My first attempt to sculpt a human head. I know it's not going to be easy but I was wrong - it's so damn hard. Can't not get the sharp clean edge and smooth surface that I want , doesn't matter how hard I try. Please can someone show me a tip or two?? please! The picture below shows my prograss so far....................thx!!!
p.s. it's made from one shpere3d and then turn it to skin.

After days of practise here is The Final image....well sort of...

awesome job!

just a piece of advice...broaden the neck area and extend it so the whole cone shape of the model......

excellent stuff...keep it up!
love it!

always start to detail low poly first. The sphere is fine for a start, but not in default resolution(already too high). Under "initialize" change hdivide and vdivide to lower values, 32 and 17 for example. Then make adaptive skin. You can now also hide out some polygons for eyes and mouth and edge loop them into the head (See edge loop tutorials for more information) Its now much easier to get the rough shape done.

Hi guys thanks for the kind comments and tips. I had a go just to test the setting you recommended. It works much better. I will just have to abanden the two heads I am working on and try to start it again with the right setting.
thx again, very much appreciated!!

well, it is much easier to start molding with low poly. this new head took me 4 hours so far and I am happy with it. the one before took me whole day to make. Although I still can't edge loop at the right place. :qu:

I like the one with hair and eyes! BTW: Another trick to get more consistent lines is to smooth them after drawing (via transform mode, not deformation), eventually with redrawing and resmoothing. By switching between the subd levels (draw on high poly, smooth on mid poly) you can get some pretty decent stuff.

sorrywell, am really sorry you think these heads are ugly.:D

as I said I am very new to zbrush only start learning it maybe 10 days ago or so and these heads are my very first set so I don't expect they came out good.

anyway, I am just learning zbrush and having fun and hopefully I will have more UGLY heads coming out very soon.

I like the "mercury" look of the tentacled creature-- part alien, part mechanoid! (is that a word?)

Just one question, re: head-with-hair-jpg. Did you build the hair shapes then add them, or pull them out of the skull? Thx.

edit:
Umm, yeah, on second look, they are chin horns not tentacles, aren't they?

thanks, Davinci!! (nice name btw:cool: )
I like that half creature and half machine thing as well. Still not sure what is will come out in the end.

As for the girl with hair, I mask the individual lump of the hair and brush it with std brush to the desire shape. very easy to do.

Cool project! Hard edges are tough for me too. I heard someone say that increasing the CreaseLvl slider can help get harder edges when creasing, so you may see if that does anything for you. :)

Proportionally, the hip to knee portion of the leg looks a little short and the foot seems a bit large, but the foot bit could just be part of the armor design.
Keep it up! :D :tu:

The other robot - see picture above somehow cannot open anymore while I was puting texture to it. Everytime I try to open the file it force to close the Zbrush. Well, hours of hardwork down to the drain.

now am going to make some background with city on fire!!!

p.s. does anybody know why the projected images on the armorsuit looks kinda opaque??

lemonnado

That looks fantastic! Great texture job. I don;t think it's opaque, I guess it's the specular fooling you a bit. Go into the material and set it down and see...

Here is my next exercise to learn pose with zshpere.
I did the 2D illustration last month, and I thought it could make a good model for this exercise.
I made the basic shape (comic style) yesterday, now just keep my finger cross and hope after pose everything will still be holding together!!
p.s. Cannot believe I have to put that warning message!.

Spend last few days try to figure out how to apply 32bit displacement map on Maya. finally, I got some result, not perfect but it's getting there. poly counts were about 5000
and took 1min and 17 secs to renender using mental ray

can't make the zshpere pose 2 pose to work (I think I will have to wait zb 2.5 to come out), so dig this head out and play a bit

 I like how it dawns on the viewer that the top cartilage of her left ear has been cut off, then healed over at the angle of the faint head scar. Nice touch-- something to contemplate when she's a close-up talking head in non-action scenes. This gyno-mech has a history!

Hi Davinci,

you mush be one of the fewer breed that will look hehind the superficial surfaces!!:D
all these images are only exercises while learning zbrush. I don't really have a theme just let me imagination running wild.
Hopefully I will produce something worth looking one day. In the mean time, I will try enjoy zbrushing as much as I can.
