Well, i would have to say, the inspiration for this character, definitly came from king kong, i loved the skull island inhabitants. i just made this guy a little more african influence, but i loved those bone piercings! gonna texture him up too, but would love to know what you think so far.
I posted this guy earlier on my other thread, but im gonna finish this guy up fo my reel...well, im only doing the bust for this guy...and i do plan on finishing my other characters too!

hey guys, thanks for the response.
yeah, i am going to texture him up, as well as create a few blendshapes for him too.
a quick question, is it a good idea, to generate the displacment maps for the blend shape objects as well? i've never really done a facial rig using the detail from ZBrush.
w0000t its my basemesh :D
or am i mistaken? Cool stuff!!

i downloaded it ages ago, and its been sitting in my library, an when my worked crashed a few days ago, i had to take time off it, and just enjoy ZB for a little, and this character was one of three that i did from it, and loved this guy so im gonna finish him up! great thread you started there tho!

thanks guys,
totally agree about the ears! theyre not my favourite part, and tend to leave it till last...BAD HABIT :o will resolve asap, did a little touching up here, but not enough...
...testing the skin though, and pretty happy with the results thus far, im still going to do more, like with the scaring, and a few more inperfections...
...let me know wat ya think

The modeling looks great. I think the skin color/texture is too much like chocolate. Of course, who am I? heheh But maybe more variations and freckles and stuff would move him further from that Hershey bar look.
Your modeling is tight, though.

This is the rough f his anatomy so far...this isnt finished!
i would like the anatomy buffs to have a look. the areas that are going to be covered will be the shoulders and upper back and chest...also his groin and buttox area. probably shouldnt have added those veins so early...but would like some feedback on the anatomy before i move foward.

I'm no anatomy expert but usually, Africans or those of that descent have thinner calves but fantasy means you don't have to follow any rules. The left bicep seems a bit large but overall it looks good.

hey guys,
here's a shot at the finished model... might change a thing here and there, but im quite happy with the result... practically everything done in ZB, although i touched up the topology of the face and body, mainly the hands and feet... as well as base meshe's for the cloth, done in maya...
...if i havnt said it before (which i know i have!) ZBrush is an amazing programme!!
i need to start pieceing my demo reel together, and getting a job doing this now! (hopefully!) hope you like...

first off, great modeling.
Two suggestions:
I would pull (his) left shoulder back and down a little bit. This would open up the chest some, adding to his menacing nature, add some more weight onto the spear, and create a nice contrasting angle to that of the hips.
Also- it seems as though you've light touched the texture a little, for a model this strong- i would spend a bit more time painting him up as he seems a little flat as of the moment.
Two tutorials to check out
Antropus's picasso tut:
http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/picasso/tutorial.htm
and one that isn't zbrush, or 3d related, but regards painting a model of dracula:
http://www.amazingmodeler.com/tipsarch5.htm
Personally, I would also change the background color; it's too close to his skin tone and flattens out the dynamic of the piece. Check out some of steve mcurry's photos, he is a master of painterly color schemes for tribal peoples.

Very nice. I agree with Defago and would also add two more critiques. One, the skin texture (bumps) on the bicep is far too visible. Bicep areas are very smooth mostly. Also, the specular is too much on the wrist and other places (unless he's oiled up for a big upcoming war hehehe).
But with a few tweaks, it can be really top notch!
Did you render in zbrush or maya?

hey all...
..thanks for some really great feedback there.
Defago- i agree with a lot about what you are saying, especially in regards to the background, and texture (wiht it being flat? im not sure) but i think especially within the arms and legs, some variance is needed. and a new background too! i needed to step away from thie piece for a while. and now reading what you said, i can see what needs to be done. those tutorials are great, and im familiar with them both.
Professor- the bicep definitly needs a smooth over... i wanted an oiled up look for him, but will matt out the hands a little more, lookin at it now, yea, a bit too specular! and ive rendered this in ZBrush, i might do a turntable in maya of him, when i get to generating displacement maps! still figuring the best way to do that.
thanks again for all the feedback, another reason why these forums are so valuable!
very good man, great model and good texture as well.
it is nice to meet to in ZbrushCentral as we all from NZ:), I am working for Binary Star in Auckland now.
only things i can say about your work is about the right hand, the bottom of the thumb and the palm is a little bit something to me. about the texture, i think you can try to work on the specula map a little.
