I know Pixolator stated there will be challenges in the future and what those will encompass I could only guess at. But I thought it would be cool to get the ball rolling. So here is a challenge from me to you. You all know that I have been preaching on the advantages of using low-poly adaptive skins so here is the challenge.

The theme is "Mind's Eye". That is all you will be told. Come up with an original and creative concept from this title. It can be anything as long as the image has some bearing or meaning with the title "Mind's Eye". You must do the following:

For 1.5 users:
:b4:You must use an adaptive skin.
:b4:You must post images of the work in progress preferably with snapshots of the object in Polyframe mode.
:b4:You may divide the mesh as much as you wish as you work on it but you must start with a low-poly adaptive skin.
:b4:You must do a complete scene. If you focus on a character please attempt to create an environment for the character as well etc.
:b4:The deadline is October 18th.
:b4:That's all!

For 1.23 demo users you too may enter the challenge.

:b4:You must create your images from a low poly object (3d sphere, 3d cube, etc) and provide snapshots of the work in progress (particularly of the first few low-poly stages).
:b4:You may divide the mesh as much as you wish as you work on it but you must start with a low-poly 3d object.
:b4:Other than that all the rules for the regular users apply to you.

If you feel you can provide scripts of the work in progress then please do but you are not required to do so. There will be no prizes other than the satisfaction of a job well done. We as a forum will be asked to vote for the winners....1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. I will create a digital winner's certificate of achievement for each of the winners.

Concerning the voting process....as this will be a Democratic vote...i.e. the person with the majority vote wins...let us try to remain objective. This is not a popularity contest. It is an artistic endeavor. Hopefully it will provide inspiration for each of us to excel!

What say you? Let's do it!!

:b4: Due to numerous requests the deadline has been extended to Nov 3rd. :b4:

I'm in...will you clarify another point? If I decide not to do a low poly adaptive skin, but rather start from a low poly sphere, what constitutes "low-poly" as a starting count for the sphere, cube, etc?

be patient friend ... we have till october 18th :)

Well Brian the gist of this challenge is to use a low poly adaptive skin as a start. Not a low poly 3d tool. That option is only available to 1.23 demo users. :)

Hi Mentat
Can I translate "Mind's eye" by Imagination ?

I'm in if I can find some time the next 2 weeks.

By all means Frenchy interpret it as you like. :)

Cool idea. Here's another: An Idea (http://www.pixolator.com/zbc-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=5&t=000702)

Maybe now that you have suggested it, people might be interested.

As for the current challenge, I'm glad you clarified the intent. This is a test of our skills working with a low-poly adaptive skin. The low-poly sphere option is provided so that the 1.23 users can participate. Thanks!

the adaptive skin wouldn't be hard its a simple shape as of 2 z sphere but if you want me to do one in ver 1.5.1 let me know ;)

I've been working with low-poly and have only got a little ways into it. It definitely takes patience! So this will be a real challenge.. which I accept! :)

Questions:
Can I use other Ztools in the image as long as the main subject is low poly adaptive?
It will be very hard to do a complete image without using other Ztools.
When you say Low Poly adaptive does this mean level 1 resolution or can I do a level 2,3 or 4 resolution adaptive skin?
Best regards,
Michael

Level 1 seems a bit low to me , Level 2 should do the trick I think.
And I think we can use other Ztools like Eyes.

Mentat7
09-30-02, 12:54 PM
Yes you may use other ZTools as long as the main subject is created from an adaptive skin. You may use any setting 1 to 4 for the skin and of course you may divide the mesh as needed while modeling. The point of this challenge is to use the adaptive skin to create your object...with as few polys as possible while maintaining a high level of detail as well. Efficient modeling! That's the key!

Now with the displacement mapping..how is this challange going to change?
Is it going to change?
Sorry for the ignorance but I am not to sure how it might apply.

PusGhetty

Cool!!! I find working with adaptive skins to be very puzzling and rewarding... That is what makes me love using them so much! Yes, I agree with you that efficiency is the key! IMHO the high poly uniform skins make better five finger hands, toes and other details but are way too big in filesize to be feasable, especially outside of Zbrush!
Thanks for the quick reply!
Michael

Mentat7

Well Michael I don't really know if Displacement mapping will come into play as I don't know when the bonus will become available. So for the sake of argument I will make this decision: THIS challenge will use only what is available in 1.51 and WILL NOT partake of the bonus release features. We will have a challenge utilizing the bonus release later when everyone is comfortable with the new features.

Okay cool...*wipes forehead*
I still need to tackle learning 1.5 first.
Thanks Mentat!

Okay, this is my attempt at this Challenge. I think I've covered all the rules. No postwork except for putting the stages in the main pic.

Oh boy! I would love to take your challenge but Unless a miracle happens in the next few days, I doubt that my skills in modelling are up to it. You guys are all so good!!

But I will be an eager spectator!!

looking great Deb..you know I like a woman in chains...that way I can make sure they will go to the kitchen and make me some pie :) j/k...lovely and mysterious pic...

Lon, looks like your image is coming along nicely as well, cant wait to see its progression

I changed my mind! Just because I can't model worth a doodle, doesn't mean I can't do something!! RIGHT?? So I got off my pity pot and decided to contribute to the challenge anyways!

So I went with what I know. I have modelled a neuron (don't have to be too articulate) and you can see it here in it's original zshpere form, and in it's adaptive skin.

And here is the finished product.. All zbrush!!

It is called (of course) "My Mind's Eye"
