Superb work Sebcesoir, I just hope, with apprehension derived from the title of your post, that you don't waste your effort on a silly theme/topic like religion.

It reminds me of a Pope whose name escapes me. That was my first reaction but the title made me question that. He seems to be wearing armor but even that kind of rings a bell. Like I say the face looks familiar and I'm dead sure I've seen it in marble.

just one question: do you do all that job of detail in the armor with projection master? because if you do it must be a real pain to snapshot all those little indentations....

do you make your own alphas download them? (if so could you please tell me where?)

The low res mesh is 780 quads, the high level is level 7, 3 121 152 quads...
I have 1 gig of ram, and I can tell you I reach the limit of my pc! I should upgrade to 2 Gig...

Here's an advance version of the head, you can see the details of the helmet. Everything is customed alphas and free hand sculpting.

I'll start texturing, and add face details.

Outstanding work! Whenever I put this much detail into a character it frequently becomes so daunting that I have to take brakes from the project. For selfish reasons I hope that you can keep it up until completion.
I did have one question, I have simular memory limitationa 1.5g instead of 1g, but you've found a way to push the poly count above what my current settings allow. Could you explain (in small words hehe) how you've set your preferences to accomadate this higher number?

Thanks guys! I still have tons of work on it...

About the alpahs, size must be something like 256 I think...
Regaring a video tutorial, why not... The thing is I work sometime for an hour, sometime for four, witch is not the best way to do a video!
I should planify it, record scrypt, otimise the script to rmove unusefull steps, and replay the script to record the video. I think I should need something like a entire week! FUll time job!

Sebcesoir, would you mind explaining your pore application ? I'm a bit curious here. :)
To me, foreheads are usually not very "pory", but the nose surely is - and you did the opposite. As well for your beard, getting a flocky one is not really realistic.

I'm sure you know what you do, so I'm not criticizing at all, rather asking for details. :)

Maybe the best textured head I've seen around here. I am very impressed with the pores and especially the stubble. It looks like there are even tiny bristles in the stubble. How did you do this. Was it done as a deform in PM or were the pores and stubble put on after it was dropped with an alpha?

Even its the same words, be sure its much appreciate, after holidays week spent working, its a pleasure to get such feedbacks...
I'll post soone the base lors res (before any touchup in zbrush), a closeup from the helmet, and the sme picture, untextured, and with a simple material.

Regarding the video tuturial, it would have been hard on this model, because sometime I worked only 2 hours, and sometime more than 5...
I think if you plan do do a video tuturial, it must be planed precisely, and you have to organise your workflow raound 3 hours for each steps, and record precisely the scripts, and replay it several time to be sure it runs correctly, and sometime you have o clean some steps...
Maybe I will plan it for anotther specific project.
But for now, I need a rest and enjoy my few remainings hollidays ;)

I was wondering when someone would finaly zbrush something like this. I remember going to see Riddick and I found it funny that they took a famous suit of armor from the italian renaissance and bastardized it with some minor changes. And the end effect is armor suited for space travel. The great thing about it is, that it still has the same effect as it would have had during the renaissance. The original suit had a helmet that had two eyes in the front and two on the back of the head....but regardless....I really like your head model and the skin texture is really good. Although, I would consider going over the armor coloring. Seems like you rushed it. And trust me...if you do...it will be well worth the effort. Im slightly discouraged that you modeled this armor because I was planing on doing the original suit. But you beat me to the punch. I guess I'll just have to come up with something original. Awesome model, I'de love to see it move.

Happy new year!
Thanks again for all the comments!
Here's the loew res mesh I used.

low res base.JPG

Because I just wanted to do a bust, and not an animated model, I decided to avoid speparated arms, its just a one piece blok sculpted. Every pieces are sculpted, I prefered to avoid multimarkers for this time.

Hey Jantim! My material is very simple, nothing compaired to your wonderfull materials... Its just a simple shiny material, afected by a small noise and painted color.

The skinpores are a combination of alpha pattern dropping, spray drawing, and simple drawing for extra fine details, like wrinkles etc...

The render is done 100% in Zbrush, as usual, except the background added in photoshop.

Heres a close up of the helmet, its took rather long time to paint all the details, because I didnt sculpted and painted in same time :

And here's the final untextured version :

To thank you all for the kind feedback, here's my new year gift :
download the low res mesh+ the normalmap to watch it in realtime in your 3D programm or realtime engine.
This way you will have a better view of the details (according the size of the texture).

LordRth.jpg

Its based on maya normals rendering, if you want to see it properly in max viewport, using metal bump shader, you will ne to do a reverse of the green channel in photoshop.
Enjoy!

if you do renders in realtime engine (doom, half life...), you can post some screenshoots, I dont know those engines and I'm curious of how it render...

Theres a free normalmap viewer from cryteck (farcry), you can download it at :

http://www.crytek.de/downloads/index.php?sx=polybump

I was wondering what settings you used for the material on the eyes. I have been able to get good color but I have been having alot of problems making a good eye material. Thanks a lot. Those eyes are amazing!

Hey Sebcesoir,

Been checking out your site, and I have to say I love your work.
Was wondering if you could direct me to a tut that explains how you achieved the morphing in the Nuranim avi. Ive looked around and done some tests but havent had total success... Maybe Im looking for the wrong thing.

Anyway, and help would be great.

Great work.

Abyssis, I used winrar 3.43 to compress it.
Do you you use winrar to unrar it? If yes, try to get the latest version, or redonload it...

Pilou, I will make a smakll tutorial to display normalmap in 3ds max, with a very good shader.

Ok : I've made a small tutorial to display normalmaps in max, in realtime in the viewport.

Hey Sebcesoir did u use the bump material for the pores and wrinkles or did you just sculp? Also, which method is better to create the pours and wrinkles?

Sebcesoir
02-23-06, 05:01 AM
I would say it depend of your machine power, and you rfinal rendering : if you pc can handle super high level, I would suggest to sculpt it.
If your pc can't, you have the solution to paint a bump, but sometime its not handy to work and also render mix of clor and bump.
Thats why I would recommand to do it mostly for extrnal render.

couldnt i just sculpt the pours then turn them into a displacement map. Also then turn the displace map into a bump map?

Sebcesoir
02-23-06, 05:27 PM
thats it, but use the mid level to generate the displacement to be used as bump.

http://www.crytek.de/downloads/index.php?sx=polybumpThis is very quick and dirty, with a proper specular and diffuse map it would look a hundred times better. For the diffuse map I quickly painted one in flat colours. The skin is one solid shade of pink except for the lips being slightly darker, and the metal is just two colours, a blue for the base and orange for the extrusions. The specular is just a contrast-increased version of the diffuse. If you feel like releasing low resolution versions of your specular and diffuse go right ahead. ;)

Wow A truly amazing! model Sebcesoir.

But i Have two questions to ask you, which i would greatly appreciate if you answered (that is if you have time)

How do you position the details with such accuracy and how do you make the Alphas for the details (Do you make them in Zbrush or Photoshop etc...)?

hehehehe
