ZBC-Large.jpg (http://javascript%3cb%3e%3c/b%3E:zb_insimg%28%2719693%27,%27ZBC-Large.jpg%27,1,0%29)

I am pleased to release the Zketchpad plugin - an exciting update of the original Zketcher (http://showthread.php/?t=4736) by Glen Southern. (This has been a personal project of mine; there's been so much ongoing enthusiasm about the original script and using ZBrush for sketching that I wanted to see that fun continued with a version that was written for Z2. :))

Zketchpad has been designed to bring the script up to date for ZBrush 2, while also introducing some powerful new features that weren't possible before. Most noticeable is the introduction of Environments. This powerful -but little known - aspect of ZBrush lets users set up unique interface customizations for specific purposes. The Zketchpad Environment, for example, gives easy access to all features that will commonly be used while sketching in ZBrush. Features having to do with modeling or even painting are removed from view (although still accessible via the palettes). This helps you to focus much more easily on what you launched Zketchpad to do: sketching! The built-in tutorial (accessed by pressing the "About Zketchpad" button) explains how you can modify the Zketchpad Environment for your own preferences.

:b3::b3::b3: Click here (http://www.pixologic.com/zbrush/downloadcenter/) to download visit the download center:b3::b3::b3:

To install:
:::: After downloading (http://206.145.80.237/zbrush/zbcfiles/Zketchpad.zip) the zip file, extract it to any location on your computer.
:::: Place the Zketchpad.zsc file and the ZketchpadData folder into your ZStartup\Zplugs folder (if this is the first plugin that you've installed, you will need to create the Zplugs folder).
:::: Launch ZBrush. Zketchpad will automatically appear as a menu within the ZPlugin palette.

To run:
:::: We recommend that you first run the Zketchpad tutorial by clicking the "About Zketchpad" button found at the bottom of the Zketchpad menu.
:::: To load the Zketchpad Environment, click the Zketchpad button. If you plan to do a lot of sketching, you may wish to place this button onto the Shelf and save the location as part of your custom interface.
:::: When you've finished sketching, click either the Standard or Custom button in the ZBrush 2 title bar to return to the normal ZBrush environment.

Finally, we'd like to invite all ZBrush users to share their sketches in this thread. Have fun with it! :)

Ooo it works beautifully. This is just a question, not an ungrateful crit .. but is there any way I can make the plugin retain the brush size, intensity and alpha for any given pencil? When I mess up and need to use the eraser (happens a lot, I'm ashamed to say), I have to reset the settings if I want to carry on from where I left off. Maybe a 'reset to default' button? Having said that, it's making me take more care which isn't necessarily a bad thing. :D

As you are no doubt aware Alias ( Maya) sells something similar.

Unbelievable! This is the best plugin to date. I always draw on paper. I use Photoshop, Painter, and I bought sketchbook Pro just to see if I could get away from paper, but I have never escaped the need for it. In about 10 seconds after installing, and looking at my options, and giving it a quick spin I am totally excited. THis is the Mutha of all drawing apps. Ahhh.. Scripts. :)

I need to go play. Thanks Aurick for keeping Glens plugin alive, and turning it into something new, and exciting again. :D

Technically you can't paint 2D in Zbrush. You have to have a surface or shape to paint on. I was shocked when I realized there were no true 2D functions, it's all 2.5D or paint on 3D objects. Very bizzarre ommission.

Belseth -

Actually, this is inaccurate though I understand your confusion. In the QuickStart guide: Production Basics I point to a workflow that would lead one to this assumption. :)

However, if you wish to paint in a purely 2D capacity you can simply go to the render palette and turn on Flat (it is under the Preview button). Then, for each tool you paint with, including 3D objects, make sure that only RGB is selected and that you are not painting with either ZAdd or ZSub on.

No need to add water, instant 2D painting! :)

Hope this helps clarify some things.

Hey, DJ. Long time no see!

If I understand you correctly, you've moved the Zketchpad icon to a custom location and saved your interface, and then you Ctrl+Click the icon at the location to run it? If so, then that's not quite right. Simply click the icon, just like you would the Projection Master one (which is also a plugin, where the location of the button has already been stored on the Shelf for you).

I wonder if there is a way to include a way to rotate the canvas as is possible in Painter?
This would make sketching even more like the real thing.

Using this plugin to start off a sketch it is really great and then to take it on further using other tools to develop a painting. Zbrush has so many possibilities with 2d painting, I haven't used a proper pencil since Aurick posted this plugin, I am just having so much fun learning. Hope I can soon finish one to post up here.

Rotating the canvas would be so cool.

I don't have zbrush but I want it. Just can't figure out If I should buy a wacom tablet first with my loot or zbrush then a tablet. I do alot of 2d work The one below was done with Sketch Book Pro 2.0 & Paintshop Pro 9. I though I would post here for comments and anyone who may help me in deciding what to buy first.

Also Circuit City has the wacom intous3 4x6 for 199.99. Not sure if I should go larger.

It depends how you are at drawing with a mouse. Also if you are strictly interested in the 2.5D functions or if you are also interested in the 3D functions. You really don't need a pad for 3D, I find they slow me down, but they are handy for drawing. Sketching with a mouse is a pain but I paint all the time with a mouse.

In truth larger pads can be clumsy. I wouldn't recommend anything bigger than say a 10"X12". The really large ones I find myself half laying across them to use. The small lack resolution but are handier to use. The only thing I think people use the really big ones for is digitizing drawings. Larger ones even 10X12s are getting hard to find and I got mine off Ebay. That size is a good one but I still find myself reaching due to desk design. I've been tempted to build a secondary shelf under the computer desk for the pad. It gets tiresome using it all day at desk level. If you ever get rich check out the ones with a built in screen. I'd kill for one but they run a couple of grand.

Gottsbett,

If you're really interested in drawing and painting digitally, I'd say save your money and buy a 6x8 Wacom (intuos or Graphire) tablet on ebay. It's a lot cheaper route to take than circuit city. (And you'll have more money left over for a copy of Zbrush.) Plus 6 x 8 inches is a good size to draw on, not too big, not too small. If you go any larger, I'd suspect you'll need a drafting table next. :P

But take your time, shop around, and check out the different tablets on displays at Circuit City, CompUSA, etc. Make sure find a size your comfortable with. Then look around ebay. A lot of times you'll find companies that'll sell refurbished or new tablets that they have a surplus of. That's how I bought my Intuos 2 tablet. :D

Good luck!

If you want to paint then you really need to get a Wacom first. Although many claim to work happily with a 6x8 the difference in price between that and an A4 is not much at all. The advantage of an A4 when drawing is that your hand and arm movements will closely correspond to a 1:1 ratio with the screen with is very important when drawing.

Remember that a tablet will outlast many computers you're in for the long haul with a tablet and you will never ever regret getting an A4. For the minimal price diff you'd be crazy to get smaller if you're drawing. IMHO

My 2 cents comments :

_That would be cool to have line and cercle option

_that would be super cool to have background paper choice (like fabrick paper or old paper)...

_the eraser base value could be 50% for smoother effects (you actually have to reajust it everytime you use).

But your script is already great, is just 2 cents comments ;)

Great use of z. As a lowly 2d animator, I was just thinking...wouldn't it be great if we had a slider to "flip" drawings, and some way to bake them out...this thing is more intuitive than a host of 2d anim apps...for pencil testing, etc.

P.S. most of the plugins ive downloaded have more or less lousy, less than specific installation directions {improper pathnames, folder names, leftover files with no place to put them that is apparent etc}

any help would be greatly appreciated, since im sure some of these plugins would greatly expedite the workflow and 'fun' factor of using this program.

Nevermore, it must be that you've unpacked files from the zip file you downloaded into the wrong locations on your computers filesystem. The fact that the images are missing suggests that they are not where the zscript is looking for them.

Extracting files from zip files to the correct locations is something that most people get the hang of quickly (or never have problems with in the first place). My experience is that the instructions are usually explicit and it would be of interest to hear from you where you think they are not.

More information is needed to diagnose your problem. If you would copy and paste in the installation instructions 'side by side' your interpretation of them, someone will be able to point out where you've gone wrong.

marcus_civis

P.S. most of the plugins ive downloaded have more or less lousy, less than specific installation directions {improper pathnames, folder names, leftover files with no place to put them that is apparent etc}

If you've red triangles in your display then the image files are in the wrong location. Somewhere along the way you have lost/incorrectly installed the folder called ZketchpadData which contains these files. The folder should be installed as a subfolder of your ZPlugs folder, the path for which (in a typical Windows installation of ZBrush) is C:\Program Files\Pixologic\ZBrush2\ZStartup\ZPlugs. Note that this ZPlugs folder must be created for new installations of ZBrush.

As for the trouble you are having with other plugins, please bear in mind that these plugins are:
1.Free
2.Written for love not money.
3.Despite the plugin writer's best efforts can sometimes contain errors.
4.The writers are generally approachable, helpful and want people to find their plugins useful/fun.

Happy pixolling,

That IS the problem i am having, my .ZIP file i downloaded from this very forum, doesnt include ANY file/folder named 'ZketchpadData' anywhere therein, which is why the installation directions do not make sense to me....

The Directions i used for install arent included in the .ZIP file, they were at the beginning of this thread, first post.

When i open the .zip file, it has numerous .psd files, ONE Zketchpad.ZSC, and ONE Zketchpad.CFG

I am unfamiliar with the file extensions and where they should go and what they should be, after browsing looking for similar file extensions, i tried my hand at installation, which is what lead me to originally post in this thread, and the resultant failure at making it work properly.;)

So I'm possibly misinterpreting something, am i to create a FOLDER named 'ZketchpadData', to install all the .psd files into? I know the .ZSC is in the right place or it wouldnt work at all, where does the .CFG file go?{this isnt stated in the directions, or if it is, its not clear to me}

@ marcus_civis

Your list, I know all too well, having worked on several game mod teams. Perhaps the term 'lousy' should have been swapped for 'incomplete', no harmful intent purposefully implied. While I may be new to Zbrush I am not 'new' , I apologize if the 'tone' of my post offended either you or the creator of the plugin. It is frustrating when you cannot get something to work properly even after having followed the documentation.

marcus_civis
04-04-06, 12:36 AM
Nevermore,

OK, no problem. Some unzipping utilities have an option to 'preserve original folders'. Yours is obviously destroying the folder on unzipping. (I just tested the file with Winzip and the folder is there as it should be.) Under the circumstances it is not surprising that you are having difficulty.

All you need to do is create a folder called ZketchpadData in your C:\Program Files\Pixologic\ZBrush2\ZStartup\ZPlugs folder. All the files in the zip file go in the ZketchpadData except the Zketchpad.ZSC which should be outside in the ZPlugs folder. Restart ZBrush and all should be well.

Cheers,

Moochie
04-04-06, 12:41 AM
Nevermore .. assuming you use WinZip .. if you open the zip file and scroll to the right, you'll see a column headed 'Path'. That shows the relative positions of the files (you'll notice the .zsc file has no path, but all the rest show zketchpadData\). That means the .zsc lives in the root folder and everything else lives in a sub-folder within the root, which will be called zketchpadData.

All you gotta do is select everything (ctrl+A) > click Extract > ensure the box 'Use Folder Names' is ticked in WinZip > use the navigation window to point to the root folder (the ZStartup/ZPlugs one) and click Extract. WinZip will set it all up for you.

Couple of things: if you can't see a column headed 'Path' in WinZip, just right click on the column headers and put a tick against the Path option to make it visible. Also, not all plug-in creators use the path option properly when making their zips. So always read the extraction info given by the creator (usually in the thread itself on the forum, or in a ReadMe in the zip).

If you've missed all the plug ins so far, you gotta lot of fun ahead!

If it's a zscript they usually all work with both platforms. So yes I think it does work on a Mac.

Is the script touch sensitive somehow? I tried it and I couldn't get my line weight to vary. I have an intuos 3 6x8 tablet as well.

When I go to this section all of the options are greyed out. How do i access them? I tried zbrush initialize but that didn't seem to work.

That means that either your tablet does not have pressure sensitivity, or you're running on the default Windows drivers (which don't support the sensitivity). Please go to the tablet manufacturer website and install the most current drivers from there.

I just had a chance to dabble with this Zscript and have to say that I really, really enjoy it and wanted to say THANKS ! :tu:

With the exception of the "scratching" of the pencil, it feels like a real sketchpad when I use my Wacom tablet ... but without wasting any paper ;) .

Cheers,
Andreas

That seemed to work! Hmmm its going to take a little while to get used to using a wacom again. It kind of strange not looking at what your hand is doing to draw.

I just made this image today with ZSketch. I am tempted to define it in Photoshop but, i want to challenge myself and do it in Zbrush., Anyone got any techniques that would be helpful. like what brushes to use or alphas. 2D painting in ZBrush is foreign to me. i checked the manual but its mostly 3D and not 2D painting.

are either dead or they transfer me to zbrushcentral.com/

I am using firefox, however, I tried internet explorer and links are still re-directing me to zbc.com

is there another link to download it

Sorry about the other thread.
Will there be an update for 3.1?

It doesn't seem to work correctly in 3.1, unless there's a way to fix it.

Thanks.

Hi. I am getting this error in zb 3.1 when I try to select a pencil. I don't expect that it's related to my system, but instead changes in 3.1. Any advice for work arounds?

My thoughts too. Unfortunately Pixologic has not released the source code. Just a .zsc file, which is a bunch of binary goo. :( So no help from the outside available it seems.

Sorry, I'm being stupid. Try this: unzip the zip to your ZBrush3\ZStartup\Alphas folder and restart. I think the pencil should be ok. You can rearrange the UI if you want and save the result to the Zketchpad.cfg in the ZPlugs\ZketchpadData folder.

Hey! Good thinking. That did the trick. There was some other person asking about this a couple of weeks ago. I'll see if I can track him down and point him here.

Thanks!

Reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally thanks !!!
Now we can use our beloved application also for drawing.
Could it be possible to have also some pen marker like those used in concept drawing, you know, those markers who are only gray and have different values of transparency ?
Thanks again,

Since Z3.1 doesn't quite like the original UI config supplied with Zketchpad, and not everyone may realize that you can create a custom layout (and I don't like the colors!) I made a new UI config based on Z3.1 default. See picture below.

I've attached a zip with the config. To use it as is, put this in the ZStartup\ZPlugs\ZketchpadData\ directory. Backup the original if you like. Now when you press the Zketchpad Plugin Load button, the below config is used.

It is easy to make your own.
:: Select a starting UI, or use the default.
:: Set Preferences : CustomUI : Enable Customize ON
:: CNTL-LMB-click items on the shelfs that you don't want to the middle of the screen and release. They disappear.
:: Temporarily open up the ZPlugin menu on the left or right tray.
:: CNTL-drag Zketchpad buttons to a shelf, & arrange as desired.
:: Close the ZPlugin menu, and close down the left or right tray if you don't want them open by default for this UI config.
:: If desired, choose or create a different UI color scheme as well.
:: Save this UI config over the original Zketchpad.cfg in the ZStartup\ZPlugs\ZketchpadData\ directory. Backup previous version if desired.

:b3: Now, when the Zketchpad Plugin Load button is pressed, your custom UI will be loaded instead of

I like to show the tool menu, Stroke, Alpha, & Texture selector, and anything else related to customizing the brushes on my UI. That way, when I customize the smudger, the customized brush can be selected from the Tool menu, instead of having to re-customize it after selecting the Zketchpad smudger, which sets everything back to its presets.

(I believe it's also possible to make a custom QuickMenu with the Zketchpad buttons in it so that the UI can be extremely minimalistic.)

Okay i have two questions, (please note that i haven't used this plugin in a long time),
1. would it be possible to set it up so it works well with sketching layers, like in this thread: http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=7354

2. if so, can this be made to work with more than 2 layers.

i have to admit that i've never really gotten a handle on layers as far as the opacity/transparency goes.
i just would like to use zb the way i do with ps with multiple layers each with their own color/line etc variations.

EDIT: I've also noticed that in the method in the thread above that the colors are somewhat faded, i'm guessing this is due to the material opacity/transparency, how does one if possible make the colors at their full saturation and maintain the layer transparency?

ZketchPad was a plugin for ZBrush 2 and has been replaced by PaintStop - available for MacOSX from the Download Center or with the ZBrush 3.5 R3 upgrade for Windows.
