Hi all, i'd like to know how to connect the displacement with the maya software renderer, not the mental ray or the Renderman, because on the user guide and online tutorial, its only with Mental Ray and Renderman, which is not what i want!!!
If there is a tutorial online, i'd like to have the link, if not, could anyone make me one...
Thanks to you all!!!!

select the object
graph it's material in teh hypershade
in the shading group node (the left most tab at the top of the attribute editor) for the material you will see slots for the surface material (lambert, blinn ect.0 volume material and displacement material, map a file node to the displacement and source your displacement map.
thne in the shape nod of the object open up the displacement map section make sure feature displacement is on and click calculate bounding box (go get a coffee)
good luck with displacements and maya's default renderer, it's possible but not easy to get good results, mental ray is much better at displacing..
cheers sorry for the quickly typed message.

better yet, someone has done screen grabs.
But trust me you want feature displacement. my understanding of it is that with out it, maya just moves existing points with the disp map, with feature disp it creates new polys during rendering untill the curviture of the resulting displaced faces are within a certain tolerance. Ie it will subdivide at rendertime untill faceting is at a minumum and all the fine details have been accounted for.
Just use mental ray if you can.

Unfortunately, there is no ONE pdf to explain Mentalray.. it's one of the more complicated render engines there is.. other then PRMAN :)
There are many tutorials on the web, and it all depends on your level of knowledge. Basic stuff you can find plenty of, but the high-end stuff you need training video's - from Alias, Gnomon or Mesmer.
good luck :)
I can't wait for PRMAN to be integrated to MAYA 6..

Hey KnightSoul!
You definitely need Olivier Renouard's site at:
www.drone.org (http://www.drone.org)
for this sort of thing :)
