View Full Version : new metal materials

i made some metal materials that can be used for old & rusty mechanical parts.
The "eroded" version is a simple variation on the "noise"and "noise -radius "..in S2...i decided to post them both so you can use them together !
mecha03rusty.jpg

and the eroded version, this material "destroy's" most of the small detail making it look more...eroded.

mecha03eroded.jpg

and the materials !

.................................................. .................................................. .......

I've made a small update on my bronze..the "old" bronze had a tiling fault in S4.. and now that i have your attention its not a bad idea to correct this !

I've never given 5 stars for a material before , but as this one is so stunning I do belive it deserves it! I agree that there really should be a thread just containing Jantims wonderous materials!! I'm shocked this hasn't been done already.

This material makes me want to go and make rusty metal things. :D

tHANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR REACTIONS....i'm an iron-lover myself so what can i say other then : "Here's another one..." ...i tweaked this one from a stone like material, but now it looks kinda metaly .

and i posted the light settings that i use the most in test-rendering materials

..and every part of all the renders is made and renderdered in Zbrush..

Again thanks for your reactions , dear Zbrushers :tu: ..and for your renderings using the materials..now i'm just waiting to see the rendering that made Bas so many Euro's...if only i had known ...;)
To answer some questions : Ron : I render at 1280 -960 , set my sample at 8
and antialiasing at 1 or 2..in using the material you can't do anything wrong , i think..but perhaps in using more models that are angular and my "snake-oil" :"the black fog "..you can make an image more interesting !
Frenchy : The only material i set out to make was the bronze-material, the wood-material was an happy accident using the noise-curve ..settings..the rest is just a variation on the bronze -cavity shader-, and the wood - noise curve tweaking...but it is a lot of work to get it right !..the look of a material is also influenced by the size of the image and the settings for supersample and antialiasing...and using a surface-bump image is often a bad idea ..it can make the image look flat !
.................................................. .................................................. ..

in this material i use a surface bump image to control the amount of color\paint in the material in S4...and the color of the material in the cavity-color modifier in S3...there is some noise in the material but you can use bigger texture-maps in the color modifiers of the material .metaal01.jpg

Announcement:

I'm pleased to annouce that Jantim has agreed to let me host all of his materials in one place over at my site. This should make it easier for everyone to download any they are missing etc.. There's still a couple missing (as far as I am aware), one will be up later today, and Jantim's said he's going to redo his bronze material. As such I'll wait till he's got that up before putting it on the site.

Registrations required, but it's free, easy and really just to help counter spam and hotlinking (thus stealing bandwidth) from my site. If anyone is aware of any I've missed let me know and I'll be sure to add them.

Click on the material (or other file) that you want. Then just hit the download button. But remember you must be logged in. you can alos add them to a 'lightbox' which basically means when your finished it will zip everything you've added to it into one handy file for download.

Jantim,
Whoa dude you've done it again!!! Thank you so... much for sharing! One question; what resolution did you do your rendering, the AA looks sweet!

jantim
12-18-05, 01:41 AM
Hyper1:..... Thanks, ..the documentsize was 1280x960, blur 100,edge 100, samplesize 7, supersample 1, and i used renderdephtcue intensity 100, softnes 3
and fog with intensity 84, color black .
I sometimes use a lower samplesize and a supersample of 2 or 3, but this depends on the material i use, some materials look better with high samplesize and some just lose detail with higher settings .

...and some very cool modeling too (I mean considering I wouldn't have a clue
how to do that "hardbody" stuff in ZBrush

Can anybody point me to some good tutorials about how to create such complicated materials ? I mean I don't know much about them...hell I just discovered that those color buttons at the bottom of the material window
actually control something :)

And thanks for the look under the bonnet !!!

12-18-05, 11:42 AM
That's a good model of a head ,Tortilla 1...as for material making ..there must be some tutorials on this site..but you learn most by changing slidersettings on a material and see what changes and how these changes affect other channels..that the way i did it!..as for "hardbody " stuff,...you can get some interesting models by making a 3D model from an Alpha-image..just use" Alpha make 3D" from the alpha-palette ..and if the model is to "puffy" use a negative inflate to make it "harder.
This is the model made fom the alpha thats on the image

Lemmo,Zworg, Gorilla...thanks....and great that you a making materials Lemmo !
Dangerweenie,..there's no complexity in Zbrush, it just eats those poly's like candy...there is not so much planning in these rendering as you might think !
The idea was to make a "sort of "machine..so i used pre-made primitive's and "alpha made 3D" stuff, i started bringing it in the scene piece by piece, no multi-marker stuff, i used the lights that i posted in this thread, and i used black fog to hide the things a bit in the background..i made the images for showing the materials, so i used only one layer ...and that all !..its all made " on the fly" there was no planning for the image .

Well, i'm enjoying ZB3 like most of you- crappy, for all of you Mac-heads:cry: -and i'm playing with the new Silo !
I lose/spend a lot of time tinkering with the MatCap materials...and as most of you i have made a lot of great looking plasic- and waxy looking materials, metals and wood materials are kinda tricky, i think you need more shaderchannels for that sort of stuff.
And i'm giving most of my ZB2 models an overhaul with the new brushes, if i decide to post it will be a material or a complete scene...got some idea's,but i have stacks of books i must read also, and a lot of DVD's to watch :)

you can render this material in the BPR..but you have to use a trick-at least on my laptop....first you do a best render, and with the render on the screen do a BPR..if you do a BPR first it will look as you can see on the picture below

how-to-render-BPR.jpg

.....
A is a BPR render, B is the best render and C is the best render followed by a BPR render
