I haven't tried this yet but off the top of my head it seems interesting enough for effects. Works in two planes levelled accordingly for relative eye depth.
The first layer uses a simple light based alpha to filter the effect on the bottom layer.
The second layer is a deep (blue) color upon which bottom objects rests.
I think applying the transparency effect could effectively blend these two for an interesting effect.
I was thinking for example, of making a boat then the idea came to me that it should be poised on a bottom place, covered mid-way (float line) with a surface plane on transparency which could create an intermediary blend.
Could maybe even add a third layer below the second for an even stronger fade..
What do you guys think is this realisable or does it just seem okay on paper?..
Has anyone tried 3D water? :)
