View Full Version : Apparently I CAN do a realistic head...
Well, after doing a million charactures, monsters, and other freaks, I decided to sculpt a correctly proportioned head. I still have to fix the forhead wrinkles on top and smooth the rear of the cheekbone and add little details, but it's a good start I think. The wonky wrinkles on his forehead remind me of The Submariner so that's what I'm calling him now.
I made him different this time. Instead of using my normal smoothed box base, I used the head from the body that Zach Petroc posted a while ago. At this point there's really nothing left of the original, but the base was a really good one to start from. Here's a link to the thread where Zach uploaded the model:

Thank you Zach for sharing that...:D
Anyway, I'll post more as he progresses...
121 welcome and appreciated...:D

:tu: the top looks great i like the expression.. perhaps the mouth area could also have some more pronounced folds..
Thanks Jason...:D
PixelSoul:Yeah, I'm actually playing with the mouth righ now. I got the lips better, but I still need to figure out how to do the Folds around the corner of the mouth...I'll get there eventually...:D
Thanks for the comments, guys.

That's awesome Dickie. If we could see his thoughts I'd say he's thinking about either sine or cosine. ;)

good job on your rendering could you post your light setup and material thank you for your help!
BillRoberts: Good one, Bill... I was of course referring to The Submariner comic book character, not an actual member of a sub crew...
Troy: The lights and materials are Pixolators white dino egg shaders from many moons ago...I'll try and post it here. It's a document file that you load into Z-Brush...Whe it loads the materials and lights load with it.
Looks like it worked...Have fun...I have an update on the model. I'll post it tomorrow...

Here's an update. I fixed the nose, forehead, lips and cheeks. I'm diggin' where he is going. Going to add wrinkles later. I think he is my best technical sculpt yet.

Hi Dickie, that is a very 'Burne Hogarth' face. :) 50.

...or classical head, it's always sculpture !
All are difficult!
Bravo! :tu:

Burne hogath of course ;)
http://rocbo.chez-alice.fr/Max/culture/hogarth/img/burn1.gif
Rich: I thought this last night when I rendered it. Yeah, Burne is a BIG influence on my drawing too. I've actually recommended his books on this forum before. His Dynamic Anatomy should be on ALL artists bookshelves, I believe. Comparing my work to his is a huge compliment I don't deserve yet...:D
Frenchy: I was calling him neo-classical...He kinda remonds me of the German soldiers you see on the 1930's propoganda posters...

02-20-06, 04:26 PM
Well, he looks that level to me. :tu: Yeah, and the German Posters you've captured too. 50.
Rich: I'm glad you think he's Hogarth-like...:D The cool thing about this render is that it's all Z-Brush. The only retouch I did was 5 pixels in the mouth and airbrushing the collarbone. That's it. Only Z-Brush lets me render my models so they look illustrative.
It dosen't feel CG, it feels like an airbrush illustration or a fine pencil render. So unbelieveable what we can get out of this package. When I say it rekindled my artistic side, I am not kidding. Z-Brush and Z-Brush alone did that. I am forever in their debt.

Yes, this is a Wild and Wonderful piece of Software. I know I have only scratched the surface of it. You notice I have yet to try something like this. I think I'll stick with Toons and Monsters. :D 50.
That's what I was thinking, Rich. I never really tried to do a realistic head because,
a) I like the whimsical over the realistic
b) I wasn't sure if I was up to it skillwise
c) I didn't have the anatomical training to pull it off
As I haven't gotten too many reponses, I don't think too many folks like this piece. It's kind of sterile, really. But I dig it a lot because I proved to myself I could do it. And as far as improving our skillset, that's all that really counts, isn't it...:D
I think you should try to model something you think you can't model. If you pull it off, you will feel great, if you don't, at least you learned something in the process...:D
Dickie
Updated his lips and jaw, nose, eyesockets. He's not such a sourpuss now.
More will come...

Its getting better and better :tu: I like it.
Hi Dickie.
nice sculpting. I still think you are tending towards an overly stylised charicature. It's well done but is more like a comic book hero. ie features are slightly exaggerated.
I'd suggest taking a few reference photos and use the reference photo script( can't remember its name) so that you don't over exaggerate the features.
Otherwise. excellent.

One thing, I'm looking for eyes and also study eyes, at the moment... and I think, there's some little improvement to do on this head. You need to push the extremities of the eyes inside ( a little), and also reduce the end of the bloody, little part beside the Iris.
I think, that's really a place (the eyes) where you can see, if the head is made with Z. I have seen a good pict that explain this very well. (made with max). Take a look.

I really love the cleaness of your forms dude. I defiantely agree with peoples comments that say it looks like a hogarth figure. The shader really puts emphasis on your forms overall. Nice, you've inspired me.

Erklaerbar: I'm happy you like him. Still not sure where I'm gonna go with him yet.
El-D: Thanks...:D Yeah, I probably will always tend towards exaggerated features as that's where most of my influences lie... Once I finish the main modeling, I might try and resculpt him towards a real person. Thank you for taking the time for a critique...:tu:
Marcus: thank you, some more fun is in store...
Alan: I try to give him some expression, but not too much for my base. I'm going to play with expressions once I have him along a little farther..
Smileman: Yeah, he's pretty much neo-classical sculpture, but I need the practice...:D The tear duct is indeed too long. I'm going to bring it closer to the iris tonight after work. I think the whole eye is slightly too wide. I'll probably move the whole structure in slightly too. Thanks for the link! I'll be reading that in detail later this evening when I get back to the model.
Pestopants: BINGO! That's what I like to hear when I make something. The fact you were inspired makes it all worth it...:D We all learn and build from each others work and that's what makes our work live on. Go forth and create, My Brother...:D
Thank you all for your comments and crits. They are invaluable to me.
Dickie
Update: I added a phototexture using Zaaplink. I still have to finish the texture but it's mostly there. Still some holes that didn't get patched, image-wise. And of course the bottom of the model which will be covered up by his jacket.
I also added the SS officer's cap. I did the base model of the cap in Lightwave and exported it to Z-Brush. I then tweaked the shape around and painted it. I then made the eagle and skull pins from a colored alpha. I drew them out, picked 'em up with the MRGBZ Grabber brush and made them into 3d using the alpha pallette. Fun stuff. The felt texture on the hat I made a while ago for my Frankenstein jacket.
I'm gonna do the officer jacket next and then finish up the paint texture on his face.
121 welcome...

The hat looks like 5stars :tu::tu::tu::tu:
Cant get more realistic :]
Waitong for the final result, for now i dont like teh ears :/
I was doodling about and came up with this. Beldar from the Coneheads. It was an old Saturday Night Live sketch with Dan Akroyd and Jane Curtain.
Made into a fun movie back in the late 80's. This is Dan Akroyd's character. I did him up in 2 hours or so from the previous head in this thread...
I'll add more stuff later, once I get my Acer tablet computer setup...

Lemonado: I'm waiting for the tablet PC with bated breath. I wanted it delivered today, but I think it will probably get here Monday. Oh well, good things come to those who wait, I guess. As for the dental pose for Beldar, I considered doing this pose, but I could only find 1 tiny thumbnail image of it. Maybe I'll rent the DVD and screencap it.
OBZ: Yo, Yo, Bro! I'm happy you like the Beldar model...:D Yeah, I'm still at Zoic and I am still liking it there a lot. We miss you. Me and Graves were talking about you yesterday. I was telling him how well I liked that hot pink patent leather mini skirt with the matching platform go-go boots you wore that last day at Zoic. I thought the skirt went particularly well with your tattoos and beard...
When ya get back down here to the land of quakes and honeys, give me a call or PM me here, we'll take ya out to lunch. And by lunch I mean booze. You always looked particularly hot through an alcoholic fog. Kinda like a demented Penthouse model seen through a Vaseline smeared lens...
Drums: Heya Marco! Thanks for the nice words...:D I WILL write you that letter I've been promising... I've just been nuts with work lately...
Arambarri: He's still got a little ways to go, proportionally. I'm glad you saw the likeness though...:D

OBZ: Whoa, wait...Which pictures? The ones in the nursing home showers or the ones in the public restroom of that Burger King on Crenshaw? Well, nevermind which ones, just print both sets in triplicate. I need one for my mom, one for my reel, and one for the president of the National Horse Breeders Association. Man, is HE ever gonna be surprised...

Man that is great work, you really model beautifully. To think you morphed him into Zoldar so beautifully in a lousy 2 hours! Makes me very jealous. Be interested to see him as a completely realistic human form, as brilliant as he is the original is stil very stylised. The inner brow ridges could never be, and he's generally too long, particularly upper lip. The tear ducts are too long but also you have the eyelid skin going all the way around.
But that's just anatomy ,the work is fantastic, I loved the way you did the first render, and the felt on the hat (& the hat itself) is pure magic. How the hell does one make a texture like that?
Thanks for this work, makes me wanna give up & makes me wanna work harder
