Hi there,
this is my first post here at ZBrush central. i got a WIP post of this at CGtalk, but thought i would get some other Z users opinion. its a bloody amazing programme!!! havnt regreted getting it at all!
this is a head i did the origonal topology in maya, and for this kind of character, theres no better programme than ZB to do the detail and texturing, then rendered it using MiSSS in maya...let me know what you think.

I think its pretty well done baker, you may need to take some alphas and rough up his face some more but well done :) hmmm it may be the texture isnt allowing the alpha work you have already done show better.

Really cool work thus far. I only have a few suggestions (for what they are worth).
The head seems a little small from the eye line up. The eyes usually sit on the equator of the face. This can be hard to see because the hairline often makes us think the eyes are higher up on the head than we think. Perhaps a bit more forehead. The distance from eye line to the bottom of the chin should be roughly equal to the distance from eye line to the point of the head.
I think the eyes are a little far apart. Usually, most of us have a space between the eyes which is roughly equal to the with of the exposed eyeball from corner to corner (or something close to that I believe).
The meat around the nostrils seems a bit puffy too (IMHO). Perhaps a bit of subtlety here?

thanks for the replies guys! some good feedback
tartan- i think the SSS softens up those pores i did in ZB, so, gonna look at making more, and deeper in areas, glad you like it.
pointpusher- some nteresting points,
i do think the eyes are too far apart, definitly. that should fix the other issues you have, i dont want it to start looking too perfect, there are alot of flaws in anatomy of most people, and its what makes them characters...but thanks...
...i will do some adjustments this arvo and post then, working on a project for a music vid, so im up to me eyeballs...but i'll keep this thread up.
thanks again

havnt worked on thig guy in a while.
started playing around with hair, i was definitly going for this kinda hair style, suites him. but the eyebrows still need some work, and the hait is possibly too white.
let me know what ya think
im still going to do some clothes just the bust though, and eyelashes!!
Digory.jpg
The heair is really giving him more character, Maybe a tad to white. Better than I have done to date keep at it! :tu:

latest updates...
...has taken a while, as i have had a little problem with the displacment map in maya for the shirt, but have sorted it now.
have toned down the hair so its not so white anymore, and also, he's missing an eyebrow WOOPS!! will fix that for next post.
this fellows name is PRof. Digory Fenton-Whicks, think its well suited, an old late 18th century professor.
let me know how you think he;s coming on. he is only going to be a bust, as there is alot of detail goin on for his blazer, which i have started building.
oh, do you think his eyes are a little too light? would like to know your opinion on that.

There are people with eyes this blue, but they tend to look a bit "magical". His hair sort of looks like it has a static charge going around his head...maybe a little bit of a comb down. The face itself is very realistic with the folds, ect. And I look the fact you are adding some clothes to fit the personality! Keep up the fantastic work.

Thanks lynne-
much appreciated
i want to try get a bit of the crazy hair thing going with this guy,
but i agree, might be a little too statically charged
thanks for the feedback!
Hey Baker :)
I think he is coming along just fine. His hair does a look a little static charged but that can be fixed. I like his eyes. They give him individuality. Keep at it! :tu:
I also like the clothing you are adding here. Nice wip :)

hey all,
well, iw as experimenting with the render in ZBrush, and it turned out not so bad, thinkng of doing the final composition in ZB now.
here's the progress,
the maya render was a little dull, and his eyebrows and hair still need to be "de-electirified" but im thinkin of final composition, and quite liking the ZB render, let me know what you think.

Zbrushrenders have a nice "painterly" feel to it ....that should work for a portrait, i think...it looks better and more moody then the other renders !

Hi good job so far. Maybe you should try to darken eyes a little (the white parts as well). And maybe you could blur the hairstrands in post. They are a tad too grainy.
Looks good though!

well, im actually REALLY REALLY loving the results im getting out of ZBrush, so this is where im rendering the final image. using skin shader provided by ANTROPUS, and using my own light setups, just playin around here, but quite like the second result...now, onto the hair in ZB, which i havnt done before!!

That just plain rocks Baker and a very nice change of pace. Am glad to see the final. I kinda miss the electrified hair tho LOL :tu:

At the beginning of this thread I thought honoustly: Yikes and bah....realy, I didn't like the face or the person, if you like, who was staring at me.
But the first picture in your last post is wonderful! Great atmosphere and nice colours... from no stars to 5*****. Great job!!
Never let first sight come in your way...theres so much more behind every face.....
Thanks for sharing!

hey guys,
was wondering which lighting you prefered out of the 2nd image in my last post, to this one? im having trouble deciding...
..and also, painting the hair, if i use the deco brush, like antropus picasso tutorial, the strokes don't seem to be able to go off the model? is there something i missed in the tutorial that enables you to paint off the model, and obviusly all his hair wouldnt be stuck to him...any help would be appreciated.

I thought the hair ws just painted on...so it could go "off" the model...could have missed something. Good luck, it looks great.

well, here it is
TA DAH...the final image....and that hair took ages!! but what an amazing programme, i really cant say enough about it, this final came out exactly how i was hopeing...and ofcourse, nothing is perfect, so if there are any further comments, please feel free.
so Professor Digory Fenton Whicks is his name, and the first complete model, and image for my reel!!
hope you enjoy.

That last render did it justice Baker and brought out his character in full :D :tu: I think it is a nice start for your reel and hope it leads to prosperity in the future :)
