Excellent photorealistic work here, Mike.

I'm sure it is actually the caterpillar of Papilio machaon, the Swallowtail Butterfly. This is a protected species in many European countries, including England where it clings on in a few colonies in the East Anglian fens. I have been lucky enough to have one fly right past me only a foot or so away while on holiday in the Norfolk Broads. You have captured it's caterpillar perfectly. :tu: :tu: :tu:

Incidentally, you may find the alternative English name of "larva" easier to remember than "caterpillar", as it is almost the same as your German word. Furthermore it is applicable to the early stage of all holometabolous insects - i.e. those that have egg, grub-like, pupa (or chrysalis) and mature adult life stages, so including moths, flies, beetles, etc.
