Hi there.

I was wondering if anyone can help refering to me any tutorial or tip for rigging and weighting a six legged arachnid I currently working on for my thesis. I would appreciatte inmensely if someone can explain me the logic for achieving an effective surface weighting for my character. The image is attached for better appreciation.

Thanks,
Sincerelly,

Santiago V.

I wouldn't worry too much about weighting issues with your model. Depending on the 3d package you use to weight and animate it really shouldn't be too much of an issue..(providing you will be binding a LOW res mesh) The geometry you've built looks aticulated the way a joint set up would be. Try global binding in Maya.. with a low joint threshhold. Prob have to do more weighting for the eye part of the head.

Thanks for the suggestion by the way. With global binding do u mean Smooth bind because I dont see any other binding method than smooth and hard bind.

Thanks,

Yes... use smooth binding and just set the # of joint to say 2 or 3.. that way you will have less weights to paint... it generally does a pretty good job on things like legs (where the geometry is usually in close proximity to the joint). Smooth bind can cause probs when you bind geo that is far away from the desired influence joint, but that's what painting weights are for I guess....
