I fancied trying my hand at something a little more stylistic for a change. As it happens I was just having one of those days where nothing seemed to go right in life. So I thouhgt I'd sit down and doodle in ZB for a while to take my mind off things. 1 1/2 hours later one finished model.
Here in England blokes like these handling security in nightclubs are known as bouncers ( or more lately doormen). I have no idea what their title is elsewhere in the world. I've tried t concentrate a little more on the character for this as it's a 'one off'.
Rendered all in Zbrush with a little post in photoshop. (nothing drastic just depth of field and colour correction).
Hope you like it.

PS here's a render I thought a little too 'stylistic' to show on its own LOL.

Hey Darth,
That 1st image looked remarkably similar to Johm Candy to me. Nice :tu:

Drastic Measures
I've decided to dump the texture entirely and redo the mesh starting from a lower sub division level completely. To my eye after looking at him about a week after modelling him, he didn't look p*ssed off enough. So broader neck and smaller eyes (maybe a tad too small even for a stylistic piece?) The texture on this at the mo is basicaly a placeholder because I hate grey renders.
Obviously there's a heck of a lot more detail to go on him yet but I'd like to get the basic form and gesture right before getting to that (for once!)
I could really do with some C & C on this as it's going to be part of a larger piece. I don't want to move on till I am sure I've got the head right.

It definitely has a stylized look but what I would do is upen up the eyes more but try to keep the same line angles to make them look serious and mean. You might even want to try and exaggerate the features a little bit more like a stronger jaw and smaller eyes even. I dunno, it's a nice piece, regardless...

Blaine what a great idea! I never thought of using something like the liquify filter in photoshop to mes around with expressions before. Especially good as you don't have to commit you model to it, plus its a fair bit quicker. I'll be taking some of those ideas expression wise on board as well as a few others and see where it ends up.
So far I'm seing a body and a very big gun in his future LOL. Glad you like the model as I have to admit having a soft spot for him myself. With any luck I may get some more work done tonight and see what else I can get done. Unfortuinatly that also depends on my son's teething.

Nice angle , but needs serious work.

Far too much?
I never got to get as much done on this tonight as I wished to. Well I did, but Zbrush crashed on me and being a bit on the tired side I'd forgot to save recently (most unlike me!) I have a feeling that with the second image I went a little too far as its starting to look a bit too 'cartoon anger-ish' for my liking. I thought I'd try a different material and lighting set-up (as I really couldn't face doing all that work again that I'd lost).

I really like it!! :D
I think the expression is fine (certainly looks a few bouncers i've met) the only thing I would say is perhaps it needs a little more visable face detail expecially in the forehead area, but it still works well the way it is.
NICE!! :tu:

I prefer the versions with less emotion. It is hard to piss off a bouncer, they've seen everything and are usually bored by the antics of drunks and posers.
I'll never forget the expression of bored contempt on the 300lb Samoan bouncer at "Ireland's 32" just before he smacked a drunken sailor to the floor with an open hand swat to side of the head, the sailor never knew what hit him.

Don't generalize drunk sailors, I've seen a drunk sailor take on a 5 bouncers before they just left him to his bottle. I know, I'm both a sailor and used to be a bouncer. :p

Messing Around with an old Texture
As it happens due to some serious 'brain fade' on my part I started to mess around with the wrong version of the model. So a less detailed version got some texture treatment. I thought I'd take a texture I had lying around from another model and see if I could fit it on this one, didn't come out too bad I think. There are soem probs with dark areas that shouldn't be there, but thats easily fixed.
Enjoy

haha the dark eyes give him a kind of Uncle Fester look.:)

Texture Work and finer details
I found that its a pretty interesting balance, getting the more fleshy look to a face and still having some detail on this head. Obviously fatter people don't have skin that stretches over bone as much as a thinner or older person, so maybe this model isn't one that shows off ZB to its fullest extent.
So a few fine wrinkles (most of which you aren't obvious in this light) and some skin pores later and I felt I better improve what to tonights eyes was an extremely dodgy texture. Hopefully I've got it a bit nearer and not as red as some of my previous 'skins'. Plus I hope he look a little less like 'uncle fester' from the adams family now. (I have to admit the last image did look like him. ;) )
I tried to give the face a slighly more sweaty look that some more ample faced people have. (Haven't I done well to avoid the word fat so far? )
Enjoy
C & C welcome as usual

Making fun of fat people huh  Just kidding ;) I'm fat and I give you permission to use that word all you want. I figure it took a few thousand gallons of beer and I earned every ounce. If anyone gets upset you have them come talk to me
Looking great :tu: Gets better every post.

Jesus bong: Thanks, I'm really starting to like the idea of semi realistic looking characertures. I'm definatly going to explore this style further.
industripop: Actually thats exactly what i had in mind when I started him as a quick sketch so your comment brought much joy and hapiness to a tired DarthWayne this morning.
Blaine: Woo Hoo! Now I can say FAT as much as I like.... fat, fat, fat, fat, fat, fat, fat, fat, fat :D :D :D :D :D
Aminuts: Thanks to the helpful input as usual mate. Your comments always serve to point me in the right direction if I lose focus.
Monstermaker:

mmGlad he looks ok to your eye. Yeah it probably would be suicidal to call a guy like this fat. However... when I was about 19 a bouncer quite similar to this guy threw me down a flight of stairs for asking why my local nightclub didn't serve 'newcastle brown ale'......So I know for a fact that mental stability isn't a particular requirement for bouncers (at least not where I live).
Well next I have his body and accessories to do. I suppose I've been in too much of a comfort zone of heads, heads and more heads of late so its time to stretch those artistic muscles a bit more. At the moment I'm thinking of keeping the final render within Zbrush just to see how I can get him to look without resulting to Subsurface in maya etc.

Test Composition #1
I can't really take credit for the jacket and tie as they started out as poser meshes (not something I've ever tried to be honest, but seems to have its uses). I messed with them a bit although they need one helluva lot of work. Shader is terrible on the jacket and just something I mashed together in 30 seconds. Shows where this guy is headed....although no weapon as yet.

I realy like the expression. More smugness than anger. It's fitting for a bouncer. He looks like a real gangster in that suit.
The suit definately adds to him. He's looking real good now. Keep going...:D
