Here I will place the doodles I make while exploring ZB. This was a head and something went wrong, real wrong. But I did like the shape and went on.

AHHH NIICE!

I really like this (call me twisted, well yeah I am but) This reminds me of the old 19th century etchings of birth defects and other anomolies.
really nice Bas!

I was watching a show the other day consisting of early medical museum and preserved works, this would fit right in with some of the exhibits of mutated births for cows, chickens, goats, people.

The ones done of human anatomy with real human parts coated in a unkown liquid that preserved them for all time were creepy beyond belief. ;)

So, great work!!

Thanks for replying. I was working on a head and testing some wrinkles in projectionmaster. With a real big brush, Zadd but with the wrong alpha the upper part of the head jumped in my direction at the z-axes, leaving the rest behind. I inflated the needles, pushed and smoothed them and went on texturing. After rendering it 3 times it was composed in Photoshop.
Here is the head before it went wrong/good.

Wow, Bas! I stop paying attention to anything 3D for a while, turn back around, and you impress the living crap out of me with your awesome work.

I know people are gonna get sick of seeing me say this, but I feel imagination is lacking in the 3d world. It's work like yours that's inspiring me to better use my imagination. Hopefully your ideas can inspire others to use their imagination as well.

Great work!

Sometimes I get the feeling I have to buy also more software to explore. The danger of it is loosing creativity. Give me a pencil and a paper and I do the same things like I do with software. The border between being an artist and a tech always stay. But, I've seen a lot of good traditional work from people who started with 3d, trying to learn how to use the software. Go on exploring 3d and find a way to use it. Do not use the expected results but push it in the direction the way you like it as an artist. Keep going for the best! The best work you can make is without thinking!

pieces look great! what are you rendering in? the 3rd image you posted looks amazing!

Bas Mazur
10-29-05, 05:56 AM
Deity, the last image is a ZBrush render. I only pushed up the colors in Photoshop.
ZBrush does not work well with the colormanagment on my computer. Working in ZBrush the colors look bright and nice, but after import to photoshop they are gray and dull. I did nt find a button to choose the right colorprofile. Anyone??

deity
10-29-05, 08:47 AM
looks great for a zbrush render, the photoshop. any chance I could still the lighting setup from ya if you still have it and the material if you used one? ;)

Bas Mazur
10-29-05, 12:46 PM
Deity, that last render was just a standard lightning and the material was a sokar-skinmaterial a little changed anf fine tuned for my needs.

aminuts
10-29-05, 03:41 PM
nothing in zbrush bas, but you can start photoshop without the color management on. photoshop definitely doesn't like zbrush stuff with any colormanagement stuff I have tried to I just leave it off and only use em when I need em for something else.

Bas Mazur
10-29-05, 04:45 PM
Aminuts, mostly my work is printed and it needs colormanagement. It starts in the system with a monitorcalibration and is linked to all my programs. Also my scanner and printer are using a colorprofile. But I think you know about these things. I hope there will be an option in the new update to choose a profile. I tried to set it off, but the colors are as dull as before. Every program is using a kind of standard profile and I do not know wich one ZB is using. When using ZAppLink there is also a big difference between the colors. So when I import the ZB picture in PhS I should do it without colormanagement, after it I like to print it and I have to choose a profile to get the colors I see in my monitor, the colors are changing. The same as posting something here, I need a profile to avoid getting a reply like:'I like the picture but it was too dark and the sky was too green'. grrrr.

Bas Mazur
10-29-05, 05:08 PM
Here is an update of the head. I used a 'single-wrinkle-alpha' to make the skin. This was not a quick doodle because it took some time to get the right lights. One pass-render in ZB. Only a curve-adjustment in Photoshop.

Beautiful man... It's just impressing me more and more.

I did a search for the sokar skin shader on the forums and found some links. I downloaded the one from Dickie's Imp but it looks all messed up in my viewport with a really blown out saturation. I am I just not using it right or are there some settings you have to tweak to get it to look right because I can't even get the settings to work anywhere near what you guys have.

Rock on,

I wonder bas if recording and saving actions would help ya in ps. If you are mostly having to deal with curves and they are somewhat constant everytime...perhaps saving actions then using them first will save you a bunch of time...then just some tweaking for individual pics. ?? Here I doodled with the DecoBrush. I used a 'brushalpha' with variations in Z-intensity and rgb-intensity. I also worked in two layers so they cover eachother when the Z-depth grows. Using Z-sub can easy wipe out the highest color.

10-30-05, 01:46 PM
Excellent picture Baz! One for the top row!

ZBrush hasn't had it's fair share of exploration with natural media emulation, but I think you've just hit the nail on the head!!!

Any chance you could knock out a small script that would demonstrate this process??

Love this!

Upham :)

Bas Mazur
10-30-05, 02:11 PM
Upham, I should like to make a script but try it first. Take any alpha or that brush alpha. Set rgb-intensity what you like. Z-depth between 90 or 100. Make a sketch on the first layer. It will look flat and not interesting. Activate the second and go on. You will see you get the structure of the lines made in the first layer. Go up and down with the pixols. Keep switching between the layers. I hope this can help you on the track.
btw, you can also use different materials, but that's step 2. Render without shadows!

Beautiful work, highest respects Bas.

You mentioned earlier:

"Sometimes I get the feeling I have to buy also more software to explore. The danger of it is loosing creativity."

In terms of losing creativity with new software, maybe an analogy would be that you would be learning to play a new (musical) instrument.
You know the music, but until you know the new instrument completely, you wouldn't be able to play freely and "without thinking",
We can't just give a flute to a child and say, "now play me a pretty song". That takes time, of course, to learn.

Your feeling to need more software to explore, well that would depend on what you would like to use it for...
Seems the software you are using now is more than enough for the imagery you are creating. Very powerful.
If you wanted to animate, then yes you would need another soft too for now, and you could learn that.
But do you want to?
If yes... you could do it.
If no...well just keep jamming on your instrument! :)

May every post be a great one Bas...

and congrats! (gefeliciteerd?)

Thanks for the kind reply. I was surprised to see the TR, because it was a realy fast doodle. It is fun to use 3d in combination with an expressive way of working. Almost everything is possible. ZBrush is like a big egg, keeping it warm something comes out.
joe_seig, maybe you are right about the instument. With the new update that guitar gets new strings to play with. But sometimes I miss the real 3d space to work with. In ZB it's hard to setup a light with natural shadows. When I see the hairs at your Melanin dude or looking at nice sss-materials... I should like to see a 'real 3d layer' at the top of the 2.5D base with a list of objects where we could select an object to drop it in 2.5D or keep it with a displacementmap in the upper layer.

Here is another doodle after digging in the dusty holes of ZBrush. I had no intention to make a 'Meats' but playing with the SingleLayerBrush and the MorphTool I just found a better and faster way to make the wires. It is more easy now to play with alpha's and other brushes in combination with this technic. Call it the MazurWireTechnic  Also a script.

Lemonnado, just an evening... hahahaha
If you know how many time I spend to reach the dusty holes of ZBrush..., now I try to clean it up. Man what a programm!! I remember I made a full color production on a Mac SE (monochrome display), writing down the colors I used. It seems ages ago.
Ron, courious as you are, always you find the things to play with. Keep going friends!

lol Bas....yeppers....if I dont play then I dont have fun and then I dont learn....so if a=b and b=c then a=c =Fun

Question.....I have ran this script about a dozen times now...works fine, but I dont understand after you make the morph target and it seems to suddenly swith to the Single Layer brush when you are applying the "paint".... then you hit the Create Difference Mesh....how do you switch to the Single layer brush and still remain in edit mode? I put show actions on and slowed it down to 96 but I am not understanding how you accomplished this... I am sorry, I know this is a simple thing....thnx in advance, Bas or anyone that can answer or direct me on what to do..

I made a grouped object and imported it in ZBrush. Divided it and sculpted it. I had to keep the lowest subdivisionlevel to export with a displacementmap for animation. After sculpting there is a way to add or replace an object without loosing all the work done in ZBrush.
I hope you can use it when you need it

this is truly beautiful work. the beauty of zbrush is the way that alpha patterns can be used to carve a figure. i've found that it's relatively easy to make just any figure look good (i said, relatively) by doing this. this is a true example of a model that not only uses them well, but uses them masterfully.

That's what CreateDiff does. It functions like "Subtract" operations when using Constructive Geometry in other modelers. The resulting polygon model is a closed mesh.

And BTW, that is a totally killer way to make helmets, why didn't I think of it? :)

Here is another painted 2.5D head of the same object. This one is painted in two layers with a brush made from a brushstroke from Rembrandt. Using this alpha with the Deco Brush, a little Z-add in combination with a material with some cavity, there is a lot of fun to get.

Tartan, I'm always surprised by the things we can do with ZB. Mostly I start doodling around and something comes out of it. Most of this kind of things are just a short time on my HD, after the fun I delete them.
Plakkie, my background/education, I started painting after I was born, only the academy was a short delay :-)

Hey BAz , explain me more about the flower guy ! Tut ? Tut?

I'm also a MAC totally depressed by the announce of Pixo, but still I beleive that they will do something for us, and I like my Mac.... so much. But I was waiting for so long, and now the Vista, Xp PC boyz can do Zbrush3 and ZMapping !!!! That's unfair..... I remember, the first version of Zbrush for both systems came together, now this politic change a bit....

I like some big company like Blizzard ltd, always they come with both applications or games for PC and MAC.

As Zbrush is one of my favorite tool, also Cheetah 3d (like the rendering engine, "it will be a very good software this year", already have done some great render in term of quality and time spending with radiosity and all the stuff...), and many other tools in 3d , I'm really still depressed and in creation I need to put this anger and frustration to continue my creation in Zb2... that's uncool........ difficult... grrrr...arghhh

Bas Mazur
05-20-07, 07:56 AM
There is not much to say about the workflow. Here is a little doodle just to explain.
I started with a ring and a monster. Used the snakehookbrush, changed materials and painted rgb with alpha's. After rendering I baked the layer, changed the head and painted again with rgb, zadd and zsub.
Have fun!

Doodling around with layers. In this thread I used several layers to paint the parts. I used Zapplink to paint the background. It is great to switch between ZB and Phs! After the final render there is a lot you can do with changing colors and extra layers.
