David,
Here is how you get transparencies as far as I know... first, you must have the transparent object on a seperate layer than the rest of your scene... make sure you have the transparency slider where you want it on your material in the material pallette. Then click on the flatten layers tab in the render pallette(default is "on")... once inactive this will let your layers have transparencies. Hope this helps some...
Best regards,
Michael

In addition to needing to turn OFF Flatten Layers, I also think that you have to have your transparent object layer in front of your other layers (?) and I think you need to do a Best Render. (?)

There is also an alternative method that has some advantages over the standard method. It uses multiple layers and the Clone Brush to paint in the transparency effect, which allows for control over how the transparency fades in or out, among other things, and it allows you to have transparency and still have Flatten Layers ON.

It doesn't matter what order the layers are in. The only catch is that an object cannot be transparent to anything that's on the same layer.

For example, if you made a pair of eyeglasses with the lenses in them and rotated them, the temples would disappear as they passed behind the lenses. But if the lenses are on a separate layer from the frame, the frame would be visible through them -- regardless of whether the frame is on layer 1 and lenses on layer 2 or vice versa.

A note about Flatten Layers is that when it's turned off, only the currently active layer will render. The other layer will only update when you switch to it. So you should do a best render of the first layer, then switch to the second and let it render before outputting your image.

For the second method of transparency, check out this thread: click here (http://www.pixolator.com/zbc-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=000142)
