another great character design site is pictoplasma (needs IE to work properly...)

The interface is kinda wierd, to get in you have to:

-click on the box to enter
-from the popup window click the pale yellow circle for 'archives'
-click 'by character'

you can now browse a bunch of characters sorted into types, looking at it now it starts with animals broken into bats, bear, beaver, bird, cat... then humans as baby, child, female.., then monsters etc...

literally hundreds of designs here covering quite a few styles, great way to inspire a zbrush sculpt or 2!
