The Start
Using zbrush to develop the base character

Then Maya to develop the dynamics (had to lose the zbrush hair);)

Then back to zbrush for morphs

hey that was pretty kewl. Is his beard a 3d plane with weight maps(I think that is the term?)

The hair is a maya 7 dynamic. (fancy nurb curve) Then I scanned a white paintbrush for a more flowing grey striped look. And attached it as a hair texture.
