This is a character from a tutorial I completed for 3D World magazine. It steps through my current workflow and outlines an approach that utilizes multiple meshes within ZBrush. 3D World should post the entire step-by-step tutorial on their site sometime in the near future. Hope some of you find it helpful.

Very cool Zack. Gotta ask, where'd the idea come for this guy?
Also, just finshed your Gnomon DVD & was a real eye opener packed with some great stuff. Thanks for making it.
Anyway, always fun & food for the brain to see your work, take care.

Hi Zack,
I like your style, it's very interesting to see that you work with a very low cage.
Are the teeth a separate piece? And render you with the Maya standard
renderer or with mentalRay?
PS: Your DVD is great stuff.

yaaarrgh, if i knew how to read, i'd get that magazine.

I love the image with the toon outline and the other image faded into the back, it really is rather creepy. You and Geiger starting to share nightmares Zack? ;)

Amazing stuff. Cool to see your tut in the magazine (there's a Meats wire tut by the dude himself too). Interesting to see your advice in the mag that one should learn the insertion points of the muscles and memorize their names. I'm going to set myself to do exactly that. Thanks! :tu:

Man, you never fail to inspire. Zack, you are far an away one of my favorite digital sculptors. Please keep up the inspiring work, and I'll be picking up a copy of the mag tomorrow if I can find it.

Intense image, great skill and imagination, incredible anatomy!!! Love your work. :tu: :tu: :tu: :tu: :tu:
Is the mesh setup in the facial zone animatable through displacement maps? or is it just for a non-animated still?

God those hands are Baroque! : D So incredibly expressive and full of tension. I like this piece a lot, there really is something disturbing to it!
Inspiring as always!

Zack, congratulations on making it into the latest 3DWorld:D The tutorial is great and its really nice to get a chance to follow how amazing zbrush artists like you and Meats work. I havent peeped the video tuts on the CD but Ive been devouring your walk through in the mag. Awesome stuff!
What's the number of that 3DWorld magazine ? ..its alway's a bit late to arrive in the Netherlands !
Your model looks perfect-as alway's- but i still think you need exeptional anatomical skill to craft such a model from such a low-poly cage..it can't be done by most of us poor mortals !!

what i find outstanding about this piece, besides the obvious amazing modeling, is the thick black outline around the character. i'm very much a fan of this approach when it come to illustrative pieces. is this going to be in the magazine or just on the web? i just got a job at borders books so DISCOUNTS FOR EVERYONE!!!

Nice to see you finally post this up. :D
If you don't mind, Zack, can you post a close up of the face? Will the 3D world mag have the other images that you had at the Gnomon Workshop?
Keep on inspiring dude!

Jantim,
Its issue #72, the one right after the issue with the XBOX logo on the cover. We get 3DWorld late in the states as well but if you subscribe, you can usually get the mag the same week it is released in the UK. Well worth doing and youll save $ too.

Loved the tutorial man, love the model too. One of the best 3D World tutorials. It's really great that you include the models too.
I've really got to try this technique soon.
Thank's for the info , Mecha Hate Chimp !...i had a subscribsion on it ,but its not a cheap magazine and i 'm not interested in all it's articles..but i'm gonne buy this one !

Amazing! I have to agree with Scott, very expressive though they reminds me though of Grunevald (sp?), a germanic northern renaissance artist.

Thanks. This was really just a good excuse to try to define the process of using multiple meshes in ZBrush. I think my next sculpt will be a turning point if I don't screw it up. I like the options this process created and the freedom it allowed.
Answering questions:
The teeth and fingernails are just sculpted into the low res mesh. Don't be afraid to make the mesh overlap itself at this stage, i.e. pulling the lips down over the teeth.
For this design sculpt, the face is not animatable per se. You could however get away with a little movement.
Regarding the "outline" around the character, it doesn't work the way I would like it to relative to the background yet, but I think this was a good failure that got me a little closer to the correct answer.
The CD that comes with the magazine should have all the step-by-step high res images and a few .ZTL files at various stages of completion.
There is a step in the tutorial that speaks directly to the hands. For me, that step illustrates the most important point of the entire article. Its all about the foundation, the gesture, the proportions, the rhythms. (same old crap I'm always talking about) They come long before any details get added to the mesh, and they are much more important. You can look at the low res poly cage, even on the second level of division, and see if the hands are going to work.

per se...or so to speak?
hi Zac,
looks really great as usual
what renderer engine did you use for this ?
thks
modeling is top notch. love the black contour, really gives strength to the piece, makes it vibrate as you look at it. great work, waiting for more.
WTF??? how come this piece is not yet in the featured gallery????
