View Full Version : Monday Night Challenge 5 Z-flowers and glass

Monday Night Challenge
First off, there are no winners and no losers. This is not a contest. It's a chance for everyone to take one idea and see how many different ways it can be done. A chance to share tips.

Each Monday night (in irc chat. Server - irc.sorcery.net port 9000 room zbrush3) the person who issued the challenge the week before, selects a new person to come up with a theme… random choice, picking a name out of a hat, throwing a dart whatever. It's not decided by who did the best picture (that keeps the playing field level for all.)

For those who might not like that only people who can get in irc can get the chance to choose a theme, We're sorry, but it was decided that it was the only way to ensure that a theme would be announced that night. Also, it's good to discuss a theme with the group to work out the details.
Note: if for some reason the person who's to select the new person doesn't show up, a name will be drawn. (This is to make sure there is no hold up on the challenge. This also ensures no one person can derail that week.)

Everyone is encouraged to participate. Give a quick description of what you used to create the image… or a detailed indepth lesson is most welcome, but not mandatory. This is to be fun, not hard work.

ok with that out of the way.....our new person to put out the challenge idea of the week is from the one and only Joe (DEEVEE)

<LI>Joe has challenged us this week to do a flower scene with glass.

<LI>It is pretty much open for interpretation, but the scene must have flower(s) and glass present.

<LI>It must also all be done in Zbrush completely. The reason being that we are doing these to stretch our Z creativeness
http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/zbc_uploads/user_image-1038304001utf.jpg (http://www.pixolator.com/MNC/5/index.html)
So break out the thinking caps and get busy.
:D

Thanks to Pixolator, we will now have a gallery. If you want your image included add

Looking forward to seeing what people come up with this thread. Glass has always been hard to figure out.

The table is a squashed cube 3D with a hand drawn texture tiled along the width with draw/perspective added.
The glass is a cylinder 3D with a large inner radius, the material shown and draw/perspective added - it was quite tricky to place but the 'reflection' on the table was a pleasant accident. :)
The water is another cylinder with the jellybean material with upped transparency.
The flowers are stretched cylinders for the stems and sweep profiles for the buds.
I added some post refraction effects with the simple brush which aren't too hot but add a bit of realism to the material.
Hope this was of interest.

Ok, here's a little doodle. I'm still having problems with transparancy. My final render never turns out how I expected , so I still have to figure that out a bit.
And another question , it says the scene has to contain a glass , is a bowl alright too ?
The transparacy issue already involves the water so do I really need a glass ? http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/zbc_uploads/user_image-1037712032ybm.jpg

Very interesting images so far. you need glass! the bowl could be glass or you may care to add some other item,

This is my first try at this week's challenge!
Method:
Drapes:
:b2: Stoke Pallette # 6 line
:b2: alpha brush # 11
Table:
:b2: Cube 3D
:b2: gradient map
These were saved and a new document opened.
Vase:
:b2: SweepProfile 3D
:b2: shape as you wish.
:b2: For trasnparency under Draw, Z intensity and z intensity set to 30. Use whatever colour you wish.
:b2: material GelShaderA
Flowers:
:b2: Brush #07
:b2: Hook Brush
:b2: Arrange flowers as desired.
I am sure there is an easier way to acomplish the same results, but this is how this image was done. I hope the information is helpful to someone.
DeeVee,
Joe.

Really good Mik. Thanks for the walkthrough to.
Namek really like the idea. Remember to get the material transparancy to work you have to unflatten the layers (in the render pallet) I'm sure other tips will come up in this thread.

DeeVee love the flowers and vase. Really nice.

DeeVee
11-19-02, 10:53 AM
Thanks Debs. Which one of the vase's do you like best?
DeeVee,
Joe.

DLee
11-19-02, 11:15 AM
Dee, the one with the flowers. The bottom looks a little small though. Like it's about to tip over. Maybe just flatten it would work better.

The other one is nice, but appears a little flat. With flowers maybe it would help. Not sure. Still, very bright and colorful. I like it. ~s~

DeeVee
11-19-02, 11:32 AM
The bottom is very heavy so it will not tip over :) It was specially made to give that impression :) :D Thanks for the comments.

Well here it is. My biggest project yet. Larger than usual and 6 layers. Nothing on this was hand drawn, all the objects including the flowers and leaves were modelled:
Vase modelled out of a sphere
Candles from the cylinder
Candle holders from a sphere
Flowers using a sweep tool, and multimarkers to make a composite. Leaves also from a sweep tool.
Water from a sphere.
Table from a cube
And the poles from a cylinder.

Whew! Believe me - for me this was indeed a challenge since I will try to get out of modelling if I can as I don't do it so well. But the practice is certainly helping!

:p

Thanks again.

Ok, well here is a very quick Zscript. I am not great at making them so I apologize for the repeated renders. It seems that glass doesn't show transparency properly if the underlying layer is blank. So I drew in some coloured balls to show the transparency better.
Hope it is helpful. The trick is to play with the specular and the ambient until you get the effect you are looking for.

I feel honoured to be able to post this. :)

Beautiful work Northstarr - if this is what you can achieve modelling when you "don't do it so well", you're going to be downright intimidating when you've got the hang of it!!! :D The glass on that central vase is outstanding. :tu: :tu: :tu:

And thank you for the script. Haven't had time to run it yet, but I look forward to doing so tomorrow.

WOW Ron! This could be my favorite piece of yours yet...very well done, especially the flames on the candle. And Northstarr's glass candlesticks are too too good.

No respect intended toward DeeVee, but I hope nobody ever picks flowers for a challenge again...this was so hard!!! First of all, I am not into flowers, so I could not for the life of me think of how to arrange them or even what they look like. I went web surfing to find some arrangements for inspiration. Well, here is probably my LAST flower pic ever... ;) :D .....Brian

And MB, I also love your rose! It too is very beautiful especially the red rose against the snow. (I hope it's snow!)

Also, wanted this on a window with light coming through. Couldn't figure out the lighting. So here you go. Hope you enjoy!

Finally got one done before the deadline.

I started by placing a plane on one player at a 60 degree angle on the X-axis. I then colored it in with the spray-brush stroke. Then I drew grass on top of it with the fiber-brush using the grass texture available in the Texture pallette.

The "trumpet-like" part of the daffodils was created using a sweep profile and then I pushed and pulled at the top edge with radial symmetry as well as adding some detail with the draw pointer. The petals were made from a gear3d tool and the things inside the flower were made from a sweep profile as well. I then multi-marked them and then made a polymesh out of a single daffodil flower which I then placed in the scene.

The leafy parts were made with a flattened sphere tapered on both ends and the stems were made from an adaptive skinned ZSphere.

For the glass part of the magnifying glass I placed it on the canvas and pressed 3Dcopy and then enlarged the object in the transform pallette to give it that "magnified" look. The bee was made from a unified skinned ZSphere and hand was made from a unified skinned ZSphere, as well.

I used an overhead sunlight with a shadow aperature of 180 as well as a shadowless overhead sunlight and a greenish sunlight comming from the bottom to simulate light reflecting off the grass.

Well, I did make a start on this one, but it was quickly obvious that it was going to take more time than I could spare at present, so I'm a no-show I'm afraid. (Got me a half-decent vase pretty quickly, but modelling the flowers was another story altogether.)

But just wanted to post to say what a great set of images this has produced. Irrespective of the claims of difficulties many of you have claimed to experience, it doesn't show in the results. Excellent stuff.

I love this challenge so much that I just couldn't resist doing another one. The image just popped into my head and I simply had to do it!! The roses have just a hint of transparency. They were created from a rose that I drew for an alpha, then made 3D and used as a tool.

Another challenge I nearly missed, or did I?

R.Wilco's last resting place:

After a very short ceremony, what had been found of R.Wilco was laid to rest beneath the Alturian soil. That consisted of an Astrosuit, reeking of sweat and cheap aftershave, a Laser pistol ( where someone had obviously gnawed at the hilt ), a half eaten Mighty Bar and a standard issue Helmet.

Meanwhile, 1/4 light year away, Roger Wilco is on double duty mopping the kitchen floors, having just tried to explain why he returned back to base in his birthday suit.

(Anyone remember Space Quest?)

http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/zbc_uploads/user_image-1038254949plw.jpg [GalleryEntry]

Helmet is made with Zspheres(Uniform skinning), Visor is a standard Box resized and deformed, Rocks are Sphere3Ds with texture Reflect4 applied as an alpha and inflated repeatedly, the pebbles were applied with spraystroke, Plane3D for the ground with additional details applied using the DepthBrush, the flowers were created using PusGhetty's method (thanks :tu: ), the sky is standard FlatColor material and lots of SprayStroke, Blurbrush and ColoriserBrush, for the (not-so-very-clear) transparency I used the CloneBrush to copy RGB info onto the Visor layer, Transparency was set to 100% although I did not render with transparency on ( it still has an effect on how the material looks).

Sorry for the quick and dirty info, I'm running out of time and laptop battery. Oh and ignore the fact that it is physically impossible to raise the visor :D

Edit: Forgot to add that I really enjoyed looking at all the entries this week. Lots of great images and , hey, flowers turned out to be a pretty cool MNC subject DeeVee :D :tu:
