it's not too hard to impliment... :D
By the way, nice interface design!

Thanks for the interest.

Added the updated version of XYZ adjust to the start of this thread.

- Symmetrical editing added. Use the Transform : X, Y and Z buttons to control symmetry. Shortcuts are the default 'x', 'y' and 'z' keys.

- You can now select and adjust zspheres from preview mode.

- Visual cue added to preview mode editing. When in preview mode the script tries its best to show the area affected. However in a few cases the preview mesh does not show the polygons created by a given zsphere (seems to occur with Tool: Adaptive Skin : Minimal Skin to Child enabled ).

- Membrane setting added. There is no value displayed, just click the slider until you like what you see. It is possible to get more extreme membrane curvatures than with Tool : Adaptive Skine : Membrane Curvature which goes from 0-100 and is applied to all zspheres. The script uses values from 0 to 200.

As before, if you have any suggestions I would like to hear them.

Curious: I'll try to put together some pictures showing situations where the script can be useful.

FineDay: The Parent/Child button work as advertised. If there are many children to a parent the Child button selects the same child zsphere everytime. The buttons are not intended for full navigation through all zspheres but for quickly selecting the previous/next zsphere on say an arm. You can now start the script from preview mode so just hit the spacebar and select another zsphere with the cursor.

DreamWalker: I might make a version of the script that resides in the zscript window. That would allow you to freely rotate while editing.

Thanks again for the comments.

Hi TV,

Thanks for the update, I'll be testing it later today.

Two comments:

First, if you drop the XYZAdjust files into the \ZBrush2\ZData\ZPlugs sub-directory it will install as part of the ZPlugin Palette and autoload unaided (with all the other scripts) ready to be invoked with the K-key!

Second, while I admire your interface,(It's terrific and I'm curious about how it functions - especially the way you do updates on the entered values...) perhaps it might be more efficient if it worked as a persistent interface down in the lower ZScript window. Why?

First because, down there, it would never obscure the ZSphere/adaptive skin during creation and manupulation - it helps to be able to always see the effect of the adjustment, unobstructed. Also, if the interface were to stay open it would be easier to let the user press the K button over multiple ZSphere-joints during the construction of the ZSphere model.

Just a thought... :)

Thanks for the suggestions Sven. Always appreciated.

Adding compiled zscripts (.zsc) to the Zplugs folder is not advised. I have added a couple before and everything runs fine. But according to Aurick we should not modify the contents of that folder. See here **** The ZData Folder -- Do NOT Customize! **** (http://www.pixolator.com/zbc-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=4&t=001433). The zscripts I have added run fine but I do not want to add to any bug reports by telling people to unpack the script there :)

I am not sure what exactly is needed to write a zscript suitable for Zplugin status. Unique memory block identifiers is a must but I am not sure if normal variable declarations could mess things up?

Try press Ctrl to get info on the Projection Master button. Maybe a specific filename or some variable definition is needed to compile and add a zscript.

Regarding the interface, yes, I was trying to show off ;) It is not the best interface for this kind of zscript. But you can still work with an unobstructed view. If a zsphere is in focus, colored red, you can press 'k' while the cursor is outside the canvas. The interface will appear there.

Thanks again.

Hi TV,

Yes, now I remember seeing that notice... though it seems to be referring to the ZData directory, not the ZPlugs subdirectory.

Since the ZData directory has a bunch of .CFG files in it, it would make sense to keep that directory virgin... but the ZPlugs files is different. Maybe Aurick could give a little more precise guidance here.

I've been dropping all kinds of stuff into ZPlugs with no ill-effects for several weeks now. But if Matt says I'm tampering with "God's plan", I'll put things back the way they were... ;) one problem I see might be conflicting hotkeys. I haven't done anything with Memory because I don't understand that stuff at all. As you say, conflicts might involve variable names, too. Hmm.

Anyway, I tried out revB of XYZAdjust in the Zplugs subdirectory and it seems to work fine. I like the symmetry feature. But I'm still not in complete control of ZSphere construction - gotta work on that some more.

Thanks for the update. you do good work!

I seem to be getting a problem with this script.
If I place a ZSphere on screen then apply symmetry X then place two ZSpheres [eyebrows] then another two [elongated eyebrows] I then use the script to adjust the speres and all works just great. Untill I place another ZSphere between the two previous spheres, [sort of like placing a nose between two eyebrows] and attempt to use the script to adjust it, then I get a major crash with the following message ..

ZScript Note : Input value is out of range
[ZSphereGet,SymetryOn,ZSphere+1]

I Then get the following message ...
ZBrush Executable has encountered a problem and needs to close ...

I have reproduced this problem each time I place ZSpheres as I have described above, I am not sure if I have a problem here or if it is just a minor script problem.

I am running Windows XP Pro on a Pentium 4 running at 3 Ghz with 1 Gb ram and a 128 Mb Nvidia video card. I don't normally get any trouble with ZBrush on this system.

Hope someone can help

2 Questions

1-I have modeled the adaptive skin. After modifying the resolution the skin reverts to what it looked like before it was modeled. Is there a way to maintain the modeling and lower the resolution in specific sections?

2-Is there a setting lower than x=0, y=0, and z=0 ?

3-Is there a zscript to fix too many zspheres in a small area after modeling the skin?

TVeyes
07-07-04, 07:18 PM
Thanks people, glad you like it. The examples are coming soon, as in before 2005

Thanks Willog, I have corrected the error and will post the new version soonish, together with a Zscript Window alternative.

Avmics:
1) You must follow the basic rules of Zsphere adaptive skins. Anything that changes the number of polygons or rearranges their order will reset any modeling you have done. So set up your zsphere object, adjust XYZ resolution and then model detail.

2) No, 0 and 1 are the lowest resolution, they are however skinned differently. 8 is the highest axis resolution of a zsphere.

3) No, again, you cannot add or remove zspheres, or do other things that changes the number of polygons without losing your modeling.

This script has become an indispensable part of my ZSphere-editing process, and I would like to add my voice to those pleading for a modeless version of this script. (Given how much I depend on it, removing a few clicks from each step would save a lot of time.)

I have come across two problems, which I believe are linked to the script, though given my general noobiness, it's possible I am causing them in some other way.

This first image shows an error message I get, followed by a crash of ZBrush, when I attempt to change the XYZ values of a recently added ZSphere. It only seems to happen when I add a single, centered ZSphere to an X-symmetrical model.

http://anvil-studio.com/images/zbrush_xyzadjust2_crash01.jpg

This second image shows the preview skin becoming non-symmetrical in the neck area. My workflow is to add ZSpheres, go into XYZAdjust2, and change the XYZ and membrane values until the preview skin flows well, then exit the script and add more ZSpheres. I noticed this nonsymmetry after trying several different XYZ and membrane values for the ZSpheres in the neck area.

http://anvil-studio.com/images/zbrush_xyzadjust2_asymettery01.jpg

Anyway, great script, and if you need beta testers, please let me know. Thanks.

Here is the corrected zscript. XYZadjustRevB_Corrected.zip (http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/uploaded_from_zbc/200407/user_file-1089463819cos.zip)

If you do not already have the original file from page 1, get that first(for the graphics). Then overwrite the XYZadjust2.zsc file with this one.

DevilBunny: The first problem is corrected in the above file but I am not sure the script is the cause of your second problem. I have a feeling you have an even X, Y or Z resolution for the large zsphere between the shoulders, or possible the one beneath it. I'll do some tests.

The modeless version and a slightly updated window version is just around the corner. Thanks for the offer I might take you up on it.

Btw, I forgot to add a little tip. To get the XYZadjust window out of your work area try moving the cursor quickly to one side right after pressing 'k' to activate the zscript. The slight delay it takes for the window to appear is enough to position the window where you want it.

devilbunny
07-10-04, 07:23 AM
Thanks for the quick response!

I thought for certain I had gotten the most recent version. Doh! Installing the new version did indeed fix the crash error I was getting. And good catch on the nonsymmetrical mesh - the central shoulder ZSphere had an Xres of 2 - incrementing it to 3 fixed the mesh immediately. I hadn't really thought about the even/odd question - I guess if you go from even to odd in a spinal chain, for example, you're asking for trouble.

Also, excellent tip on the cursor flick - it helps a lot when I'm going to be going up and down the ZSphere chain within the script dialog.

Thanks!

Im a noob of sorts, and ive noticed that when im doing a zsphere model project there no way to apply x, y,and z symmetry to individual zspheres while having any of the x, y,and z resolution buttons pressed.Example;
say ive got a figure with two hands , and i want to add 5 fingers to each.If Im on x symmetry and click on a hand the same thing happens to the other hand , but as soon as i press one of the resolution buttons the whole model seems to be affected and not the hand.id like to be able to apply the efect locally to a set of zsheres.Any help with this appreciated.i just want to pull out 5 points on a set of hands for example. Can this tool do this?

Please let me know if that does not work.

Hi,

You are missing the graphic files for the interface. Get the XYZadjust file (http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/uploaded_from_zbc/200407/user_file-1087232997dhs.zip) from the start of this thread and then get the bug fix (http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/attachment.php?attachmentid=3532).

The "freezing" is normal behaviour. When you activate the script it opens a note window below the cursor. You then adjust your values and exit the script by pressing the Spacebar or Enter key.

For anyone on a Mac you need to get the initial file (http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/uploaded_from_zbc/200407/user_file-1087232997dhs.zip) and then the Mac corrected version (http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/attachment.php?attachmentid=3532) as stated earlier. Thanks for this script. I'd like to modify it but you only include a compiled version. Would you mind posting the source? Having to call up a nonmovable window each time I want to edit a sphere is quite annoying.

Here is the corrected zscript. XYZadjustRevB_Corrected.zip (http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/uploaded_from_zbc/200407/user_file-1089463819cos.zip)
I think the original post should be edited to include this fix. I didn't realize I needed to do it and I got the crash that others have mentioned.

Hey TV-Eyes

I just cant' think of it if what ZB2 would be without your feature 'XYZ-Adjust'.

Just one thing: as it happens there is no Interface of that plugin showing up. Just some kinda wired triangles. I always have to reinstall ZB2 to get it working again. Has anybody same experience AND/OR knews the origin of this Prob.?

Thanks for help

"XYZAdjust2.zip (http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/uploaded_from_zbc/200407/user_file-1087232997dhs.zip)

Enjoy."

After you unzip your XYZAdjust2.zip into /Zscripts, replace the 'XYZadjust2.zsc' with the contents of:

Hello:
I try to change only x value but the zscript changes all the same. It is possible to change only one of the values or change each one different from the others?

furrykef
06-18-06, 10:12 PM
If you change the 'x' value from 0 to 1, all the others will also go up from 0 to 1. That's because it's not possible to have a ZSphere with only one or two axes at 0; they must be either all zero or all non-zero. Do the other numbers still go up past 1?

Jason Belec
06-19-06, 04:32 AM
pelonxxx, furrykef, why not just try playin with the script? Make sure you hit the big thingy at the bottom to see your work in Preview. If you hit the big numbers listed 0-8 they all change to match, it's just to make it easy. If you hit the tabs = or - for each axis then only those numbers change. Again, please read through the thread (all threads on the forum are like this) so that you are up to date with everything that has gone before. I also believe the the explanation for the script from the amazing creator is quite instructive.

Others have posted some very detailed used of this script from hands, to feet, to heads, mechanical shapes, everything, throughout the community. Honest, we all started where you are now, and it's all here for every future Zbrush user.

Hello there!! You can put the psd and the zsc files in the ZStartup\ZPlugs directory and after restarting ZBrush it will be available everytime you start it without loading it everytime you want to use, it's going to be already available via de k key, or go to the Zplugin menu under TV Tools, you'll find a button named XYZadjust!! great tool!! :D

TVeyes

Unfortunately no. It is a limitation of how this Zplugin was written. To undo changes you will have to select the zsphere(s) you modified and press 0 next to "XYZto".

If it is critical I can write a quick script that resets all zsphere values. PM me if you need such a script.

Hi, TVEyes.

I have been enjoying your script for some time now. Thanks for all the effort and sharing. Clearly a lot of work was involved. I was curious if you had developed it further, into an updated version? Also, what do you think of the utility 'Moldy Tool 2' ? Jason Welsh uses it in his ZSphere tutorials. Does that work well with your utility or are they basically two ways of getting the same thing?

Thanks!

~S.~

Thanks motolov, SmokeCatcher and SNARK. Glad you find it useful.

SNARK: Yes, I have a couple of new functions for a new version but it has been a while since I last worked on it. I guess most of my time has been spent promising new scripts, without delivering  Without trying to sound like a broken record I do have an XYZadjust 3, among other scripts, close to release. So if you have any particular wishes let me know.

Moldy 2 is an excellent script that collects and accomplishes many things that would otherwise take multiple steps when modeling. I would not compare the two as they serve very different purposes. XYZadjust serves a very specific purpose while Moldy 2 is a general utility to use while modeling. But sure, you can easily use the two scripts in your workflow without problems.

Been trying to get this to work in 3.1, but no joy, the interface doesn't even show up. I was using it in 2.0, but have only now had the opportunity to get back to Zshperes in 3.1 and find I can't live without it. Any idea when you'll be releasing it?

On another note, given just how handy this plugin and others like it are, why aren't they implemented directly into ZBrush 3.1? It seems strange that such fundamental tools and functions should be so reliant on developers releasing and then constantly updating them. When they don't get an opportunity, the whole app suffers!

Thanks again for your scripts to date TVeyes, personally I can't wait for this one to come out.

Hi Sven!

Not a pro in programing, I nonetheless suggest there should be some kinda
influence, produced by particular plugs onto the function of the whole system.
Say, I found out that the SmartDiv button, activating the plugin "Smart proportion subdivision of the model"
, when pressed, shifts the ZB window back to the menue on the start.
But if, on occasion or specially, I activate the button Mask>>Grp of the old Zbrush, to perform the plugin, called "Make polygrop of masked polymesh in Edit mode", then the Subdivision in question works swell.

There is some compatibility in our mess, permiting the final positive result.

Hi,

I am sorry to say that The Man does not know why it works for some people and not for others. As for me XYZ Adjust works but the interface buttons are messed up (no .zmv support in ZBrush 3).

The core functionality of XYZ adjust for ZBrush 3, now called ZSphere Tweaks, is done and I see no reason why I should not post the current version while I finish the special features that put the capital T in ZSphere Tweaks. A couple of people have been testing the plugin and since nobody has reported any bugs (don't you dare !! ;)), here is ZSphere Tweaks. Enjoy.

Thanks to Svengali, Mykyl and Blaine91555 for testing.

Much appreciate the new gizmo for xyz adjust!! Had it now since you put it up and man I gotta say its plugins like yours and others that push zbrush that much further along. I did run into a small snag at the start, when I did extract all into the zplugs folder it actually created another zsphere tweaks folder and put the items into it. goast666, the original version is not functional under Zbrush 3.1. Instead try ZSphere Tweaks (http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showpost.php?p=413028&postcount=109) which is posted a little later in this thread. I know, versions everywhere is a bit messy :) .

Mykyl, no worries. Regarding the next update the additional features and buggy zsphere commands are causing me some grief, so I guess I will just have to come up with some other features :) Any day now.

spaceboy412

UL, until tveyes decides to do something like that you could in the meantime, create a custom palette and move all the buttons into that, then assign that to a hotkey and it will popup at your cursor.

tveyes, a few questions, did you ever finish your full version of this? i previously suggested a feature that Digits had implemented, the rerooting, he also had scripted the copy and pasting of zsphere chains, is this something you could add as well? i think digits is waiting for the SDK, which i don't think will ever be released, so i'm just asking you, hopefully i'm not crossing lines or something. :)

Hi there!

Firstly thanks for the pixologic & community for the Zbrush program & plugins. It`s amasing what you can make with it.
- My question is:
>>>It is possible to controll the zspheres numerically (scale, move, rotate). I am interested to controll individually and in group. It would be nice if I could for example straighten every zspheres in a chain; a part or everyone - the reason: It`s hard to controll with the pen.
>>>Another isue. It is possible to make morphs with zspheres? I could make nice morphs for example a tree growth, (in zsphere modeling state) or morph from one tool to another and then capture on a movie file. I tried with 3ds max but there has to be the same number of vertexes in the different state of morphs. My interest is morphing a complex model in another or grow from it. I made some complex models and I want to morph between the states, and the morph direction is wery important.
>>>I think it could be possible to use zsphere chains to build a moving path and then asign a tool to move along it.
It would be enough if you could direct me to a program, a method, or a weblink what deals with 3D morphs.
Sorry for language mistakes :). I am new to Zbrush so I dont understand scripting. Thanks again!

TVeyes
05-14-08, 10:24 AM
I am glad you like it, thank you for the kind words.

U_L - Unfortunately I could not find a way to put the interface in a floating palette through scripting, but as Spaceboy said, you can arrange the buttons yourself in a custom palette and assign the custom palette a hotkey.

Spaceboy - I have finished a version with some additional features, however, any functionality to modify position, size or root zsphere did not make it. Sorry. There is a nasty bug preventing most of that functionality, which I am sure Marcus has made the relevant people aware of.

AhOld -
1: It is possible to modify zspheres numerically through zscripting, although right now there is a bug preventing this. But straighting a chaing of zspheres is easy to do manually. In edit move mode, click and drag on a zsphere or zsphere link to straighten all the children (note: this will not work on the root zsphere).

2: Morphs can be done by storing a morph target before you change anything and while viewing the zspheres (not the preview). You can then reposition the zspheres, enter preview mode and press Tool > Make Polymesh3D to generate a new tool. Do this for each morph. When done export all morph tools as .OBJ files and you can then use a morph target on a polymesh tool, import .obj files to change the morph and the morph slider to interpolate between morphs. However, the morph direction is not taken into account.

3:I think I know what you mean but I don't think ZBrush would be the ideal application for that. A combination of the above together with 3DSMax is as good as I can imagine right now. It should work as the above method creates morph .objs with equal vertice counts and vertice order.

Hope that helps, if not then perhaps the question & troubleshooting forum can offer more ideas ;)

In order to load the plugin automatically you should unzip the ZsphereTweaks.ZIP file to the Zbrush3/ZStartup/Zplugs folder. Next time you start ZBrush the plugin will be ready.

Hope that helps.

tveyes, unfortunately this plugin is not working as it did in 3.1, with classic adaptive skinning selected it will change the resolutions of the zspheres, however while in preview mode you can no longer see the changes in realtime as they did in 3.1.
also digits awesome zsphere zifclick is having issues as well, it would be great to see some kind of joint plugin from you two.
