The head was made out of a few simple Zspheres into a low res mesh. The shapes and detail were built up that way.

I also played with the smoothing amount to keep some sharper edges. I had always set this all the way to 1, but .3 to .5 smoothed most of the mesh while keeping some nice ridges. Always new things to learn. (This smoothing isn't the deformer type)
Excellent as usual :ex: Thanks for sharing the image and the tips. :tu: :tu: :tu: :tu: :tu:

Ah the magic of ZSpheres, combined with the magic of Ken The B!! :D
I love the texture, and this method of developing a complex looking model from a low poly mesh, and you really do it smoothly!
Fantastic coloring and lighting combo as well!
Thanx for another treat!

Whew! That dude is bad news! Excellent work as usual. You know you are of course making it very difficult to coming even close to catching up!
The attention to detail is amazing!
How long does it usually take you to do something like this?

Nice stuff Ken. What type of skinning (adaptive, etc...)did you use, and what were the settings for it? I have made a model, and can't seem to get the right skin for both smooth edges and sharper ones. It ends up either too blocky or too baloon-like. Also, did you do sub-d work in another app or all in ZBrush?
Thanks
The skin really is cool looking. I keep forgetting you wrote a Dinosaur book which explains the great texturing you are always doing so proficiently.

Here is a basic rundown on how I do textures like this. I prefer to make my own alpha shapes.
1. a bunch of spheres are drawn on the screen. The MRGBZ Grabber tool is used (shaded, autocrop, off) is used to capture the shape. Just grab a little beyond the texture.
2. This is the alpha that was generated from step 1
3. The alpha is used in conjunction with the drag rectangle and drag dot stroke type to place the texture around the model.
You usually don't want the same repeating pattern all over the model. Make several of these simple alphas. Also, Rotate the alpha while working it to get variety. Hand tooling over areas can help break up any visible patterns.
This lizard head took about a day to create.
You don't really need 1.5 to make a head like this. The zspheres did help get the shape there a little quicker, but a standard sphere can be coaxed into a similar shape too.
The zsphere skinning method was adaptive with a density of 2. detail was added with the Divide function. It takes some playing around with the geometry to get the balance for the subdivision smoothing tolerance (SMOOTH slider) to get sharp edges and smooth areas. Some edges can be softened in 2.5D mode with the blur brush (Zadd on)
Thanks for the tips Ken. :)

Ken, that is amazingly realistic - then to learn you did it with ZSpheres...! I am truly in awe of your talent. :tu: :tu: :tu:
Many thanks too for the insight into your technique.
