The unified skin method will not work for what you are doing. The unified method uses a detail threshold. If the detail is smaller than the threshold level, that detail is lost.

Either use adaptive skinning, or increase the size of the smaller spheres so that they are larger than the threshold.

Personally, I would recommend adaptive skinning for this. In addition, you can press the A key while you work to preview the adaptive mesh. So you'll know what you are going to get BEFORE you skin it.

With unified skinning, points and fine detail are lost quickly. So to alleviate this make the finger spheres bigger. Also you can set the SMOOTH slider just above the MAKE UNIFIED SKIN button to zero. This will help as well.
