Hellllo,

i finally have to post something!! The other day i decided to create THE PERFECT canvas for doing a quick head in zbrush :) I sometimes see someone, for example while watching a film and then i want to model it really quickly. So this is great for sketching and if im inclined i would still be able to do something more with it later. I tried to keep the basemesh as low as possible while keeping a good count on the first subdiv.

Here are some heads ive done with it:

a rockman yay:
11.jpg (http://javascript%3Cb%3E%3C/b%3E:zb_insimg%28%2723787%27,%2711.jpg%27,1,0%29)

this is meant ot be a (dead) german actor:
aguirre3.JPG (http://javascript%3Cb%3E%3C/b%3E:zb_insimg%28%2723788%27,%27aguirre3.JPG%27,1, 0%29)

rendered with mrsss:
aguirre7.jpg (http://javascript%3Cb%3E%3C/b%3E:zb_insimg%28%2723789%27,%27aguirre7.jpg%27,1, 0%29)

and this was something i did on a longer trainjourney of a sleeping girl opposite me. I didnt finsih it all in one go (left first stop damn) so i had to phantasize a little bit when i got home.

trainsketch03_s.JPG (http://javascript%3Cb%3E%3C/b%3E:zb_insimg%28%2723790%27,%27trainsketch03_s.JP G%27,1,0%29)

This things are by no means "finished" but rather sketches as i said. finishing normally takesme ages and i rather do a couple of those to get a bit more "loose".

I also uploaded the mesh i am using so that other can have a go too - also 2 textures that i use for masking out the upper/lower lips/lids when working in that area.

Crits are welcome of course!

Re : " i'm stunned by your incredible artistic skill "

My personal favourite is the 'rockman' - I love the deisgn. Thanks for sharing your work.

Btw - Interestingly enough - I seem to have run into the same girl as you : http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=30868
I found mine, however, in a ' Cherry Blossom Tree ' :D

Excellent modelling, Sheb! The Klaus Kinski is my fave, as I am a big fan of his work. He played a fun character in Sergio Leone's "For a few dollars more"...:D

He was amazing in Herzog's Aguirre, 'The Wrath of God' also.

I admire your non-symmetrical modeling.

Inspirational work, for sure and Top Row vote from me...:tu:

hello!

Oh thats nice :) Thanks for all the kind replies!!

It is Klaus Kinski! Hurrah ;) one of my favoriteactors - its not really meant to be realistic though. I stopped somewhere inbetween charicarture and realism scared to go all the way (but not all is lost yet) ;)

Cral: No problem, id be glad to see some other heads! I tried animating the rockman using the lowest mesh and it works really well for simple things. Ill post something on that later!

Take care all,:D

Great stuff, I love the Rockman!

The MR render of Kinski is great, Any chance for a posting of the settings for the SSS? I can't seem to get my head around it, Mental ray is kicking my butt on a daily basis!

Great modeling Seb, Klaus Klinski is a very interesting character indeed. Your "canvas" look very clean too, I can't wait to see it animated!

I just played a couple of hours with your canvas, did this sketch :

http://stephane.dufournier.free.fr/WIP/zbrush/zbrushdoodle.jpg

your canvas is really nice to work with, except for one thing that is not correct around the nostrils, check the image I overpainted your wire, sorry I can't explain it clearly in english
you've managed it pretty well on your models though, I considered it too late when I had already subdivided my mesh a lot.

awesome! Thats great to know that somebody actually looked at it :) Personally i think what you pointed out is still ok-ish, it didnt really give me any problems.

I did however change my opinion about the whole technique in general ab little (using a really lowcage to start with). I do have a quiet hard time getting some details right - especially modelling the eyelids properly. It is great for sketching still of course but for "serious" work id still prefer to use a higher res basemesh and rather do the finer details and "un-cg-ing" in zbrush... I just wished the whole zbrush functionality would be integrated in one of the big 3d packages - i just miss a few things i have there. Combined it could be so very powerful.

Anyway.. stop ranting , on with work :)

Take it easy,
seb

yes I prefer modeling thre basemesh further in maya/max too, especially because you'll never know if you'd like to work some blendshapes later and maybe animate it. :)

anyway I'm impressed by what you achieved with your rockman, it proves a very simple basemesh can sometime be enough for a still image

:tu: Sheb, great canvas you uploaded :tu: , I really like to work with it.

I always have difficulties with getting the base of my model right, using your canvas I don't have to worry about that, it is a delight to sculpt with.

here are some heads I made using it. (they still need some work though).

btw do you create something like this base in ZBrush or do you use 3D MAX? Is it even possible in ZBrush?, 'cause I know nothing about 3DMAX)

hey sheb - your models are awesome - but I was wondering what kind of laptop do you have that can handle all those poly's! anyhow great work!
I'm also interested in any alpha's you use for getting that rockman and clay look to the models...can you show what they look like or is it all sculpted outside of pm?

thanks for showing you work - its very inspirational

hello!

hehe thanks, the laptop is a acer travelmate 8104 with 2 gigs of ram. I wouldnt get it though because it just wont run xsi - it gives me bluescreens . A friend of mine has the same model and same problem. (theres a ati x700 mobile in there)

I only used one alpha and that at the very end, most if it i did with a simple circle alpha! I post it anyway..

shi sheb-fella, I use the same laptop, it's wide-screen 2100 with XP-Profi :tu: and there is every
2D or 3D application (include ZB and max...) running:cool: I like Acer and your artworks (especially Kinski-shot) very much...

Its stuff like this that really inspires me and makes me love ZB; rough and loose yet exceptional modeling.

I agree with Tortilla... love how they are.

Back again... just been playing around with your canvas. Its great!

I usually like to to start from stratch with bases as Im still learning (not just ZB) and believe you can never practice the basics too much but Im having a great time with yours... and, well... its far better than my bases...

But the upside is that Im learning a heap with it (plus Im actually reading the manual as well, first for me).

Anyway, thanks again for your generous offerings, hope I can do the same someday.

Would love to see Klaus or Rockman up on the Top Row.

Well, I dont know about cool:) but here is a render from ZB and Maya. Very rough. Referred to the anatomy from Klaus too so I apologise for any poor resemblance. The latter (Maya render) didnt work out too well and Im not really prepared to fix it up. Was fun doing tho.

Will have a proper play with your canvas in the near future and will be sure to mention the base.

Thanks again.

Hi Coye!

I think the mainthing on has to try is to keep some defined lines in the model and then add more subtle small details as needed. If everything has the same strength it will probably end up looking noisy or "blobby". I think a good way of doing this is work for big detail on the lower subdleveles, less freedom is easier sometimes ;). (to be honest i think i went abit overboardwith kinski too!)

For the render it looks like its got way too much scattering!

take it easy,
seb

coye
01-19-06, 03:35 AM
Yes, very blobby:) and no, Kinski is just fine!

I was actually going for an exagerated model on reading your post on Kinski then started pushing back in... and then I got this! was a little embarased to send actually:( but your feedback is true to a lot of my weaknesses... (well, in 3d at least:)).

Good advice regarding working on lower sublevels... as is dropping the jelly like SSS.

Thanks for the feedback.

hello all! great base model sheb, although i had some trouble around the mouth and ear area (probably my workflow ;)
i did a quick head based on one of great Petey Konig's concept art...it's just a start and the perspective is wrong (rendered in the user view in ZB) but still ok i think...
will put more detail in it when i have some spare time :)
thanx for the canvs Sheb ;)

First post here.. :)

A big thank you! For uploading the Canvas - This is my first "serious" fooling around in ZBrush. I Donloaded the ZB2 demo yesterday, so unfortunately, this picture is all I've got..

I might add, that all of this was made using the "trial and error" strategy. ;)

Edited a bit in Photoshop, since I havn't figured aout to assign another material to the eyes yet.. (I'm very new at this.)

Edit: Now I need a good skin material, (anybody know a good one?) since I'll probably get fed up doing zombies all the time :D

Thanks for the canvas Sheb, LOVE the Kinski sculpt, great skin texture too!

You probably know this, but Cesar Dacol mentions this thread and the mesh you've so kindly provided in a new tutorial from Pixo. Quite a testimomial having Cesar use your mesh, it MUST be good! Also, he mentions that it was made in Z2 and obviously hes had to make subtools for the eyes etc. Perhaps you'd consider doing this to your mesh in Z3 (which I assume you have - unless you're on a Mac), as Cesar doesn't tell the punters how to do it themselves?

Thanks again!
