View Full Version : Help Needed...
Good Day everyone , My name's Kevin and i am new to Zbrush. I have been fascinated by all the works i have seen online using Zbrush as main tool. So, i did manage to get myself a copy of 'Zbrush' and i have started using it about 2wks ago. I must say that it is a very great and efficient package. Somehow i think i need some help here with my texturing. Oh by the way, before i forget, i'd like to thank people who's posted tutorials online. They have been of great help and i really appreciate it. Coz without it i don't think i'd understand it at all. I have tried to download a few tutes that i have followed and from that, i have been able to do some modelling/sculpting tests
It'd be very much appreciated to also receive some comments from anyone just to have an idea where i am situated and to what level i am at.
Well, the reason i am here is to ask for help... I am not always online due to the bad internet connection we have here in Mauritius, laid back country!! It sucks, i know!! lol But i do check my email and would also try to check the threads on here every now and then.
I need help on texturing so anyone who can help me or give me advise, i'd really appreciate it.
I have attached one of my first model in Zbrush and i really need some help here to finish it off... I am looking forward to hear from you guys! Please! help me...
Regards, Kevin

This Orc character is entirely modeled in Zbrush. It took me about a day and a bit to finish the mesh. It's about 1.4 Millions polys at the moment. I think i could have done it way under the 1 million.
Here's a WIP of the mesh... I started with a basic head that i gradually worked my way thru... Hope u like it.
Cheers,
Kevin

Can anyone tell me, what i should do next to move on texturing...?
Is there anything about the UVs i should check or is there a Disp. Map i should get before i start Texturing?
I'm kinda lost here...
Thanks,
Kev

Hi will try to help you with your questions, first I better say that I’m kind of new to Zbrush myself but maybe I can give you some tips until an expert answers your questions.
First off I think you should download the Practical Manual for Zbrush the project (warrior project) goes thru the steps in texturing a head.
Practical Manual for Zbrush: http://pixolator.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=3471 (http://showthread.php?t=3471)
To be able to start texturing you must layout your UV´s, if you only work in ZBrush then use one of its UV-layouts (GUV) or (AUV) tiles. This must be applied when your mesh is at the lowest resolution (Level). Then go texture -> set the size of you texture map ->New, and you have applied a new texture for your mesh. The Practical Manual will probably answer all your questions about texturing. Displacement maps are used to fake detail, in a way like a bump map this is a great tool if you don’t want a mesh that is very dense (High poly). If you only use Zbrush this is usually not a problem but if you’re going to render in another engine/program then I suggest you look into displacement maps.
btw your model looks very cool :tu:

Gling-glo,
I really appreciate your time spent to reply to my questions :tu:
I will download the Practical guide and then go thru the tutes.
Thanks again and oh, Thanks for the comment...
Cheers!

A note on displacement:
Displace is real geometry deformation. It's performed at render time and it does make your polycount very high, but only on rendertime.
If you can afford it and have the time to wait a few days, I would suggest you buy a gnomon dvd from www.thegnomonworkshop.com (http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com)
This one might suit to your needs:

There are lots of tricks you probably won't found on your own.
Good Luck,
Joost

:tu: nice model
I just wanted to say Thanks for all the comments and help that you guys posted...I really appreciate it! :tu: It's actually my very first post :).
I'll go thru the tutes and try to get something done. I will post the WIP here only if they are worth showing :D coz i afraid that i might have missed 1-2 steps before starting the sculpture. But hey, it's not gona be my last model so, there'll me more to come... ;)
Cheers Guys!!
Kevin
Just wanted to say that Critics and comments are more than welcome to be added. So, please don't hesitate... ;) :tu:
Cheers! :b2:

I'm pretty new to zbrush as well and still feeling like i missed some steps along the way.

The model looks good.:D
Hello Guys,
These are 2 head model tests that i have previously modeled
before the Orc ;) . And these were done after watching a few
modeling tutes i have downloaded online. I just can’t get
enough of Zbrush now...Cheers to all the Zbrushers :tu: !
And thanks to all... :tu:

Hello people,
It's been a while that i haven't played with this character since i was struggling with the texturing part. After understanding a little about the texturing process in Zbrush, here's an updated version
. Hope you like it guyZ...
See you all...

hi, I am enjoying the pics you are sharing! I think you are progressing very quickly.. (wish I could say the same). I particularly enjoyed the panther (?). Would love to see that one textured. Any chance of that? Good job all around!
Hi Wenna,
Thanks for the compliments ;)
I'm glad you like the panther and hopefully if i get a chance i will try to texture it :)
This progression you see is probably due to lots of days and nights of testings and experimentations ;) I have been looking at any single tutorials i could find online and especially here in Zbrush central. Just to understand the way it works and honestly, i still got a hell of a lot to learn and test ;)
Zbrush is just an awesome and powerful software that i wouldn't let behind now.
Like the "Pringles" Ad says, "Once you pop, you can't stop" well, i guess it's the same for Zbrush :D "Once you start, you can't stop"
Happy Zbrushing Wenna!

i have just recently started learning zbrush, and some thing si find helpful (if you are not already doing them) is to use the edge loop funciont on your lowest poly model to define actual loops for eyes and mouths and noses, it will make the shaping of your mesh much easier even at lower division levels, also you seem to be getting that lumpy putty look thats common in zbrush, i've found this is usualy from trying to define actual mass or large areas while it too high of a division level, any time you want to change the height of a brow or raise a cheek out, drop back down to the lowest posile level you can in order to get that shape defined,
also when at high levels your smooth brush hardly works at all on larger areas, so when smoothing out problem areas, i drop down sever div levels, and smoth the area, then step up one, smooth again, step up and smooth again, to get it all smooth
again good work, looking foreward to seeing more
Rhinokey,
I know exactly what you mean about the division levels ;)
This character is actually one of my very first characters i did in Zbrush.
I just didn't know about that problem at that time while i was modeling it and i have recently learnt more about that part while testing and reading tutes :)
I only wanted to mess with him again and try different things on texturing. Instead of leaving it behind ;)
I've only been using Zbrush for about 5-6wks now so, i guess there's still a lot more to learn ;)
Thanks a lot for pinpointing that mistake and for the comments :tu:
I really appreciate it :)
Cheers!
Kevin
Hello everyone,
After a year away from Zbrush due to work i have been motivated again after seeing all those wonderful works on the forum.
I started playing around with this mesh i got from nickz :tu: http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=27688&page=1&pp=30
and came up with this dude. Just thought i would add him with all my other doodles :)

I am still learning the power of Zbrush so, bear with me...
C&C welcome
