Continuing the Roadmap to ZBrush 2.5, Pixologic, makers of the award-winning program ZBrush, have released a new plug-in: ZApp Link.
ZApp Link is a free plug-in that extends and enhances ZBrush’s texturing and illustration capabilities by automating the connection with programs such as Photoshop, Painter, or Illustrator.
ZApp Link works with click-button ease and continues Pixologic’s commitment to providing innovative tools to support next generation artists forging the work of tomorrow.
Modeler and texture artist, Caroline Delen, says, “The ZApp Link is an excellent addition making it possible to project photographic reference or any painting directly onto your ZBrush viewport through Photoshop and has definitely become an important part of my workflow.”
Leigh van der Byl, Texture Artist at Cafe FX, says "ZApp Link is a fantastic feature that has helped to make my Photoshop/Zbrush texturing workflow more efficient and intuitive. It's a must-have tool. Pixologic is taking what is often an unintuitive, bothersome process and making it more accessible to artists who just want to get straight to the creative parts of texturing."
For a view of ZApp Link's abilities visit Caroline Delen's Artist in Action post here. (http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=28111)

Rev1 of ZApp Link relies on file associations within the operating system. Macintosh users who are experience problems with these file associations may want to download Rev2 of ZApp Link below:
:b3::b3::b3: (http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/Plugins/ZAppLinkRev2-Mac.zip)Click here to download Rev2 of ZApp Link for the Mac. (http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/Plugins/ZAppLinkRev2-Mac.zip):b3::b3::b3: (http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/Plugins/ZAppLinkRev2-Mac.zip)
Installing ZApp Link
Extract the zip file. Move the contents of the ZApp Link folder to the ZStartup/ ZPlugs directory. If there is no ZPlugs folder, create one.
Launch ZBrush
ZApp Link will place a button in your Document palette.
October 12th, 2005: Version 1 released
October 17th, 2005: Version 2 for Mac released
Using ZApp Link
:b3: Press ZApp Link in the Document palette
:b3: Choose your export settings
:b3: For Rev2 for the mac, the first time you run ZApp Link it will ask you to choose the program that you would like to edit your .PSD files with. You can change this later by going to your ZAppLinkData folder and altering the path in the ZAppExternatlEditor.txt file
:b3: If you are using Rev1, it will open the file with the program you have associated with .PSD files
:b3: In your .PSD editor, use whatever tools you need then save the document
:b3: Return to ZBrush and choose to accept the changes or return to the external editor for more changes
Note: The functionality of choosing your editor was added to the Macintosh version to address operating system issues. This functionality will be added to future versions of ZApp Link for the PC.
Please share any questions you may have or images that you have used ZApp Link to create in this thread. :)
:::::: A thread for Troubleshooting any problems that you might be having with ZAppLink has been added to the Questions & Troubleshooting forum. Please do not post such messages here. Post them in the Questions & Troubleshooting Thread (http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=29777) instead. Thanks! :)
Enjoy!

OMG thankyou! this is way too cool :)
Testing the Zapplink plugin on a Mac. It's opening every image program except Photoshop to edit the texture. Even w/ Photoshop open it wants to go to "Preview" or "ColorSync" etc. Can't get it to go to PS at all.
Am I doing something wrong???

thank you a lot for this plugin.
it is working well with photoshop elements, but as i am a heavy corel draw
and corel photopaint user i had no luck with those softwares.
the updated files where not accepted by zapplink.
any hints for me on how to get it working?
thanks,

Works great with Gimp.

Friggin amazing! Now I have to learn how to draw a paper bag in Photoshop!
But in 2 mins I created some cool textures with filters etc... I can only imagine what people will do with this, waiting to find out.

Hmmm, not too bad, but it doesn't work correctly with PhotoImpact. I have to save the changes in PI, and then head back to the program from Zbrush before the changes appear updated in Zbrush.
ZApp Link seems to work very well also with JASC Paint Shop Pro (at least version 8, which is what I have). I have the GIMP as well (actually a whole bunch of 2D apps now) but PSP is my preferred tool just by virtue of experience (was cheaper than photoshop before I ever knew about GIMP).
Thanks again for such a cool plugin, really adds to ease of use all around in 3d texturing.

Great work guys. An impressive addition and lots of potential. Thanks! :tu:
Fantastic Pixologic!! Works a dream and in my quick test it appears to kill seams more effectively than straight projection master work!
This is going to make workflow smoother by far! Great addition.
This is a greeeat improvement for zbrush. Thanks a lot pixologic for releasing it for free :D
Just a question. How would you tell zapplink to use photoshop as the editing program without making it the default app for psd files. In my case, Irfanview (a free image viewer) is the default app for all the image formats, and when i press the zapplink is not photoshop which opens the image, but irfanview.
Is there any way to change this?
Thanks guys, you are great!

This is great,
One thing thats needed now is to be able to bake out shader/lighting/colour detail into a set of uv coordinates.
To do this I use the material baker script, but its O so buggy!.
Plz pixologic give me better baking tools.....

Thanx Pixologic!!!! I experienced that Double-Clicking a PSD-File opens Preview on my Mac, so ZAppLink used Preview. To change this in OSX select get Info and change the "Open with ..." Attributes and apply to all of this Kind (PSDs). Hope this helps ...

Thank you. However, I'm getting some issues, which are probably down to me being stoopid. However, assuming I'm not the only one ... :o
:b3: Just for info .. ZApplink won't use Paintshop Pro, but is ok with PS Elements 1.
Update .. issues I had resolved thanks to Antimorph spotting my error in saving the script.

10-13-05, 04:13 AM
Hi Moochie, It looks like your directory structure is wrong. The .zsc needs to be in the ZPlugs/ folder (and not in ZAppLink/ where it is now). Similarly the ZAppLinkData folder needs to be in ZPlugs/ (and not in ZAppLink/ where you have it now). Looks like the extraneous ZAppLink/ folder got created when you extracted the zip.
I very big thankyou.

awsome... thank you so much
Am not an animation individual, so most of the new items
are not a big item to me.
Before Zbrush, large user of Photoshop.
Thank you very much for the ease with which they can both
be used now.
Wll have plenty to spend the Winter with.
Much appreciated.
Edit: Thanked you, before using.
HOly S--t!!!!!! Wow!!!!
Will consider this my Christmas Present from Zbrush.
Again, many thanks for something that will be used a lot.
its not working well with me, what am I doing wrong?
I open zbrush, open my model. go to projection master and choose colors with fade on (double sided on for the side view) then hit zapplink. photoshop opens, I paint the image the way I want. hit save and go back to zbrush and it asks if I want to update, I hit ok. it shows fine in projection master but when I pick it back up it changes and the colors are all blocky and its wrapped around my whole model rather then in the front like it should. am I missing something? thanks for any help.

Without samples hard to say. Check texture size, UV mapping, model subdivision, display property smooth settings... Play with the settings and see what changes.... You know... the IBM way... if you have a flat... keep changing tires and see if the problem moves with the change...
Lemo
Thanks Pixologic! Especially from another MAC user!
I am having the same problem some others are having though. When I run Zapplink, it goes to preview instead of PS. I already had all files set with the .psd to open in PS. Any ideas?
Thanks!

Doesn't work for me. I create a new texture, enter projection master>colour, open the zap link dialogue, choose an option and click OK, then I get an error saying "Error encountered while attempting to launch external editor". I have both photoshop 7 and CS2 on my system but CS2 is set to open psd docs.
OsX 10.4.2, 6gb ram, G5 dual 2.7
Any suggestions?
Thanks

Thanks, I think you may be right, but how do you go about finding an "unknown" file to change it?
Thanks!

1.-The PSD option in the ACDSee or similar program MUST BE disabled, to allow ZBrush take PSD with Photoshop.-
2.-Both ZAppLink and ZAppData MUST BE in the ZPLUGS folder, will not work IF only you have ONLY the ZappLink FOLDER containing both INSIDE.
3.-If you are working with Polymesh is better press first UV tiles before model and texturing process
4.-More division ALWAYS better results
5.-I made exercise beetwen ZBrush>Photoshop>DeepPaint3D and work very well.
6.-If you worek with parametric object ergo head model from Sphere3D your paint texture workflow is like a canvas snapshot more fluid.
Congratulations Pixologic Team

...absolutly kick ASS, Pixologic !
Just recieved my max8 package today, and i am embarrased about the minor changes they`ve done in such a major upgrade from 7.5 to 8.
Pixologic reall thinks about their updates ! !!! Great work, guys !
Absolutly outstanding !

3dj ...
i guess when you see PSDs that have no Thumb, i just changed the Settings twice, and then finally it worked out fine. Guess you gotta search for the bad filetypes that open in Preview ...

Yeah, I think I have found some. Some have the Preview icon on them, others may have an image icon, I have changed them and still no luck, restarted Zbrush as well.
You say you did it twice?

zbrush + photoshop = win.
OMG thanks.
Only the psd's in the Zbrush folders were marked with the preview icon and set to open in preview. I got info on all of these and I changed them to PS.
Works great now!

I'm having issues with ZApp Link on the Mac as well. I've tried setting all of my .psd files to open up in PhotoShop, but I still get "Error encountered while attempting to launch external editor". I hope you don't have to have both program in the Applications folder for this to work out. :(
All that being said, I do have a possible solution for Pixologic. Provide an option (weather it's a button or a preference window) to choose which image editor to open and it's location. This could be done for both on Mac and PC, and could be good for those of us that keep their apps on a different disk (like myself) or for folks use multiple image editors.
Just recieved my max8 package today, and i am embarrased about the minor changes they`ve done in such a major upgrade from 7.5 to 8.I disagree. Pelt mapping alone justifies the cost of admission -- it's an enormous workflow boost. But keep in mind, only subscription users are moving from 7.5 to 8 -- most of the userbase skipped 7.5 altogether and are looking at those features as part of the same upgrade.
None of which has anything to do with Pixologic, their accomplishment, or the care they show for their customers. So, let's stay on topic, shall we?
ZApp Link! Yay!!!

My issue is a minor annoyance. Sending to Photoshop using ZAppLink, opens PS, but doesn't load the image automagically. I tracked down where it was saving the image to, so I can drag it in manually, and then everything else works as expected.
PSD's are set to open with PS only, although when I first tried it, PSD's were associated with ACDSee, and ZAppLink opened the image into ACDSee with no problems.
Any suggestions? It is really minor and I can work around it, but it would be nice to skip the one manual step.
here is what its doing. I have tried max divide and lower on the model along with all the settings for the texture and am still getting the same thing. here is the images. first image is the photoshop paint, the 2nd is the pickup. also when I have the model to its higher sub divide and the texture at 4092 the program locks up.
Doesn't work for me. I create a new texture, enter projection master>colour, open the zap link dialogue, choose an option and click OK, then I get an error saying "Error encountered while attempting to launch external editor". Deity,
Try dropping your model down to the lowest subdivision level, re-apply AUV or GUV tiles, Assign a new texture of 1024x1024, and re run the test.
Looks like your UV's are completely jacked up.
I got it to work for the front view for the most part. I clicked uvp and it lined up correctly. the only bad thing is on the side view it looks like crap when I paint there and when I paint front view it still shows up on the back even though double sided is off. hope I can figure this out, so far I find it useless

I'm going to assume I goofed up trying to post so I'll try again. I'm basically having the same issues in 10.3. I'm hoping this isn't due to the need for both Zbrush and a favored image editing program to be located in the Applications folder of the Mac's boot disk. (As for myself, I have all of my apps on a separate hard drive.)
Now here's a possible solution for the next revision of ZApp Link for both Mac and PC, provide an option (a button or another window) to choose which app to link to. This should help cut down on the trouble shooting :P
Thanks anyway!

Hello all,
To set your file assocciations on a PC with Windows XP, right click on the file, mouse over "Opens With" and then select "Choose Program". The Opens with dialogue box sets the program of choice. Click the program that you want to be used by ZAppLink and also turn on the "Always use the selected program..." checkbox. When you click "OK" the file association will be changed and ZAppLink will begin to use the specified program.
In a Mac OS 10.4, in a finder window select the file, go to File: Get Info. In the Opens With section, choose the application of choice.
If you are not getting the texturing results you are expecting always check your UVs first. In the Texture palette, select No Texture. Then in the Tool palette in the Texturing sub-menu click UV check. If there are any red areas then you have overlapping uvs and this will cause problems in texturing.
To create a new set of UVs, go to the lowest resolution level, create a blank texture of the desired size (recommended sizes are a power of two, such as 512x512, 1024x1024, 2048x2048 and 4096x4096), then in the Tool>Texture sub-menu click either AUVTiles or GUVTiles.
Projection Master applies textures according to your UV map so unexpected results are most of the time a result of the UV layout. :)
If you are still having trouble using ZApp Link with a Mac or PC please send your system specs and problem to support@pixologic.com (support@pixologic.com). Please do not post your specs in this thread. The most direct route to support is via the email address above. It is imperative that we have as much information as possible so please be thorough. :)
Thanks!

for some reason when I installed the ZApp link plugin I can no longer import a texture, a mesh or Double the size of my canvas. It tells me "Sorry, this feature is not available in the Zbrush Demo". But i'm am not using a Demo copy of Zbrush, I have a licenced copy.
I am using Mac OSX 10.3.6
Anybody else using panther got it working?
I think the culprit maybe something to do with permmissions and privilelges
setting in the get info for MAC. Anybody else on MAc got it working after getting error. Changing the PSD to open with photoshop has not worked for me.
I think I've found why I got the error "Error encountered while attempting to launch external editor"...
The ZBrush2 folder must not be too far from the Application folder.
My Zbrush was there :
Application->MyApplications->3D->ZBrush2->ZBrush2.app
I just changed the location, I put the ZBrush2 folder in "MyApplications" and it works :
Application->MyApplications->ZBrush2->ZBrush2.app

Awesome stuff, So I see how this is good for textureing but can this be used for sculpting as well??
The only thing I can see to do is export the document to Photoshop, on a new layer make your alpha and then bring that PSD back into Zbrush as an Alpha and make a stencil with it, and this of coarse is based on you not moving your mesh at all during the process to ensure that your stencil lines up with the model still, this is all possible WITHOUT Zapplink, so is there some feature in Z Applink that Im missing that allows you to alter the geometry ??
Sebcesoir
10-13-05, 03:39 PM
What is the process to do details in photoshop that will affect the geometry?
pete330
10-13-05, 03:53 PM
>>ZApp Link is a free plug-in that extends and enhances ZBrush’s texturing and illustration capabilities by automating the connection with programs such as Photoshop, Painter, or Illustrator.
i could be wrong but i don't remember hearing anything about altering geo with zapp link. pretty sure it's a texture workflow improvement.
Ktaylor and Sebcesoir: Projection painting of geometry in ZBrush is a pixol-based effect. The pixols have depth, and that depth is projected to the mesh's geometry. Photoshops is a pixel-based app and wouldn't know a pixol from a peanut. ;) It's impossible for Photoshop to paint depth, so there's no way that depth could be brought from Photoshop and projected onto your model.
The idea of creating an alpha which then gets used as a Stencil would work, though.
Antimorph
10-13-05, 04:19 PM
That's comforting to know, Aurick :). Section 3.1 of the pdf could be read and reasonably misinterpreted as meaning that depth information was directly manipulable in an external editor. Thanks for the clarification.

F...ck me, this is working so great ! THX for such a great release pixologic team.
I have one question though, I never used colors in PM before, I realized I get jagged textures on a 500 000 sphere after droping it. Is there something else to take care of when doing color works in PM ?? Do I have to set ds smooth or thing like that ?
THX again, this is so cool !!!!
frogspasm
10-13-05, 05:45 PM
Sleepwalker,
Yep. Set your tool display smoothing to something like.01, and press the fade button in Projection Master. Should take care of the jaggies for the most part.

Hey there, thx for the quick reply, in fact I set my ds smooth to 1, not .01 and didn't change anything (i d di that before entering pm of course) while exported the texture is just nice without jaggies, but it is a bit bad in the viewport, (i guess it's normal) I'll try .01 tomorrow morning .
THX mate, again, great application.

I use painter over photoshop and I have a couple questions. For some reason painter has certain programming preventing it from reading PSD's by default. It would be great if ZappLink had the targetting abilities specific to Zbrush rather then using an association component.

Dude ZBrush only has a 32bit installer thing, basically meaning you can't install ZB onto XP64...
I hope ZB 2.5 addresses this, we'll have to wait & see...

I work with 10.4.2 and it works fine. Did you select a .psd-file, go to info and changed the program to open it? Select the option it has to do the same with all the other files. You can also remove the preview program temporal and see what happens.

I've been playing changing file associations, from, preview, to CS, cs2, painter. I still get the "Error encountered while attempting to launch external editor"
Zbrush is exporrting the psd cuz i keep going into the Zapplink folder and playing the .psd files there and when i launch CS, or painter i see what i saw on my ZB canvas, its just theres no active link between zbrush and the app. ZB is not launching PS etc. If i save the file after manually opening the Zapp export .psd zbrush dosent recognize anything has happened. (duh)
I tried changing the permissions to the files, no dice.
I have not tried deleting preview.app or moving my entire ZB folder to my boot directory etc. for example. Which i think maybe the issue, a file path problem. I'm guessing PS dosent know where to look to find the PSD zbrush has exported. or its not looking at the right place. Or possibly ZB can't find photoshop etc.
Any ideas?
spaz8,
I had the same problem, try moving your ZBrush2 folder to the Applications folder.
I explained it here : http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=29628&page=6&pp=15
For me, it was a problem with the location of ZBrush and not Photoshop...

 Well, if that's the case, then it looks like I'm S.O.L. Being that I keep all of my apps on a different hard drive. And being that Zbrush's registration is tided to the hard drive it resides on, looks like I'll be exporting to PhotoShop the old fashion way. Oh well...

well i did move my zbrush folder into the same applications folder which CS2 is installed, BUT.. i do not have a "my applications" folder - unless your mean in the user folder with my movies, photo etc on my boot drive.
I have Zbrush and the majority of my apps on a totally different partition. Not on the Macintosh HD boot drive, which i think is what your suggesting.
Us mac guys are less predicatible i guess :), not everything is in the C:\\programs\pixologic folder like on WIN. (which works beautifully i might add) Deep paint killer indeed.
PS. riiiight forgot ZB is tied to the HD anyways even if i wanted to move the whole folder to a dif drive.
Anyways im sure PIXO will resolve this shortly, perhaps an update with a browser to point once to where ZB and PS are located on your system. If file paths are the issue to be resolved.

You right on all counts, spaz8. An update with a browser to set the file paths would be the best, most logical solution. Numerous members, if not most here have multiple painting/image editing programs. It would be good to give people a way to switch between apps without messing with the system. (On both Macs and PCs)

...All that being said, I do have a possible solution for Pixologic. Provide an option (weather it's a button or a preference window) to choose which image editor to open and it's location. This could be done for both on Mac and PC, and could be good for those of us that keep their apps on a different disk (like myself) or for folks use multiple image editors.I agree 100% here as I also have many different editors (I love Fireworks for a lot of stuff but then Photoshop for others etc)
It'd be a simple change for Pixologic to add a field where we could specify which executable to run...
Even better would be perhaps a configurable list where you could select at launch time which app you'd like to use.
Hopefully Pixologic will consider this option and add it in for us - I can't see any reasons not to. :tu:
-Will
The file path system is the best solution. Zbrush is looking for the file path.
If the script was partailly open source. You could go into the script and set the file path yourself. I do not think it is major coding problem so Pixologic
will probably release a update where you can point the browser to a specific app. The only thing I am sure they thought about this prior to release so there may be another reason it was not implemented. Email them with your sugesstions
In earlier post some mac users are having problems. It may be running for you but some others it is not. Read earlier post. I have both MAC and PC
and it running fine on my PC. The suggestion is to be able to pick app via the Zapp browser. That is not a bad Idea.
Absolutley fabulous guys, this is really a home run!
Thanks a lot pixologic!

My issue is a minor annoyance. Sending to Photoshop using ZAppLink, opens PS, but doesn't load the image automagically. I tracked down where it was saving the image to, so I can drag it in manually, and then everything else works as expected.
PSD's are set to open with PS only, although when I first tried it, PSD's were associated with ACDSee, and ZAppLink opened the image into ACDSee with no problems.
same here.

I have not changed any paths from the standard OsX setup, so all my apps are in the original install folders except I think I did have to manually create a 'ZBrush2' folder because I did not want the extras randomly chucked all over the main Apps folder. I would be extremely surprised if this wasn't the first place ZB looked on OsX systems. I am still getting the error with no solution in sight. I'm wondering what mac setups were used for the beta tests, surely one of them must have been a standard latest OsX on a dual G5? :) I know it'll be resolved eventually though...

Mac user here. I never keep any graphics apps in the Apple supplied "Applications" folder. I always keep my apps on a second partition. Other apps have the problem of paths as well. So I create an Alias (applespeak for shortcut) to the app, in the Applications folder and all is well.
Maybe this will work?

Since some Mac users are experiencing difficulties with the .psd file-type association, I will update and upload a new version of the ZPlugin which will allow Mac users to select the external image-editing application without using the OS file-type association.

Hi Pix,
Having the option to choose the app instead of having to use a file association might be a nice option in the PC version, too? Especially since many PC users already use slide-viewer software like ACDSee, which normally will have the .psd option assigned to it.
Just a thought, since Zapp is already working great on the PC.

I've been waiting for this for 5 years, so I can use painter's amazing brushes.
For Mac OSX users: I'm using 10.4.2 the ZB app is in the normal app folder. I selected a psd file and changed "open with" then, don't forget to press the "open all documents like this" button.
Works fine, However I'm having one problem that is not covered in the Manual.
I drop an object export to Painter, paint it, bring it in, pick it up, everything is fine. Then I turn it over to do the back, drop it and press zlink again, but instead of opening the texture so I see the back, it opens it so I see what I have already painted.
What am I doing wrong?

Ofer, Still no luck getting Zbrush to Launch painter,ZAPPLINK will launch Photoshop no matter what. Even if the PSD is associated with Painter. I can even run the experiement outside of Zbrush and fire up a PSD it opens in painter.
I've uninstalled Photoshop and it doesn't want to see painter at all. My suggestion is a simple option to tell Zapplink what program to run. Perhaps I want to run photoshop and or painter?
I have waited for a tool like this for along time. It works beautifully. Photoshop: 7, CS, and CS2 no problems. Tested it on Painter 7-9 no problems, you just need to set the correct option in painter, ie. not save with an alpha channel or in CMYK format. You also have to browse down to the Zapp-link folder to save the .PSD file. Saving it anywhere else doesn't seem to update the Zbrush version.
This truly is a powerful tool, I may never have to manually UV map again!
Thanks so much for all the hard work!

Mac OSX guys, who are having a problem.
Try this,
Create a new user with admin privilleges. A nice virgin account. You should have one set up anyway for troubleshooting.
Make sure ZB is in the normal app folder, (I don't know if this matters or not). Then don't forget to remove the ZappLinkData and ZappLink.zsc files from the ZappLink folder, which you can chuck away after you remove the pdf, and make sure they are in the Zplug folder.
Then select a .psd file (you might have to make one first) and get info then use the "open with" option and then "change all"
Then see how it works in the new account. If it works OK then you know the problem is within your home folder. Maybe a corrupted pref file or even a corrupted cache file.
If it doesn't work then you know the problem is deeper. Maybe it's a problem that OnyX (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/11582) can fix, you can try it for free.

For users trying to get Zapplink to application bind to Photoshop on OSX 10.4.2:
1. Go to any .psd file and do a File/Get Info(command I)
2. Twirl down the "Open with" submenu
3. Where it says Adobe Photoshop under the application list(it may list another application), click the drop down menu and choose other(yes - even if it already says Adobe Photoshop)
4. Navigate to the Photoshop application on your system, click open or select
5. Back in the File/ Get Info menu, under "Open with" click the "Change All..." button(you were unable to push this button before step 4 as it was grayed out)
that's it... goto zbrush and invoke zapplink from within projection master, photoshop will now open up, instead of picture viewer or whatever

I think I figured this out. First, go to Start\Settings\Control Panel\Folder Options and press the File Types tab. Scroll down to the psd type and see if it is associated with Photoshop. Mine defaulted to ACDSee no matter how much I tried to re-associate the file type. The way I corrected the problem was to delete the registered file type and create a new association with Photoshop. Now Photoshop actually displays the file when it launches.

If your PC is not letting you change your file associations or you are having some problem along these lines the following from Kurt William may prove useful:
Start by going to: Start\Settings\Control Panel\Folder Options and open the File Types tab. Scroll down to the psd file type and see if it is associated with Photoshop. If it will not let you change associations to Photoshop or if another program has hijacked those files, delete the registered file type, then create a new one and re-associate the psds with Photoshop.

Hi,
Can I be clear on this before downloading the update because it works fine at the moment and I don't want to break it for no reason.
If I have Photoshop set as my system psd editor and I use the new ZappLink update to select Painter as the psd editor to use, does that mean that when I leave Zbrush that Photoshop will still be my system psd editor?
my zbrush "unexpectedly quits" when its linking.. :(
Tried having Photoshop (the app i sleected) already open, still crashes ZB
Tried changig file associations of the PSD's in the Zapplink Data fold, still crashes ZB.
*might be nice to have the functionality in to change the program Zapplink launches more than just the maiden time u run the script.. ie u move something, or u want the functionality for somthing specific in another graphics editor. -Ken

Hi.
This plugin works great when coloring. Does it work with deformations? How?

10-18-05, 09:51 AM
Haider--
you can A paint where you would like deformations and use those as a guide for doing it in pm with zadd on or off or in edit mode. I had tried it this way....
I sized my document to be 2048x2048 which is the same size I am texturing the model at (I don't know if that is necessary but I didn't want to take a chance at the time), then went into PM (with blank texture loaded of course) and used zapplink to go to Ps and painted black on white where I wanted to add some deformations. pick up from pm and go to texture menu and make that an alpha then go to masking, hit inverse, then alp....now I have a mask where I want to deform and I can either paint em on or use the deformation palette goodies.
:::::: A thread for Troubleshooting any problems that you might be having with ZAppLink is in the Questions & Troubleshooting forum. Please do not post such messages here. Will ZappLink work to paint displacement? Such as using the PM, going to Zapplink into PS, maybe use the Dodge and burn tool to paint diplacement?
Thanks for any info!

It will paint a bitmap. What you use this bitmap for (texture, alpha, bump, displacement, etc) is up to you, but count on an extra step or two after returning to ZBrush.

I'm a new user of ZBrush 2, let alone ZBrush 1.55. I followed the instructions on the first page of this thread and made a folder called ZPlugs inside the ZScripts folder inside the ZBrush 2 folder. The ZApp Link button does not show up in the Documents palette. The only way I can get it to work is when I go to the ZScripts palette and load the ZApp Link script. Then the button shows up in the Documents palette. But when I finish a session and restart ZBrush, I have to go to the ZScripts menu and reload the ZApp Link script all over again. Further, it does not remember where Photoshop is located.
I've downloaded the plugin twice now, thinking that maybe the first download got corrupted somehow. But the second download behaves just like the first time.
Any helpful ideas, anyone?

drop contents from the zapplink folder you unzipped to this:

I tried as you suggested.
I have a folder called ZScripts so I made the ZPlugs folder inside it and then moved the ZApp Link folder inside that one. Nothing. Then I renamed both using lowercase (Zscripts and Zplugs). Nothing.
Then I moved the contents of the ZApp Link folder (the zsc file and data folder) out of the ZApp Link folder and up one level to the ZPlugs folder. Success.
Must be how the script was written, because the Multi-displacement script works just fine inside its own folder. Weird.

I come from a Poser background. Poser 'runtime' hierarchies get very very complex, so unzipping files usually involves having the 'Use Folders' option turned on in WinZip, so that files are placed in the folders specified. This makes life much easier, as you only need to point WinZip at the root directory and everything unzips into the correct place. Some ZB plug-ins aren't zipped up properly to use this facility. I wish they were, but the files are not normally very large and the ZB hierarchy isn't complex, so it's no big deal. It has thrown me a couple of times, though.
After Christmas I'll write a quick tut and put it in the Tutorial forum on the subject of zipping multi-part files, for easier distribution and unpacking.

generally speaking zaplink is rocking my world. i just love watching my textures 'pop' onto zbrush from photoshop...
super-sweet workflow.
now a question. is it possible to work at a higher resolution than screen resolution? i'm currently texturing at 4k. i run zbrush at 1500x1100 screen size. right now i'm zooming in pretty close to the area i want to work on and zaplinking. this way what i get in photoshop is still pretty high res because i'm only working on say a quarter of the object at a time.
but this is my workaround, sort of forcing the zaplink workflow to 1:1.
is there a better way? did any of that make sense?
cheers,
Just to clarify, the image you're pulling into Photoshop is less than 1500x1100? Hmm. You're probably stuck with that -- I think Projection Master is 1:1 by nature, though maybe v2.5 reworks this with Zapplink in mind. Maybe.
That said, try playing with the AA:half button -- it might double your effective resolution. Also, hiding all your palletes will give you a little more real estate onscreen. You can save custom UIs to automate the toggling back and forth if that ends up helping.
Please report back if these suggestions are useful or not -- I suspect I'm about to run into the same issue myself!

01-09-06, 04:56 PM
nah... that's pretty much what i thought. (but the ideas are very much appreciated, thanks.)
i'm actualy using 1500x1100 canvas size so what i get in photoshop is pretty big. the whole workflow is really quite nice and i don't really feel limited i was just sort of wondering.
i guess the only way pixologic could change it would be to let you 'stamp' greater pixel dimensions than your canvas. i have no idea how difficult/possible that would be.
as near as i can tell the only limitation is that you can't make large-scale high-res texture changes. fortunatly i began texturing in photoshop using high-res photos as a start so i haven't lost any detail, i'm only using zbrush for fixing seams, touchups, etc.
cheers,
Well, that changes things. Try upping the canvas size to 4K and see if that doesn't give you the detail you're looking for in Photoshop!
meatpuppet
01-13-06, 10:25 AM
ah... (lightbulb)
for some reason i was operating under the erroneous assumption that zbrushes canvas couldn't be any larger than your screen size. (i don't really know why i thought that, it's pretty silly really.)
so now i can texture at whatever resolution i need. thanks for the nudge in the right direction.
(still so much to learn... brain getting full...)
cheers,
Working at 4K does slow ZBrush down a bit. You'll want those high resolutions for Zapplink, and for compositing your final image, but the resolution you were working at is probably more appropriate for the earlier phases of your work.
(Just remember to clear the canvas and re-draw models onto the screen when you change resolution -- that can take some getting used to)

I have instlled Zapp plugin into my Z 2.0 Plugin directrory several timesI then drew somthing on the screen as a test and proceeded to the Document pull down to test the ZApp. The Zapp link interface, nor the buttons are there. What's wrong
As far as I can tell all the files are in the right places and I have downloaded the app twice from two different sources. This is not an uncommon symptom as some other plugins, but not all, that I have installed don't seem to function also.
Are some of the various plugins that are around only compliant with 1.55 and not 2.0, as is the case with many plugins for 3dStudio Max and its version sensitivity Is it necessary to have Photoshop installed first? Will the plugin work with Paint Shop Pro also Must those programs be loaded on C: drive for the program to find them, or can they be on another drive
I may be repeating things you already know so please bear with me.
If you want a ZPlugin to be available at startup it should be placed in the /ZStartup/ZPlugs folder. If you do not have a ZPlugs folder you need to create one. That means you might be installing into d:/ZBrush2/ZStartup/ZPlugs , for example.
Next you should ensure that the .zip file containing the zplugin is extracted with the folders intact. So if the .zip file contains folders they must also appear when extracted. How you do this depends on which program you use to extract .zip files.
If Zplugins still do not appear in ZBrush you might want to check your keyboard for a sticky SHIFT key. If you hold SHIFT while starting ZBrush it will only load the default ZPlugins, not anything in /ZPlugins/ZPlugs. This can be used to troubleshoot errors reported by users.
If you are still not able to start ZBrush with ZStartup Zplugins loaded you can try and load them manually. Press CTRL + SHIFT + L and select ZAppLink.zsc . At this point you can also see if the file is corrupt. The Load Zscript dialog will show an image or a ZBrush logo when you select a zscript or zplugin. If it does not there is something wrong with your download.
Most Zscripts written in 1.55 work in 2.0 but 1.55 did not have ZPlugins. So no need to worry about. Photoshop is not necessary to start ZAppLink.

Hi....maybe this has something to do with popupblockers or something like that? I've checked, they work for me.

Have you written support@pixologic.com?
They can look into it, send you a link, update this post, etc.
The rest of us can't.
I recommend sending as much info as you possibly can. What browser you're using, what operating system, any browser extensions you might have installed, popup blockers, etc. Anything which might be helpful, so you can get your answer fast instead of waiting for them to ask you these things.

I am on a mac and am one of many who have had problems getting ZappLink to function. I suggest you look in the troubleshooting forum for the Zapplink thread which has all the problems and attempts at solution that have been tried. Thant's what I did. I systematically began at the beginning post and tried every solution offered. Finally I managed to get it working by discovering a new solution, placing the zbrush app folder directly into my user folder, not later in the heirarchy in the applications folder. That coupled with perhaps some of the other solutions made it work for me. I documented all the changes I made in my post in that forum.

old zapplink doesnt crash my Z3. But when I come back from photoshop, the model is gone till i click Pick Up Now in projection master. When it reappears however, the model has a black burn mark where the change is supposed to be. When i first loaded this i thought i was on to something.
I cant wait till they release all the gems for Z3....
Good job so far Pixologic. You guys are moving in the right direction. :tu: :D

... just use the current one, works for me so it must be working everywhere;).
If anyone got this to work, would you please share the installation information with the rest of us? To our knowledge, there was no way to get this to operate correctly after install.

As I said in the above post, everything that has been tried can be found in the troubleshooting forum/ questions and trouble shooting for ZappLink thread.
I started on page one and systematically tried every suggestion offered. I finally got it to function on my mac, os 10.3.9, ZBrush 2.
I found that placing the ZBrush folder directly into my hd/users folder was what finally worked.
It takes infinite patience but, as Michaelaangelo said "Genius is eternal patience."

RobertWe have no problem with zapplink and ZB2, its ZB3 and the post there after in relation to Zapplink that we were discussing. If you review my previous posts, a member made the comment that this copy of Zapplink worked on ZB3. I and others would like to know how he got it to function properly.

Id also like to see of I could get the older zapp link to work with zb3 as Im having the same dissappearing/reappearing with black streak problem.
The one workaround I tried was to send the model into zbrush 2 just for the sake of texturing. However zbrush 2 cannot read models created in zb2...
soooooo, I finally exported the model into .obj, THEN I was able to import it into zb2 and use the old zapplink properly.
However, even though it works fine that way it is:
1)a long way of doing it
and
2)zb2 cannot handle models with much more than a million polygons on my machine, and making a uv map for a higher poly model can take some time(10 minutes to do a 4 million model on my machine). So if you use this method I would suggest using a lower subdivision level.

I haven't tried it...but before zapplink came out you could have zbrush2 loaded with your model and it's texture loaded and also have photoshop loaded with the same texture loaded.....work on the texture in photoshop....save and click back to zb and see the results right away that way. I know it's not quite the same but maybe if it works in z3...it'll help somewhat til the new zapplink comes out.

I choose unshadedlayer+coloradjustments. After saving the photoshop document and returning to Zbrush, my polygons disappear from projection master. If you accept changes, the texture of any polygons that enter project master disappear, and end up being just the base color.
The best I could do so far is undo the the error by pressing CTRL+Z a few times to make my polygons reappear with the texture I had prior to entering photoshop.
EDIT:
Well, now that I see others are also having problems with this within Z3, there is no point in replying to this post. Whoever made this app should get gritty with making an update for us. :tu:

ZAppLink for ZBrush 3.1 has been released, so make sure you are using it. If you have problems, post in the ZAppLink thread at the top of the Troubleshooting forum.

Heaven sent.
For someone who isn't good at unwrapping UVs and tries to dissect what polygons are what when painting them, ZApplink is an awesome program. I can keep bouncing back and forth from Photoshop to ZBrush to check on how well my 2D paint job is lining up with the model. I had a bit of a learning curve tonight (it's my first time really getting into it), but after I got over it I found myself digging right into texturing without having to go through the unwrapping process.
Very nice. My texturing workflow should improve tremendously because of this. Hats off to the developers, and thank you for making it free! Programs like these are very hard to come by for free. :) :tu:

When will V3 see the light also for Mac users ?!?
As I understand it, "Zapp Link 3" is Zapp Link for ZBrush 3 (on either platform), and "Zapp Link r2 for Mac" is "Zapp Link 3, with further revisions and bugfixes applied for the Mac version."
The nomenclature is confusing, but I'm pretty sure Macs are not only up to date on this plugin, but ahead of the PC version.

No, this is wrong. ZAppLink is not yet available for MacOSX. It is in development and will be released as soon as available.

So- I keep checking the support page at pixologic, and I keep seeing a "coming soon" for Zapp for the Mac. Will this be available with a later version of Zbrush instead?
I doubt any development is going on here. Zmapper has been hinted at being phased out since the first OSX 3.12 build showed up without it. Zmapper is replaced in 3.5 with other workflows so I would assume with spotlight and lightbox coming in zbrush4, Zapplink will run a similar course.
