View Full Version : Lovin' 1.5, but needing OSX

Just a gentle reminder - Mac OS 9 is legacy software. 1.5 brings OSX to its knees - not only Classic, but all of OSX suffers dramatically if 1.5 is run. After a short session in ZBrush the machine must be rebooted to clear the memory and return stability to the system. My Powerbook normally goes weeks or months between reboots, but Zbrush can change all that with a single launch.

So while I think 1.5 is beautiful, and a huge breakthrough, and wonderful, and amazing - until OSX native comes to ZBrush, I mostly won't be using it. :(

It is a shame to have some of the most advanced software technology which only runs on Mac's legacy OS - don't you think? What if the Windows users could only use it reliably if it was run on Windows 95?

Yes Aurick, I know that it's coming sometime soon, but I feel that now that 1.5 is actually released, I have to make the point. ;)

I'm with you STiM. I too use a MAC. OSX is an amazing software, as well as ZBrush 1.5 It just seems 'normal' for the two to be paired together.

The frequent reboots are tiresome also. I feel your pain.

from what I've read about OSX development, it's a miracle to get anything running, much less running efficently, best of luck guys

Hmm. I'm a software developer, and I know lots of developers. Its pretty unanimous among everyone I know that OSX is the single finest OS to develop in and for that there is. I have lots of software which runs better and faster in OSX than any other environment.

I think we'll find that OSX becomes the finest version of ZBrush to be had - and I'm told that it's soon on the way. :)

KingSalami, just through my own experiences, OS X is the fastest most reliable operating system I've ever had the pleasure working with. To this date, I have not had one problem with the operating system. No crashes no errors, nothing.

I have to add my vote for the OS X version of 1.5 - As it is, ZBrush is one of the only reasons I still have to boot up clumsy ol' Classic anymore...

But that said, I haven't had a problem with 1.5 running in classic mode so far (Mac OS 9.2.2 under Mac OS X 10.1.5, on a TiBook 500 with 1GB RAM). I've been happily poking about and running the tutorial ZScripts with nary a problem.

I know y'all're already working on it (or will be, as soon as you catch up on your sleep!) but it's always nice to show the flag from time to time.

OS X is not only the future, it's the _present_! ZBrush is the only Classic app I've bought since I started using OS X fulltime in October 2001. It's working fine and I'm happy playing with it, but I'm also looking forward to the "real" version being released eventually. :p

Been away a while... not using Z really because of the lack of a native OSX version. With Apple's latest announcement that as of January their computers will not boot to anything BUT OSX, that means that one can hardly say they have a Mac version of the software unless it is native X. Otherwise, you could put that happy Mac face on a software because it runs under Virtual PC - which "Classic" is about the same as.

Any news? :)
