Please note: This tutorial uses ZBrush 2.
modWithTexture.jpg
PIXOLOGIC PRESENTS THE NEW ZBRUSH LEARNING SERIES
MODELING WITH YOUR TEXTURE
In the second release of the ZBrush Learning Series you will learn how to use your texture as a starting point for modeling. In this video tutorial you will see how to make the most out of your texture map and how to streamline your modeling and texturing process.
In this video we look at a new approach to modeling medium frequency details. Instead of sculpting your details and fitting your texture map around these details you can use your texture map as a base so that your sculpt and your texture painting are perfectly registered.
Download Movie Here (http://download.pixologic01.com/download.php?f=/ZBC/modeling_with_your_texture.mov.zip) (19 mb)
Quicktime 7 required
Check out the texturing video here (http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=33715&highlight=photo+reference)
Special thanks to Shane Caudle of Epic Games for letting us use the image he created above using the techniques in these videos!
Happy Pixoling!

I am not able to watch the movies in mov format i downloaded from zbrushcentral with the latest quick time player
just play it with media player it wil give some error at first but just press yes and it wil play
Guess I'm doomed... tried everything I know, which is not much. Tried Q-Time and got voice but no picture. Opened with Media Player and nothing happened. Really wierd. But thanks Ryan for putting this up. Maybe I can get it to work someday soon.

I use this technique all the time now. I will post some examples soon.
Tip note:
Use high pass filter in Photoshop over your image. This keeps the bump map level subtle then use blur brush to soften areas to your taste.

Im watching it also, great work fellas. I wonder what some of you will come up with this.

Glad you guys like the movie! :)
ZippZopp - Thanks man, how is R & H?
Heart_of_VVolverine and Wenna - try reinstalling the latest quicktime. I am using h264 compression. That has helped some people before. All our movies are compressed with H264 from Quicktime 7.
Shane Caudle - Thanks again for the use of the image!!! Really great image!! :tu: :tu: :tu:
johnny blaze - Can't wait to see what you come up with. :) Feel free to post in this thread. I would love to see examples of what people can do with this process. Did you try the canvas part before? I found that to be the most exciting part of this whole workflow. If your model is around 4 million polys as my original model was it can make a major difference in the quality of the mask. :)
Best,

Highly watchable and you impart information with such clarity.
Even better you don't sound like you've drunk too much coffee or snorted helium.
Being a backward sort of fellow I'd never even created a mask by using the texture intensity.
Bravo and many thanks for making this fantastic taster available.

Great one Ryan, thanks. I don't understand the ear section, though. You mention a 'morph brush', which appears to revert a selected part of the model, in increments, back towards your stored morph target. Looks brilliant .. but I couldn't quite follow what you were clicking on in the vid. How do you 'brush' morph info onto the model? Grateful for any pointers (couldn't find anything like this in the tut forum). Cheers!

Ryan, this is a really cool technique. Do you need well laid out UV for it to work? ZBrush is full of surprises.
rick
Another excellent tutorial Ryan! Clear facts and well presented! I learnt a LOT from this and I'm looking forward to putting this into action! You should think of putting out a ZBrush DVD!
First rate artwork Shane Caudle!!
The realism is getting so good that this forum will get pretty spooky when the next release of ZBrush rolls around, and (maybe) there's an animation componant that allows the user to animate the head so it talks!
Have you got any more tutorials up your sleave? I've got to admit a skin materials & Rendering tutorial would complete these two videos nicely!!
(this is called "pushing my luck")
I've got to agree with Moochie, that I didn't understand the Morph Brush around the ear part & missed what you clicked on.
Thanks again
Upham :)

I think this requires a really great UV layout for this to work, by the time one spends unwrapping and adjust the UV's you might as easily paint in all those details.

This is a fantastic technique. I tried to clear up bits I did'nt understand in the
troubleshooting forum. I have textured faces before using a similar method
but this video assumes you know what to prepare and how to do it. Most of
this one is easy to follow....its the first 1/4 of no.1 vid that does'nt work for
me , I think because of my preparation with uv's. Great method although
still can't find morph brush.

thanks ryankinqslien for this video tutorial,

Do you have an idea where can i find this sort of thing ?
thanks much !

Izmozer- Try 3D.SK if you need high res images
ryankingslien
04-03-06, 01:08 PM
Wow. Sorry for the delay. :|
metamesh - there is still so much for me to explore, too. :)
andreseloy - are you still having problems?
Moochie - I will probably do a new movie for using the morph brush. All you have to do is store a morph in the tool: morph sub-menu. Do some editing. Then in the Transform palette select the Morph Brush and sculpt away. It will return the mesh to the morph targets shape. :)
monstermaker - I laid out the uvs so that I could use Photoshop for some of the texturing in the first movie: Texturing with Photoreference. For the process in this movie you don't really need to worry about your UVs. It just depends on you having a really solid texture. :)
Upham - there is so much more up my sleave! I just hope to get it all done. I will make a point to get the morph brush part in there. I like the idea of a skin material and rendering tutorial. :)
crossbones - The UV layout doesn't matter for this tutorial. What is important is the texture. Also, it took less than an hour to layout the UVs. Life is getting faster in this department. :)
pride - The morph brush is only visible if you have stored a morph target. Are there questions I can clarify here? :)
Zoetrope - I am sorry your having issues. I'm afraid there is not much I can do to diagnose the problem from here. This video uses the same compression as most of our other videos.
izmozer - as bijarts suggests, 3d.sk is a great place. This texture came from their photos. One thing to look out for is the quality of the photo. Zoom in and make sure that the pore detail is in focus. This process really works best if your texture is as detailed as possible. Some of their photos are alittle out of focus, though, they are an amazing resource. Hats off to the guys! :)
Best,
Ryan

Awesome tutorial, Ryan! Haven't thought of this possiblity yet - Didn't even know that you could take a color map and use that as the base for a mask! This'll help a lot later down the road, thanks again! :)

Thomas - Glad ya like it! The coolest part for me is filling the canvas with the texture and. basically, smoothing it out to a 16 bit mask! Then going in and making it better by using the canvas as a modeling tool! That is just too cool. :)

Currently working with this tutorial as it is awesome ,the only issue im a having is that once in projection master, after applying the image plane for manipulation, im getting the problem of the image plane sometime revolving when im trying to use the MOVE tool, its quit annoying.
Any suggestions on how to lock the image plane orientation so that it doesnt do this.
thanks again for an awesome tutorial!
ryankingslien

salPalacios - increase the geometry resolution of the plane. That will help with the accidental rotation. :)

hm...JPG
this is what i get from making a texture when i spred out the uvs using Uvs Uv sphere
a frend of mine told me to use AUVtiles after i pressed that button but then the UVs wil be projected in litle cubes again witch i dont want.
id like to have uv maps out flat so i can edit better with photoshop
If you want to use a cylindrical map import it (which an obj will do) from your animation package... maya, max or whatever and dont touch the AUV button (or you can use the ZB cylindrical)
I used to be only interested in using 'flat maps' that I could take into PS but AUVs ROCK. I do all my texturing in ZB now.

In cases like this where you will be making different images to be blended together, front, side, back etc, you don't want to use Auv Tiles. In the end you will want to bring those images into Photoshop to blend them together, and this could be a real pain with the auv tiles layout. You want to make your UV's first.
I use Max, and Deep UV to do my UV's. Deep UV's relax function is AWESOME!
I useually .....
1. Map the whole head with cylindrical mapping, putting the seam in the back of the neck go to the top of the forehead. The reason to do the whole head is it to keep the center line verticle during the relax.
2. Then relax the whole thing in Deep UV.
3. Bring this back into Max, and fix any UV problems on one side, the corner of the mouth, eyes, ears etc.
4. Delete the bad half of the head.
5. Mirror the good half, using make copy mode.
6. Select the new half, and apply Unwrap UVW modifier, and go in and flip that head half, and move it off the the other side a bit.
7. Attach bothe side together, and weld up the seem in the middle.
8. Apply a Unwrap UVW modifier, and go in and move the head half that you moved to the side back over and line it up with the original good side. Now weld up the vetrs in the UV seam down the middle of the head.
9. On this guy I actually scalled the whole thing vertically to fit the uv space to give more res to the texture. The UV's are actually stretched, but when your using this image plane projection technique, if fixes all that, but you get more res.
All done, now go Zbrush!

Hi guys,
Firstly, I am new to using zbrush but have been playing around over the last few days with a self portrait. So far I have done a practice version and used Ryan's method and 2 videos for helping me through the texturing.
This is where I am at with my first attempt (practice run).
I still need to add hair but then again its not as if I have much anyway. I still need a little toying with the nose as my REAL nose is a little bent out of shape and hard to get right.
The most interesting thing has been using my own head as a referrence. I have painted many self portraits before using oils but never had the chance to see just how weird my own head is shaped.
Anyway, thanks Ryan.

i think will try this one, if all this people say its great it must be, thanks for think in us
excellent tutorial!!! This is what ive been looking for! Realistic texturing in a short amount of time!!!
Sorry for being late in replying. Yes, even tho QT said there were no updates... I checked the version #--that was it. QT 7 only comes with I-Tunes... sad. But after installing, I was able to get rid of the I-tunes prog. (I just don't like it; I find it useless). But have been working on finding some pics with different views of the same subject. And get side-tracked looking at photos--LOL
Anyway.. wanted to say how much I really loved the movie. Opened my eyes to much! Thanks so much!!!!
wenna
Hmm in using this technique, if I am going to merely texture and use normal mapping rather than displacement mapping, is it a better idea to use a higher AUV ratio for the AUV tiling rather than the recommened ratio of 1 if I use displacemet maps? And will pelt mapping give a good result too?
I'm gonna try phototexture the whole body =]

Hi chaps im new to this forum and new to ZBrush, i was reading about this over the last few days and thought i would try this out but when i resize my document with crop and fill on the image then loading my model into postion and hitting CTL+N and going into projection master n tabbing double sided - drop now when i load image plane and hit edit i get two problems 1. my model already has the texture on it but it's all wierd looking it looks to small and streched? 2. there is no image on the plane so when i move stuff around all im moveing is the blank plane its self? and i carnt access any textures? i dont know maybe im going wrong some were! after all im new to this, but has anyone had this problem ?
You should probably be asking this in the "troubleshooting" section on the main page.
That aside. It sounds like your object has no mapping, to test if it does or not go into tool>texture and press the AUV button at your lowest subdivision. Then try again.
hope to have another tutorial like this with the new zbrush:D

Thanks for this tutorial Ryan, it is really helpful. But i've got one question though. I tried to apply, or should i say, project some photos I have to a mesh, but i just can't do it. I'm sort of new to Zbrush, and i have the 3.0 version. I read a tutorial that explains it, but i just figured out i don't have the tool menu that goes on the left side of the screen, on top of the alpha, and i need to use the plane 3d tool from there. What can i do?

I like the Photoshop high-pass filter and blur idea but won't you still end up with artifacts when imported into Zbrush?
ryankingslien

I like the Photoshop high-pass filter and blur idea but won't you still end up with artifacts when imported into Zbrush?Hey Shawn, I can't remember the entire movie but I did this workflow again just two days ago and its featured by Paul Fedor in Ballistic's Creative Essence book The Face.
The key to removing the jpeg artifacting is to use ZBrush's canvas as a go between. Just set Alpha: Blur to 2 or something low like that. Then grab the canvas again by pressing Alpha: Grab Doc.
Note, this workflow was created several years ago. Cameras today, larger texture maps and the use of RAW can minimize the artifacting created. However, Polygon limits are still an issue until HD Geo can be exported to other 3D apps.
